You can install updates but will immediately lose root privilege. The only way not to lose root privilege is to be flashing the updates through your custom recovery, that means you'll always need to backup your data, and download the full roms of over 1 gig each time you want to update.

Left to me,both phones are exactly the same thing,just the note 4x misssing some LTE bands,and there is noting like note 4x global version,we have
Note 4 global version and note 4x with global rom(the rom on the note 4 global version installed on the note 4x)

You should rather update manually direct to MiUi 9.
I personally updated straight from MiUi 8.2.2.0.
No waste your data, just make sure you follow the steps succinctly.
