Workers of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company say they have become fearful in their office after some soldiers attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta, Ogun State, allegedly beat up one of them over “poor power” supply.

They told our correspondent that the soldiers, numbering about six and led by one Major Musa, stormed the IBEDC substation – Olumo business hub, Rounder – on March 6 and met one of them, Salau Adekunle, on duty.

They were said to have descended on Adekunle, the substation’s distribution officer, with horse whips.

Our correspondent learnt that presently on the average, the barracks and environs got five hours supply daily, which falls short of the soldiers’ expectation.

The victim, whose back bore effects of the flogging, said he ended up in a hospital because of the beating.

He said, “I was on duty on that day around 12pm when the soldiers came into our office with horse whips. They told me to get up and without explanation, they started beating me. I had to go to the hospital for treatment. I informed our head office and it promised to do something about it.

“They had come earlier then to threaten us. We reported at our head office and the head of the barracks was petitioned. They complained that they did not get supply regularly, but it is not our fault. They said they would be the ones to determine the number of hours they want power. We told them it was not possible, but they didn’t want to listen.”

Adekunle’s colleague, who does not want his name in print, said they had explained to the soldiers that the outage was caused by a reduction in the power generation nationwide, adding that the explanation fell on deaf ears.

He said the unit officials had received threats from the barracks authorities, making them to be afraid whenever they were on duty. He stated that the barracks had power for between eight to 15 hours everyday until recently when power generation dropped nationwide.

He said, “Electricity supply is divided into three levels – generation, transmission and distribution. This implies that generation affects transmission, which in turn affects distribution. The relationship between them is directly proportional. If there is less sufficient generated power, then there will be less power at our own side to distribute to the community, including the barracks. Before now, there was supply for at least eight hours and at times, 15 hours.

“Electricity generation has reduced from 4517MW to 2800MW and now to over 1500MW. All this is known and understood by the soldiers in the barracks, but they pretend as if they do not know; that is why they now get five hours’ supply per day. Initially, the soldiers blamed us. Soon, it graduated to threats. They once arrested us and took us to their barracks and detained us for hours; l was a victim.”

Another official said they had been living in fear since the incident happened, adding that threats from the soldiers had intensified.

“They (the soldiers) said it would not be threats again, but killing. Major Musa said he would send soldiers we don’t know. We spoke out because we cannot wait for them to kill us,” he said.

Attempts to speak to the spokesperson in the brigade proved abortive. However, a soldier attached to the brigade confirmed the attack to our correspondent on the telephone.

The soldier, who did not want to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the press, said, “I am aware of it (the attack), but I was not around when it happened. Power supply is not regular in the barracks. We used to have power for eight to 10 hours.”

Major Musa, however, denied leading soldiers to attack the electricity workers.

He said, “All the information is false. You can come to the barracks to get the correct information.”

This is my best story, I loved this but this people should not be the target, I remembered some people chanting change early last year, blaming the then govt of not improving the power sector (despite its explanation about vandals, etc) now that it is over a year that they came to power with the so called ex gov as the power minister who prefers to watch the downward trend of our power generation. My soldiers friend, why can't you direct your grievances at those in power? This man you have beaten had no power to generate, he is like a robot programmed to ration the little megawatts allocated to the area. besides, have you forgotten that there are others who also needs energy which they do pay for unlike you people in the barrack.

This is wrong moves by the soldiers because the power workers only supply what is generated.

BTW no one deserves to be physically abused in the course of their duty.

The soldiers can beat up everyone in Ibadan DISCO....but the issue is that a problem which has been cooking since the 1970's is a problem that won't be solved immediately.

Even if PMB had started building power stations in July 2015.....they would have still been under construction now.

If it is AEDC in Lafia Nasarawa State, I could have joined the soldiers.
But AEDC Lafia performed miracle around Easter o, from around 12noon on Saturday till about 6:30PM on Sunday electricity was just on cintinuosly but I could not meaningfully used it because I was always thinking that they will soon switch it off

Well....when PDP left in May 2019....generation was at 5000-6000MW....which means that on the average Nigerians can only get 12 hours of light a day.

And then there is the facts that it takes years to build a new power station, or a hydroelectric power plant. Plus we also need to sort out the transmission system.

They can beat all they want....but the problems in our power system cannot be sorted out in just ten months. Or even five years. There is a good reason why we now have DISCOS and GENCOS.....private investments (Including from our pockets too....yes...we have to start paying for light too!).

You can join all the crews in the world to thrash the AEDC staff ...but that won't fix the ancient transmission system, bring the $1BN yearly needed to improve power supply, or even increase generation to the needed 20000MW that would guarantee at least 24 hours power supply.

Seems like everyone is in love with Mr Cane today!

OK....here is what PMB should have done on July 1 2015...

1.Started building five new power stations that can each burn 500MW....that is 2500 MW in total. Completion dates of power stations? At least by 2018.

2.Started fixing the transmission system which is so out of date, one private investor wondered how it had been working all these years back in 2014. Cost of doing that....hundreds of billions of naira per annum. Length of time....at least five years. (And there would even be worse power cuts because most of the grid would have to be taken offline while replacements go on.).

3.New hydroelectric plants. Time for that...four years.

4.Metering the whole of Nigeria...that is doable in one year.

Let's be honest....even if APC had hit the ground running...it would have taken a good ten years before you people would have seen light.

(This is not a defence of APC...just telling it as it is. If GEJ had won...it would have been the same old story).

This is the problem in Lafia: currently, as I heard, something like a 22kVA line supplies Lafia, but at the same time a stronger 33kVA line passes over Lafia from Makurdi to Jos! Lafia is the capital of Nasarawa State and I cant see reason why that 33kVA can not be dropped in Lafia. I have seen in this same Nigeria, where a sub-station (or is it distribution station they call it) was cited and built, all from scratch, within six(6) months!
It is, ironically, in very same Lafia that AEDC has refused to distribute pre-paid meter, because they know that they will loose money they are illegally getting from people.

That's bad...and it all boils down to the issue of the transmission service being out of order.

As for meters.....sigh.
