Nigeria has never held a referendum of any sort whereby the people truly had a say. So, stop using Azikiwe as an excuse. Azikiwe did not sort the opinion of anybody, neither did he speak for anyone but himself. The different ethnic groups in today Nigeria were colonised without anybody's permission. It was joined as Nigeria without the majority people's permission. It got independence without any referendum of the people, but as a result of few individuals' agitations.
The 1999 constitution was not put by the people. So, there is no legality in the true sense of it. The processes that brought about those senators and governors are flawed and do not represent the people. And besides, nothing is an absolute. Time changes, likewise laws. Slavery was once legal. Whatever legality Nigeria as a country had has eroded, and therefore the different indigenous people in the enclave can ask for separation since the union has failed them. It is there right. No one is a slave. Even marriages collapse. There is no good reason to force anyone to stay. Nigeria does not have any good argument to keep the Igbos. Nnamdi Azikiwe did not force anyone in his time, rather his argument to keep Nigeria one won the day. Let those who preach one Nigeria today bring their debates forward, and they should stop threatening the Igbos or anyone else. Everyone has equal right to stay or to leave.

1) A big population is not a problem if its harnessed for farming and manufacturing -

Farming-

When it comes to farming the north has a very large nomadic/pastorolist community who not only don't farm but often have direct conflicts with farmers along traditional grazing routes.

Additionally, farming in Nigeria is typically done on small landholdings and plots which are usually inefficient because you cant deploy machinery or fertilizer or pesticides the way you can on large farms

Also, farming is typically a low foreign exchange earner and usually does not make a region much money

Manufacturing-

Nigeria cant beat Chinese prices in manufacturing and has an overly protectionist economy which makes the import of raw materials too expensive. Why will local markets buy Nigerian products when Chinese products are half the price and better quality?

2) The polygamy of northerners

There's a limited number of women all over the planet. When 1 northern man takes 4 wives, that's 3 other men who don't get a wife. These men are then more prone to crime and violence and become easy targets for recruitment by extremist groups. This is why extremism is more prevalent in places with polygamy. Marrying more than 1 woman is even more problematic than having many kids because it creates a large group of disenfranchised young men who have no hope for marriage and are very likely to become recruits and actors of violence.

My point still stands. The north is not suffering because of population, but leadership. Even that over population is a lie, if we consider your point that a few number of men marry the women who are limited in number; therefore, leaving a larger number of men without partners. That then means that, even if these men with multiply wives give birth to 20 children with their multiple women, the figures will tally if these same women were distributed to the unmarried men and they gave birth to 3 to 5 children as their Southern partners who are largely monogamous birth. We will likely arrive at the same figures, when also we factor into the more infant death rate as compared to the south.
That aside. Population is not the problem. If food is all that is needed to keep us alive and healthy, then that food is very easy to source if we consider the technology available that can do that. It will only become a problem if they are equally dreaming to drum up money to build skyscrappers, and trying explore space, e.g to go to plannet mars. But even that, if the will is there, then it is possible.

The south is relatively okay not because we have lesser population, but because free oil and tech money flow here. That's Why things were relatively cheap over there before compared to the south.The north is ever capable to feed themselves, only the will is lacking.
