Very foolish post. The US and Europe still have social intervention programmes yet they have everything. And yes again it is a transfer of wealth to lazy and drug addicted people from hard working people. So what?

Indeed,
But you didn't think hard enough to figure out key details.

First, these countries have GDPs far in excess of what we have. These are developed economies who use money from taxation to provide the minimum living assistance to the poor and vulnerable.

Here, in terms survival, how does N5,000 enhance a person's survivability in Nigeria ?

Here also , the government announces to the world that they are broke, begins shopping for external loans, then viola!!, the next day announces the commencement of cash handouts, helicopter money, to the least productive in the society.

What sense does that make ?

And secondly, the welfare monies of these other countries find their way back into the government coffers through various consumption taxes that are already embedded in the system.

Here, in Nigeria, the government has no way of measuring the positive impact of such helicopter money in the system.

Lastly, for a country rated as the most corrupt in the world, by what criteria do determine eligibility for this intervention fund , with N500b at stake, considering that we can't even conduct an honest census , let alone a census of the poor amongst us ?

We have had many many social intervention funds in the past.
Ompadec, NDDC, PTF, NIMMASA, etc etc, come to mind.

Did these alleviate poverty in any measurable way, or were they simply conduits for fraud and corruption ?

A wealth transfer in the midst of an economic crisis ?

For a country that cannot even conduct a real credible census since the 1950s, now we want to create a registry for the poor ?

N500b down the drain.

Mark my words.

Zombies will com out and sing to d high heavens what a laudable development dis is. Time and time again d question has been asked of How are the poor and vulnerable going to be determined?? What are the criteria for determining who is poor and vulnerable and who is not?? Na jus laugh and sidon look we dey...

This policy would make more sense if it targeted disabled people.
I feel the Nigerian society isn't doing enough for the disabled.
Disability turns one to a beggar without choice.
The "poor people" can always make it one way or another.
