Thanks for this info. It's a solid one. But I'd also like to add that at times the part one is driving into might actually be a ditch without one knowing it.

Hi guys, trust you had a lovely weekend.

The raniny season is back with us, especially those of us who live in the western and southern part of the country rains have commenced.

Last thursday there was a heavy rain in my locality this led to flooding of the major roads in portharcourt, those conversant with ph will know that there are no drainages on their roads, hence whenever it rains theres massive flooding.

A lot of us like to drive through the flood water, av seen hundreds of pictures of drivers putting their cars in the floods, in lagos, ph calabar, aba, kaduna , kano name it.

yes in most cases we dont have a choice, but I dare say you do and must desist from it for the sake of your vehicles heres my reason why:

1. Engine damage
The air cleaner on your vehicle has a pipe that runs down to where your front wheels are, this pipe draws in air which passes thru the air filter to your engine. When you drive through a flood or even stay in a flood with your engine running, it draws in water into the aircleaner and your engine.

Hence your cleaner is soaked with water and is damaged, water enters your car engine and since water is not compressed, your pistons in
in the cause of compressing the water, cause serious damage to your engine block you could end up with a cracked engine block leading to
expensive engine repairs or replacement.

2. Brakes
Water affects your brakes, rendering them in operational, this can cause accidents for inexperienced drivers who dash at 100km/h after
driving thru floods thats instant death from collision as the brakes simply wont work. (remember the effects of expansion and contraction
metals in our basic physics)

3. Other vehicle components located below the fender line ,like kickstarters, horns, engine control modules, A/T module and sensors are
affected and malfunction when unnecessarily exposed to water , some vehicles like the hiace hummer bus have their maf sensors located at
the bottom of the engine when this is submerged in water the vehicle runs poorly or wont even start.

4. Body part rust
One of the quickes ways to promote rust in your vehicle is to drive in water, water with time attacks your coat, this is quicker if there
are cracks in your coat for rust to form. This explains the low price of used cars in flood prone places especially during rainy season.
Dont be fooled by the low price the socalled savings you think you re making will be frittered away in costly repairs and replacements
of damaged car components you mechanic will not immediately detect, even your beloved scanner wont detect physical damaged too.

In summary try as much as you can to avoid driving thru floods, drive around them or do what I do atimes park the vehicle and wait for the
waters to abate, have had to replace my kick starter 3 times in a row due to water damage cos of water damage, that was until I knew its
effects on vehicle.

Even if you drive a jeep you re not 100 percent safe from water damage, flood water rise above 2 feet .

Have a great week and drive safe. smiley

It's unavoidable in naija except u go park ur car in rainy season

It's few places in Port Harcourt that experience flooding. And most parts of the city has good drainage system

Nice one.
I have learnt something new today.

But nobody in his/her right senses will immerse a car in flood in the name of 'driving through'.

Not when you have no choice and you also see cars in front of you passing through it and those behind screaming on you to move on.

The best bet is to go slowly to minimize the water damage.
Re: For Those Of You Who Love To Drive Through Flood Water by Untainted007: 10:26am On Mar 21, 2016
So are you saying when we get to where there's flood we should carry our vehicles on our head? The manufacturers have always looked into that before they produce. How many times have I drove in a flooded area. If vehicle didnt enter flooded area, should I be the one entering it all because vehicle should not have fault, even if you don't enter flood, every parts in the vehicle have thier life span.

Ideally, car AC is meant to be off when you are in flooded areas so that the engine fan will not spash water into the alternator and some other vital parts. And most especially, one is expected to drive so slowly in a flooded area because the faster the car the easier flood will splash into the car major components.

Depends on the quatity of water as well as the kind of car you are talking about.

It's not until the ignition switches or electric windows stop working, how are you sure your seat controls or airbags are still intact and in good shape.

With some you get an instant reaction while some take months/years for the internal damages to surface.

Its pays to be wise.
1st thing to adapt when it rains is patience. I.e its safer to be patient for the flood to clear, rather than stress the car through the flood and go humble @ the mechanic workshop afterwards
2ndly some cars breakdown in the middle or just shortly after the flood and dey now have to put their feet in D water and using towels to damp water from the car,and calling roadside mechs to cause further problems.

I have learnt overtime not to have the mentality of "I must get this car home today"if I see a road that seem dicey,I don't mind looking for a secured place to park the car get my things out and move on.when I come for it the next day,I'm always glad @ the decision, cos some that forced theirs are still there the following day with mechanics troubleshooting their cars.

The flooded area was not much and i did not forsee any problem. I have learnt something new from this post. So you are to drive in slowly into the waters right?

Its actually a few places that have good drainage systems like D line, all the GRAs in ph, new airport road area, the rest are flood prone, remember most places in ph are sand filled , hence water is beneath all those fine houses you see.

ok na
so with all the money they have being spending in ph. they still don't have good drainage. na wa o

well I have learnt something new sha. I like driving thru water to help me clean my tires. well now I know better

The type of drainage they construct is a sealed type drainage, when it gets blocked its difficult to remove the slabs to evacuate debris, this causes flooding, then there are roads constructed without any drainage like the aba-oyigbo axis, eleme refinery road, nta road. and even new roads like the new airport road (luckily the road has a high profile) but settlements built by the roads are flooded.

Its very shallow water you entered, you havent had to wade in water thats 1 feet deep, water that creeps into your car , covers your legs reaches up to your gear lever handle.

Or been in a situation where the car infront of you stalls and breaks down and you cant maneuver you way out and your car is taking in water like a sunken ship.

Even jeeps and suvs arent spared.
