The clitoris is a small pencil-shaped body of tissue that is about am inch long. If you spread your labia minora apart and look at the top (front) where they come together, just below the hair of the of the mons pubis, you will see the small hood that overlies the clitoris.

The tip of the clitoris can normally be seen peeking out from under this hood. The uretha opening, or outlet of the bladder, is below the clitoris and between it and the vagina.

Since the top of the clitoris is sensitive, gentle stimulation normally produces sexual arousal. The clitoris contains erectile tissue (tissue that can become engorged with blood), which causes the clitoris to become enlarged during sexual excitement.

Sexual stimulation of the clitoris does not always have to be directly applied to become effective. Because the labia minora form a hood over the clitoris, and because this hood is actually attached to the clitoris, movement of the labia minora will usually cause clitorial stimulation.

During intercourse as the pressure of the man's penis causes movement of the labia minora, stimulation of the clitoris is produced,whether or not the clitoris is touched. The same results occur during pre-intimacy when the man gently pulls and stimulates the labia minora and the clitoris.

It is interesting to note that once a woman has experienced orgasm and have established orgasm as her response to sexual activity, the presence of the clitoris is not absolutely necessary for achieving orgasm or sexual fulfilment. Consequently if a woman develops growth that requires surgical removal of the clitoris, she can continue to have satisfactory sexual responsiveness.
