Advice On Solar Energy Needed. by ASL33: 12:26pm On Jun 05, 2016
Am finishing my small house soon hence planning ahead on how to tackle the issue of power failure in our dear country. Right now it seems the power supply will not get better anytime soon so my quest to provide it myself.

Description of what to power.

Four bad house.

1) 1 65inc led tv, 1 42inc led tv, 1 32inch LCD tv.
2) 1 deep freezer, 1 normal standing frigde/freezer.
3) Electric bulbs maybe 10 at a time.
4) Fans normal once.
5) 1 A.C. at a time. 2h/p.

Now I need the cost of a solar system that can power these for me and the components I need to buy. Not i dont intend to connect to the national grid at the moment. I have a 10kva sound proof diesel generator for back up.

Info and advice needed.

Thanks and happy Sunday.

You'll need at least 24v 3KVA inverter which is responsible for converting the DC of the batteries to AC. Cost is estimated to be N110k. If you're building it locally with the help of a technician , it may be cheaper.

You'll need solar panels .It is rated in Watts . The higher the Watts , the faster the batteries will charge . Highest rating in the market is 250 Watts . Your project may require about 8 of the panels ( 250 watts X 8}estimated to cost N45k each.

You'll need a charge controller which comes in different qualities . A #20k charge controller will do.

Then you need sets of batteries. Batteries are used to store the charges from the solar. The higher the number of batteries , the higher the number of charges it can store and high higher the time it will last . Relate it to a big pipe ( solar ) supplying the tank ( batteries) with water ( electricity) . Though the tank will take longer time to fill compared to a smaller one, but the water will last longer .
Solar batteries ( of at least 100 Ah) cost about #40k . for better results and longitivity in d supply of power , you may need at least 10 of these batteries smiley

Depending on your consumption of electrity , you'll be provided with uninterrupted power smiley

First lets calculate the total wattage of your appliance. I am going to remove the Ac from the equation for proper audit

65 inch led tv, 67 watts * 1 = 67 watts
42 inch led tv, 45 watts * 1 = 45 watts
32 inch LCD tv. 11 watts * 1= 11 watts
Deep freezer, 500 watts * 1= 500 watts
1 normal standing frigde/freezer. 300 watts * 1 = 300 watts
Electric bulbs 20 watts * 10 = 200 watts.
Fan 50 watts * 3= 150 watts

Total = 1273 watts

Recommended Inverter 2kva @ 24V
Controller choice = 40A @ 24V
Battery capacity = 240AH
2 batteries of 200AH will be required => 200AH
Battery Energy = 200AH @ 24V = 4,800Wh;
For a panel of 200W X 7hours of sunshine = 1400WH
No of panels required = 4800/1400 = 4 panels

Solar System Requirement
2.0KVA @ 24V Inverter
30A @ 24V MPPT Controller
200Ah @ 12V Battery
200Watts Mono Solar Panels
PV cables (4*4mm²) 20 meters
Power cables (1*10mm²) 20 meters
Circuit disconnect
Panel bracket (Rooftop/ground mounting type) 1 Set

This quote is enough to make anyone interested in solar to understand what is needed for any load *thumbs up*

One question though, what effect does the amperage of the charge controller have on the entire process? Would a smaller amperage reduce charging time? Why did you not include it in the bolded calculation? And shouldn't the battery energy be 400AH @ 24V be 9600Wh? undecided

Each panel has a constant amperage it delivers, the more panels you have the bigger the size of charge controller to handle the current.

If you use a small controller, your batteries won't charge properly and will burn out in a short time.

There is controller in my calculation, I mentioned it twice.

If you combine 2 batteries in series.
(12v, 200ah + 12v, 200ah) = 24v, 200ah.

The reason why we use series is to obtain a higher voltage, thus 24v

The energy energy becomes 24v * 200ah = 4800wh

If you noticed in my calculation, i didn't include 2hp Ac. The poster says he already has 10kva generator, that can take care of Ac.
When it comes to solar i always avoid appliance like Ac, inverters are designed for light loads

please can you name the brand of TV quoted here, or were you assuming that the TVs would be in Low energy conservation,
my 43 Samsung (plasma) pulls 150 watts (watts meter reading) in eco mode, I am currently looking for a brand that would be able to conserve as such. The best of same sized LEDs i got were rated 80 watts, these pretty much higher than what you quoted. .

The poster didn't say the brand of the TV, so I used an energy calculator.
energyusecalculator.com/electricity_lcdleddisplay.htm

However this calculation is based on simulation. When it comes to live installation, an energy audit will be carried out to ascertain the true watt of each appliance before operation

we have 2kind of solarpane mono and poly but mono charges faster .u can buy and hybrid inverter if u dont want to buy charge controller separately if u are buying separate charge controller we have two types mppt and pmw but charge controller is plenty outside dont buy pmw charge controller nt effective. charge controller comes in .12,24,48volt for battery all inverter are all deep cycle but comes in different cycle we have 1000,2000,5000 the cycle we determine the years it will use best brand of battery rita, genus, index,gp, visit repairelectronics.com.ng buy panel at wholesale prize

We did this installation yesterday, the client already has a Back up system and wanted to upgrade to Hybrid. Secondly he wanted the system to stay outside the house, so we built an outside rack and mounted it outside.

Hi.

Can two solar panels of same voltage but different wattage be connected in parallel?

For instance:
One 250w and 200w
Or
One 150w and 250w
