Martin Jol has accused Damien Comolli of costing him his job as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

Jol told The Sun that he had identified the need for an experienced midfielder and left-winger in the summer - but Frenchman Comolli, Tottenham's director of football, ignored his request, and instead spent £30million on Darren Bent, Younes Kaboul, Kevin Boateng and Adel Taarabt.

Jol is quoted in this morning's edition of the newspaper as saying: “I felt the squad would be unbalanced with these signings and it proved to be the case.

From The Treatment Table To Tottenham

Full name: Jonathan Simon Woodgate
Date of birth: 22 January 1980 (age 28)
Place of birth: Middlesbrough, England
Height: 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in)
Playing position: Centre-back


Jonathan Woodgate was born on the 22nd January, 1980, in Middlesbrough, England, but didn't make his breakthrough locally. Although he was a member of the Middlesbrough academy system as a youngster, he moved to Leeds United as a promising sixteen-year-old centre-back. Indeed, it would not be long before he made his full debut for the Yorkshire club’s first team, with this coming in November 1998 at the age of 18.

His emergence in the first team coincided with a remarkable upturn in fortunes for the Whites. Under the guidance of David O’Leary, and alongside fellow products of the Leeds United academy, such as Ian Harte, Harry Kewell, Alan Smith, and Paul Robinson, combined with big money signings such as Mark Viduka and Rio Ferdinand, the club were able to go on a remarkable run.

As well as challenging the Premiership supremacy of Manchester United and Arsenal, the 2000-2001 season saw Leeds United reach the semi finals of the Champions League. This campaign saw Woodgate gain significant big match experience against such European heavyweights as Barcelona, AC Milan and Valencia.

However, while Woodgate’s Leeds United career was reaching new highs on the football pitch, off it troubles were brewing for the England international. A late night altercation at a night club in Leeds ended in a lengthy trial, and Woodgate being found guilty of affray. This led to him being banned from international selection, and destroyed any chance of him going to the World Cup in Japan in 2002.

Furthermore, this time period saw the beginnings of the injury problems that have so blighted Woodgate’s career. His final years at Leeds saw the player spend more and more time on the treatment table, whilst at the same time the club began to financially implode.

This financial crisis led to Woodgate joining Bobby Robson’s Newcastle United in January 2003 for £9 million. Here, Woodgate was quickly able to establish himself again as one of England’s finest centre half’s. However, the injury woes that characterised his final years at Leeds raised their head again. A serious thigh muscle tear cut short the 2003/04 season, and denied Woodgate the chance to represent England at Euro 2004.

Yet whilst he was lying on the Newcastle United treatment table in the summer of 2004, the then Real Madrid coach Jose Antonio Camacho surprised the whole of Europe by sanctioning a £13.4 million move to the Spanish club.

The extent of this thigh injury meant that he was only able to make his debut for Los Merengues in the following season during a remarkable match against Athletic Bilbao, in which he scored an own goal, managed to get sent off, and made sure that during his entire Real Madrid career Woodgate was only fit enough to take part in 12% of the club’s games.

Although his continued commitment led to him becoming a fans’ favourite, this lack of fitness led to Fabio Capello allowing Woodgate’s exit on loan to hometown club Middlesbrough in the summer of 2006.

After making an impressive debut for the club away to Arsenal, Woodgate was able to enjoy an unprecedented run of fitness in the team. This led to a re-call to the England squad, and a series of strong performances at the heart of the Middlesbrough defence. Sadly, injury was again to deny Woodgate a place in England’s World Cup squad in 2006.

This return to the treatment table did not prevent Middlesbrough from sanctioning the full transfer of Woodgate from Real Madrid for £7 million. However, a drop in form, the emergence of David Wheater, and the return to full fitness of German international Robert Huth, has led to Woodgate’s stay at the Riverside Stadium being cut short.

The decision of Gareth Southgate to make Woodgate available for a January transfer saw a transfer struggle involving ex-club Newcastle United, an un-named Premiership team, and Tottenham Hotspur being decided in the London club’s favour when Woodgate signed for a fee of around £7 million.

It is clear to see that Woodgate has the ability to excel at Tottenham. A fit Jonathan Woodgate remains one of England’s most able stoppers, with the chances of him repeating Michael Dawson’s latest defensive horror show against Manchester United being extremely small indeed. Furthermore, the prospect of Woodgate lining up alongside Spurs captain Ledley King will excite not just Tottenham coach Juande Ramos, but Fabio Capello.

Nonetheless, the ever-present prospect of long term injury will lead to some anxiety from the Tottenham fans who have grown begrudgingly used to Ledley King’s damaging injury absences. As such significant question marks remain over the long term impact that Woodgate can make at a resurgent Tottenham Hotspur.

Technical Skills

Jonathan Woodgate is an elegant centre back, capable of making the art of defending seem effortless. Furthermore, Woodgate’s physical stature means that he is more than capable of winning headers and making important tackles when the time is necessary.

Given both Woodgate’s excellent pedigree, and the troubles that Tottenham have had in their centre back positions, his signing should go a long way to correcting Spurs’ defensive problems. However, the prospect of him forming a formidable central partnership with Spurs captain Ledley King are low due to the pair’s history of long term absences due to injury.

National Team

Since making his England debut in 1999 versus Hungary, Woodgate has been only an occasional performer for his country, being capped a paltry six times. For someone of Woodgate’s ability, his lack of international appearances can be largely attributed to the chronic injury problems that have so far blighted his career. Indeed, over three years passed between his fifth cap, and his sixth cap, against Spain in February 2007.

Woodgate is also yet to appear for England at a major tournament. Whilst his absences at Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006 were due to injury, his non-selection for Euro 2000 and World Cup 2002 was due to both a lack of fitness and the repercussions of his high profile court case alongside Lee Bowyer. As such, Woodgate’s sparse international career must remain a source of significant frustration for the player.

Gilberto Fails Tottenham Medical
Brazilian left-back Gilberto will not be moving to
white hart lane after failing a medical.

The Brazilian is out of contract at Hertha Berlin in the summer, which is when he was expected to complete a Bosman move to White Hart Lane.

However, things sped up after Spurs were able to agree a cut-price deal with the Bundesliga club to sign him in January itself.

Gilberto jetted into London for a medical last week, but a deal was not struck for reasons left unspecified. It has now been confirmed that he then had a second medical, which he failed.

"The Brazilian national team player Gilberto will fulfil his contract until June 2008 with Hertha BSC," announced the Bundesliga side on their official website.

"The player is expected back in Berlin on Thursday."

Hitting out at the Premier League side, the statement continued: "Hertha and Tottenham Hotspur reached an agreement over the transfer of the player after the statutory medical last Sunday, when all conditions for a transfer were fulfilled.

"It is therefore all the more incomprehensible for Hertha the way Tottenham have now acted."

Spurs have yet to comment on this but, at 32, the player's age could have been a factor.

Gareth Bale has had his cast removed as he continues his recovery from a sprained ligament in his right foot.

The 18-year-old suffered the injury in our Premier League match against Birmingham City in December and although the Wales international is making good progress he is expected to be out for the remainder of the campaign.

"Gareth's injury was reviewed today and although the surgeon was happy with the results of the X-rays he does not anticipate Gareth being able to play any further part in this season," said Sporting Director Damien Comolli.

"We are all disappointed for Gareth, but he is still very young and his long-term fitness is our priority."
