Building a house rather than buying one outrightly depends on you mostly. If you are ready to higher professionals I think building your own house from the scratch is better, but if you don't have any experience and you think you can coordinate everything on your own you may end up spending to buying one outrightly. Though I wrote an article favouring the later a while ago, you're probably going to get the house cheaper by building from scratch.

Note the curbs and gutters. Not like the gutters that we build in Nigeria. The roadway has a crown in the middle, that sends the water to the contrete curbs at the side, and these in-turn channel the water the the catchment which moves the water to large drainage pipes buried. These drainage pipes lead to a retention/detention pond. The detention pond acts as a flood zone which holds the water and slowly releases it off the Land.

The reason that I am mentioning this is because of our ignorance of flood controls in Nigeria. In the Atlanta Georgia area, when you develop a piece of property that was in a Natural state. The building code demands that the area of development must release the same amount of water off the area after development, as the same amount of water pre-development.

This is an important issue that should be taken seriously in Nigeria. When you build structures including roads and buildings, these structures cover areas that would have absorbed rainwater. When you prevent it from absorbing rainwater, then more water will flow off the area faster which will cause floods down the road. Now imagine how we hardly have open spaces in Lagos, and we still don't have areas to hold the water and slowly drain it off. It is only natural that we will always have floods.

Yes in a way, our gutter option holds some of the water. But are they deep and adequate enough? What about the breeding of mosquitoes? Our approach in my opinion is antiquated.
