Onitsha, a city in Anambra state, is the most polluted in the world, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

In a report on Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution, the organisation said Onitsha has about 30 times more than the recommended small and fine particulate matter (PM).

Kaduna was listed 5th, while Aba and Umuahia – both in Abia state – came 6th and 16th respectively, leaving with Nigeria the highest number among the 20 most polluted cities in the world.

WHO says in the past two years, it has monitored 3000 cities in 103 countries and has found that globally, air pollution, has risen by eight per cent in the last five years.

WHO measured the level of pollution by the amount of “small and fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) during the five-year period of 2008-2013.

“PM10 and PM2.5 include pollutants such as sulfate, nitrates and black carbon, which penetrate deep into the lungs and into the cardiovascular system,” the report read.

The rise in air pollution has caused a rise in “the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, increases for the people who live in them”.

WHO says people in low income countries are the worst hit by air pollution.

“More than 80% of people living in urban areas that monitor air pollution are exposed to air quality levels that exceed WHO limits,” the organisation said.

“While all regions of the world are affected, populations in low-income cities are the most impacted. According to the latest urban air quality database, 98% of cities in low- and middle income countries with more than 100 000 inhabitants do not meet WHO air quality guidelines. However, in high-income countries, that percentage decreases to 56%.

The European Union (EU) Senior Expert on Sanitation, Tope Babalobi, says that 1.7 million people in Ekiti State practice open defecation. The Nation reports that Babalola said this during a breakfast programme on the Ekiti Television (EKTV), Daybreak Nigeria yesterday January 26th.
Babalobi, who is also the National Chairman of Water and Sanitation Network, urged the residents of the state to maintain a clean environment to avoid falling victim of Lassa fever..
“Rodents and rats have no business coming to your house if it is clean. Eateries, restaurants, schools, shops, markets must prioritise sanitation. If you manage your waste very well, these diseases will be far. This is a challenge to us as individuals in our homes and business premises,” he said

Look at what Yorubas turned the former once beautiful Nigerian capital into. Poor Yoruba management is killing Lagos, yet Lagos is supposed to be the best city in SW, if it's ranked third worst city to live in the world, what's the fate of Oshogbo and Ibadan?

Lagos is Ranked as the 3rd “Worst”/Least Liveable City in the World by the Economist Intelligence Unit – Do You Agree with the Ranking?

15.08.2012 at 12:38 pm By Adeola Adeyemo 79 Comments

The Economist Intelligence Unit has ranked Lagos, Nigeria as the third worst liveable country in its recently released 2012 Global Liveability Survey.

The liveability report which surveyed 140 cities around the world to assess the best or worst living conditions gave Lagos the 138th position. This was a drop from its 137th position in the 2011 ranking. Following closely after Lagos was Port Moresby which took the 139th position and Dhaka, Bangladesh as the 140th position making it the worst liveable city in the world.

Ranking first on the list as the city with the best living conditions is Melbourne, Australia with an overall rating of 97.5. Vienna, Austria ranked second while Vancouver, Canada ranked third. Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa took the 92nd and 96th positions respectively.

London, UK is ranked 55th, while Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the next host of the Olympics also shares the 92nd position with Johannesburg.

The liveability report surveys 140 locations around the world to assess the best or worst living conditions. Cities are scored on political and social stability, crime rates and access to quality healthcare. It also measures the diversity and standard of cultural events and the natural environment; education (school and university); and the standard of infrastructure, including public transport.

The Economist Intelligence Unit produces regular reports on the “reports on the liveability”, and cost of living, of the world’s major cities, which receive wide coverage in international news sources.

The United Nations Development Programme has named South-East Nigeria as the most human security secure geopolitical zone in Nigeria.

This is contained in the National Human Development Report for Nigeria, 2016.

The report adds that Abuja, which is the Federal Capital Territory, is the safest city to live in Nigeria as it ranks low in the Human Security Index

The UNDP defined Human Security as safety from chronic threats such as hunger, disease and repression as well as protection from sudden and harmful disruptions in patterns of daily life whether in homes, jobs or communities.

The Economic Adviser, UNDP Nigeria, Mr. Ojijo Odhiambo, said at the launching of the report in Abuja on Friday that the North-East and the North-West remain the most affected areas in Nigeria

The report adds, “The report further highlights the existing gap in human security across the geopolitical zones of the country; – the most human security secure geopolitical zone is the South-East while the North-West and the North-East geopolitical zones are the least human security secured, with residents of the Federal Capital Territory being the worst in most realms of the Human Security Index.

“The North-East region of the country has been the most affected by the more than five-yearlong military insurgency. It also remains among the least developed parts of the country.”

Enugu made history, Wednesday, as the only Nigerian city among 35 cities from across the globe invited to join the 100 Resilient Cities Network (100RC) pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation, New York.

The announcement was made during The Rockefeller Foundation’s Urban Resilience Summit in Singapore. The other three African cities that made the list alongside the Coal City of Enugu are Kigali (Rwanda), Accra (Ghana) and Arusha (Tanzania).

The choice of Enugu was predicated on the transformation of the road network in the city under Sullivan Chime. This was in addition to numerous national and international recognitions that have been bestowed on Enugu state. The organizers of the network said that Enugu was chosen from nearly 350 applicants on the basis of its ability to “demonstrate a unique vision for resilience, a long-term commitment to cutting across levels of government and sectors of society, a special attention to the needs of the poor and vulnerable.”

The Foundation stressed that Enugu like other Network cities will serve as a model for other global cities that seek to build their own resilience.

This second wave of cities will join 32 cities that won last year’s 100 Resilient Cities Challenge, forming a growing network of urban centers around the world that are ready to respond to the social, economic and physical shocks and stresses that are a growing part of the 21st century.

Other renowned cities of the world invited to join the list in the 2014 edition include Athens, Barcelona, London, Paris, Boston, Chicago, Amman, Sydney and Singapore.
100-Resilient Cites was created by an initial $100 million commitment by the Rockefeller Foundation as part of their Centennial last year, recognizing the trends of urbanization and globalization that characterize this century.

i cant (or didnt want to) believe this post and was about to discredit this claim as i A) knew/believed that the Chinese were the biggest culprit when it comes to pollution and B) WHO didnt specify the top 10 cities, on their site.... but to my horror, i found an article backing this post, kai!!!!! lipsrsealed lipsrsealed cry i guess, thats another deadly issue in Nigeria that needs fixing then.

culled from Globalnews.ca
Onitsha, Nigeria holds the dubious crown of the worst air pollution in the world, according to data released Thursday by the World Health Organization. The river port city has on average about 30 times the WHO recommended amount of particulate matter in its air.
But it’s hardly alone. WHO says that 98 per cent of residents in large cities of low- and middle-income countries are facing excessively high air pollution.

Although incomplete, the data collected by WHO’s Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution Database shows that the only cities that consistently meet the organization’s air pollution guidelines are in Western Europe, North America and Australia.

Along with Nigeria, cities in China, Pakistan, India and the Middle East have particularly poor air quality, often with more than five times the recommended amount of particulate matter in the air their residents breathe. Of the top 10 cities, three are in Nigeria, two in Pakistan, two in Saudi Arabia and one each in Iran, India and Afghanistan.

not even ONE Chinese city in the top 10, unbelievable!

You are obviously suffering from not knowing the meaning of dirt. What's not clean including the air you breath is dirt and it doesn't have to be garbage.

And t talking about dirt and garbage, Peter Obi admitted that his state was extremely dirty with garbage.

Raker300, Easternactivist, ilovemystate and all concerned..stop giving the jobless troll attention as we all know the basis of the assessment and even the WHO confirmed that the result from Onitsha is not reliable in the same report, so why do you worry about anything? Leave the thread for him to continue breaking his head.

However, the WHO also said on Wednesday that the pollution data from Onitsha was not necessarily reliable because it came from a single monitoring station.

It is difficult to get accurate measurements in Africa. You can get super-high readings, but ideally the measurements should be done over a year to include different seasons and times of day. The reading in Onitsha may be representative but not altogether reliable,” said a WHO spokeswoman

shup up there!!! There is no mention of dirt in the article. Go to WHO website and see it for yourself. The problem is with ships emitting bad carbon from poorly refined fuel...also heavy construction due to increase in population.

The only mention of waste is the "waste management system not up to international standard"

If you want keep lying to yourself that the east is a bad place. We and the rest of the world know the truth
