After the U-17 worldcup, our league would boast of at least 11 stadiums with artificial sturf on them, is that not an improvement? we have teams doing well at international tourney against all odds within and outside Nigeria. if a team could do well with all these negativities, don't you think the league deserves a little bit of respect?

PSL vows to set high standards
MNINAWA NTLOKO  Published: 2009/08/06 07:18:01 AM
THE world is expected to cast an unprecedented spotlight on the domestic premiership in the coming season and Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO Kjetil Siem warned yesterday that the heightened interest would require the top-flight campaign to be run at a consummate level of professionalism.
The PSL season gets under way tomorrow night.
With the 2010 Soccer World Cup just 10 months away, Siem said the administrators, players, match officials and the nation at large could not afford to drop the ball “at such a crucial chapter of our soccer. We have to deliver the most professional product ever because the world will be watching,” the Norwegian said.
“We want to sell South African football to the world and we have to take advantage of the opportunities that will be availed by that kind of exposure. That means it is absolutely crucial that there should be very little margin for error. “We are aware that it is impossible for a soccer season to be run from start to finish without any challenges or mistakes. But we still have to endeavour to run a perfect season that has as little errors as possible.”SA came under the spotlight during the Confederations Cup in June, giving the world a glimpse of what to expect next year.

With the curiosity expected to switch to domestic games in the remaining months before the World Cup, the PSL is planning to reap the benefits of the exposure. After SA won the rights to host the World Cup in May 2004, the value of South African football skyrocketed.
World football governing body Fifa’s historic decision to award the World Cup finals to SA finally changed the fortunes of a sport that was grossly undervalued by some businesses for decades.
Asia’s ESPN Star Sports and sports satellite and cable network Eurosport are believed to be among the parties that are interested in buying live top-flight matches in the coming season.
Most of Europe came to know about South African football when Eurosport secured the rights to televise a Soweto derby (Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates) live to more than 43 European countries in November 2007. Live images from Durban’s Kings Park stadium were televised to more than 22,3-million households in nine languages.
Siem — who officially assumed the reins in August 2007 from Englishman Trevor Phillips — said his contract would come to an end next year. “I would really like to stay on because I love this country. But I have to respect my contract.”
He said European perceptions about SA had changed and many of the sceptics had come to respect the PSL. “I know that there were some people who laughed at our goals in the beginning. Look at us now.
“We have managed to greatly professionalise this sport and in some cases it is of a higher standard than some countries in Europe. But by the same token, we do acknowledge that there is still room for improvement and we continue to work on that. The perception has certainly changed in Europe and there is genuine interest.”
Siem said the shortage of venues would be the biggest challenge in the coming season as construction is continuing at many of the stadiums that the PSL would be using under normal circumstances.
The 2009/10 domestic premiership season will get under way tomorrow when holders SuperSport United face Maritzburg United at Woodburn Stadium in the first match of the anticipated campaign.

If our league is ranked above the North African leagues then its a welcome development.

The quality is there, we just need to put things in place, the branding and packaging, Television, Administration and stadia.

Omo Naija why?

If this was an exam 98.8% would have failed outright because they failed to understand the question. In this case the criterion used to rank the leagues is perfomance at continental champions leagues. so wats the beef?

Yes it is true of the poor infrastructure, corruption and mismanagement but solely on the basis of the criterion it is true. Now u may disagree with their choice of criterion, if so do ur own analysis and include the parameters or criteria which you think are significant but let me say in football its all about results. So no criterion or parameter can be bigger or more significant than results . By the way thats wat Nigeria achieved at least during this section of the caf champions league: having 2 teams at the very latter stages of the caf champios league.

At least, despite our poor infrastructure and player welfare, Naija league teams always make their mark in continental competitions (except that useless bayelsa utd angry). Enyimba and pillars will be repping us next year and i know without a doubt they wont disappoint. . . at least enyimba wont cheesy

We have world class teams that are supported far and wide. Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are king and has the best support in Africa. Both this teams consist of Followers not Fans. They are considered to be movements not clubs.
