Our Academy beat Barcelona on Sunday to reach the final of the Bellinzona Tournament in Switzerland. Steven Caulker (pictured) headed home the only goal of the semi-final after 20 minutes to set-up a final tie against Sporting Lisbon on Monday. Coach Alex Inglethorpe described the win as one if the best for our Academy in tournament football. "It's certainly right up there," he said on Sunday night. "Barcelona have one of the best Academy set-ups in the world and regularly produce players for their first team. "You have to take into account that we're one of the youngest squads out here and that we're without the likes of Andros Townsend and Jon Obika (on loan at Yeovil). We started against Barcelona with two Under-16 players in what is in effect an Under-20 tournament. It was a very big scalp for us. "We started brightly, dominated and that's what we wanted to do. "I thought we were good value for the lead. Kudos Oyenuga dragged a chance wide but we took the lead after 20 minutes when Steven Caulker powered home a header from Ryan Mason's corner. "We had chances after that and then defended magnificently - Oscar Jansson did not have a save to make. "In fact, we had another chance to make it 2-0 right at the end but Nathan Byrne was denied by the goalkeeper. "It was a fantastic achievement and a superb performance but we don't want to get to the final and lose it. We'll do everything we can to win it." Sporting Lisbon beat Paraguay side Guarany 3-0 in Sunday's second semi-final. Spurs: Jansson, Smith, Cox, Parrett, Caulker, Butcher, Byrne, Kasim, Oyenuga, Mason, Kane (Ekim, 50). |

Our Academy squad beat Sporting Lisbon to win the 'Tourneo Internazionale' in Bellinzona, Switzerland, on Monday night. Early goals from Ryan Mason (pictured) and Nathan Byrne paved the way for the 2-1 success as the lads followed up Saturday's semi-final win over Barcelona. The Portuguese side hit back after the break and we defended superbly to maintain the 2-1 lead with Oscar Jansson producing a key save with 15 minutes left. Academy Manager John McDermott reported: "It was an excellent performance and the lads showed fantastic mentality. "Ryan Mason opened the scoring with a free-kick curled in from a wide angle after five minutes and we went 2-0 up after eight minutes when Nathan Byrne produced a reaction finish from 15 yards after Calum Butcher's shot was blocked. "We controlled it up to about 20 minutes but then started to lose momentum. "They scored three minutes into the second half from a set-piece and we then had to defend our lines for the next 20 minutes. The lads did that manfully, got in blocks and the two centre-backs Calum and Steven Caulker headed everything away. Sam Cox was also very good in a holding midfield role. "Oscar Jansson had to make one Schmeichel-esque save with his feet with 15 minutes left. It was no fluke save, as he does it all the time in training and it was a match-winning save, as good as scoring a goal. "We finished the game well, we were in control having weathered the storm and the lads can be proud of themselves." Spurs: Jansson, Smith, Nicholson (Ekim, 55), Cox, Butcher, Caulker, Byrne, Parrett, Oyenuga, Mason, Kasim (Kane, 65).

i wished the game had ended at half time, that penalty should never had been a penalty and if united had been losing or if the match had been a draw then the referee would have added 5 mins of extra time instead of 3 |

Re: Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Inc by didoflex(m): 11:16am On Apr 27, 2009 |
![]() Oh What?? Apart frpm the penalty, what we did wrong, ![]() ![]() Well we should have tightened up, Corluka was a bit slow and I think Hutton should have replaced him since Tevez had been introduced to speed things up for United. Also I think we should have chosen a 4-5-1 formation as of the 2nd half, WHY? United are always dangerous after the first half and the first 10/15 minutes are so crucial in a second half. If we increased the number of personnel in the midfield to counter the forays of Tevez/Rooney/Ronaldo then maybe we would have gotten a result, Oh well it's OVER and we lost badly!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAN UNITED HAS NOW WON THE LEAGUE TITLE!!! ![]() |
