I have a little challenge! I am a teacher in a private school @Ajah-Lekki and I have this pupil (grade 2) that is timid, slow and forgetful. That is, he doesn't respond to questions on time even though he knows the answer, secondly he always forgets his books and other stuff @ school, he is slow in writing his notes and most times he ends up with an incomplete note because the board is rubbed off. Please what can I do to boost his confidence and make him more active and fast with his notes and also to correct his forgetfulness. Thanks in anticipation for timely response...

I'm impressed that we still have teachers who would go out of their duty call to help a pupil. I would suggest that you be particularly patient with this pupil as I see that you are very concerned and want results as this is what really makes us good teachers. Firstly, you need to let the child and the parents be aware of your observations and your willingness of partnering with the home to bring out the best in the child.

Modified: I've also checked the group... It's quite educative. Every parent and educator should join... www./SchoolFinders

I understand how you feel l and I must say you are a great teacher. I have handled some kids like that in the past though at secondary level. Firstly you have to introduce motivation for any normal good performance which ordinarily you wouldn't appreciate. Like whenever he packs his things home well...... .. Praise him in the presence of his mates " Class clap for Daniel, he copied all his notes and arranged it properly in his bag...... Weldone my boy". He will always love to impress you and gradually you will get the best outta him.
Challenge him to work......... Mofe if you copy this note I am about to write in time.... I'll give you erm erm erm something blah blah.
Talk to his parents..... They should involve him at home, they get him educative toys, charts and boards. A private teacher won't be a bad idea

Finally Love him, pamper him and dont get tired of trying. Pls pray for him too.

I wished I could help but not to worry I have prayed for the pupil....

Why not organise competition among the pupils in his class to boost his confidence or better still whenever he's free let his mate explain things to him cos he might understand them better.

How much do you know about his background? Is he having trouble at home? Try moving him to the front sit, always make sure you adjust your class to his pace. Make him feel special. His confidence may grow with time.

okay
I can help you but you have to take what i write serious

1- Pygmalion effect:
Make him understand what you expect of him as a student.
Gently tell him that you expect him to do this, this and that.

2- Positive re-enforcement
reward him with praise and gifts( if possibe) anytime he shows the desirable or wanted behaviour you seek for.

3- self talk
:
teach him to always talk to himself positively. Every morning, before you start class, call him out ask him to repeat this word
"my name is ____ and i will not forget to ____. _____ and ______ as instructed by my teacher".

4- Response opportunity:
ask him questions and guide him through the answer if he makes mistake. Do not accept a low standard answer, rather, correct and guide.

If you can do these things i listed, he will definitely improve but you have to believe in the process and in the student.

Some students are what we call "late bloomers".
They might seem slow initially but when they flap their wings and fly, the world will marvel. Einstein is an example of one of those.

Always ask the child question, boost his confidence level, if he starts having inferiority complex at this early stage, then its bad. Always make him active in your class, little by little, he will pick up.

Most persons even in nairaland were like that, those same persons type "G", "K", "Seen" etc on the thread.

it's a good thing that you are interested. my thoughts are that his problem may not exactly be that of confidence. well it could be and at the same time it could be something else.

Try to get close to him. When he sees you as a friend and not just his teacher, he will be freer with you which could make the learning process easier and also afford you the opportunity of knowing what exactly his problem is.

Very easy,
Create a temporary quiz , divide the class into 5 groups, make him head a group of very sharp guys.

They will infect him by force with the fire brand

I admire her willingness to help her pupil and she should be commended for that. However, You should be worried that these are the kind of teachers we have teaching your children. She may be a graduate but she is obviously not a trained teacher, if she is she wasn't trained properly. Child pyschology is part of teacher training and even more worrisome is that she resorts to seeking advice from Nairaland majority of whom are idiots when the web is full of professional discussion forums dedicated to teaching, where teachers from all over the world share their experiences and get advice from professionals and colleagues.

praise him when he does d expected things- find out his fancy in terms of reward, is it praise and parting, food, money, or being allowed special privileges. because each person francy different things. also reduce the level of reprimand when at fault

There are some characteristics that may suggest autism but there isn't enough info here to confirm or rule it out. You may wish to read up autism and see if the child fits in any of the spectrum or encourage the parents to go see a specialist to clear the air. For autistic children growing in this environment, it is always misconstrued for other things and I know some who were beaten just because their parents assumed their behavior to be something else.
