i find it shocking some Nigerians are actually suggesting channeling waste water to flood water drainage systems. It shows our level of knowledge. And these are future leaders? Not a very bright future it seems. 2 Likes |

jjagz: Thanks for the explanation. My question is aboit the connecting pipe from septic tank to.the soak away, won't there be odour sipping into the kitchen through the waste water drain lines because septic tank is connected to the soakaway? I am.presently digging my septic and soakaway and I have asked the plumber to keep the two tanks not connected because of the above reason, am I being unnecessarily afraid? Please advise. I still have time to tell him to connect them together if I can get a solid proof that it won't cause me grief of odours sipping into my kitchen down the road. |

fash78: All sinks should have a water trap( that U-shaped PVC pipe under your sink) that water trap prevents smell from your sewage from coming back to the house. Same as the water always left in your toilet. That is one of your protections. Secondly the vents on your break chambers ( cemented section where your would have a pipe connected to and opened to atmosphere) also prevent odor from going back into your house. Sometimes these pipe vents are connected at the point where your toilet piping meets with the piping from your bath / sinks. I am not an expert but my answers above are some of the few protections I know for sure. 1 Like |

But dude I will advice you consult a plumber. Trust me my brother it is not worth saving a few dollars now only to spend thousands later. Get it right once and save your self the headache of draining your septic tank every month for not connecting it to your sock away. Peace |

aoshi:In places like Italy.the UK and the US they have one line for all ie poo. Wee,waste water.so how do we distinguish which is which.mind you in the Nigerian context %70 of gutters are dug by citizens and not the govt unless you live close to a major road. 1 Like |

All who intend on having adult convo on this matter should come to the property section where you can ask anything discuss anything 2 do with building. We have seasoned builders architects and Engineers there all Nigerian based. |

Interesting topic. My concern in all these is warding off odour obviously from the pits to the kitchen and bathrooms. I have experienced this in some apartments and it can be terrible. 1 Like |

erico2k2:Central sewer lines you mean, is different from flood water drainage(gutters. You can't connect your domestic waste water to a flood water drainage system, it is wrong. Don't even try to justify it. Nigerians provide water, electricity for themselves anyway so what stops people from having their own septic tank & soakway pit? Drains are meant for flood water only. Come on people! 1 Like |

ice4u999: Trust me bro I am using a plumber to do this work. Whether he knows what he is doing is another question. He is the one asking me whether I would prefer him to connect the septic tank and soakaway together to drain excess water from the septic tank to soakaway or if I prefer that both tank not to be connected. When I asked him what is the best practise he said he prefers the two not to be connected because of odours slippage into the house. When he said that I got worried. This kind of thing need to be standardized to help the client. I should not be the one making decision like this there should be a standard for how septic tank and soakaway should operate. Now you have got me worried about constant filling up of the septic tank if it is not connected to soakaway to drain the water and my plumber is saying it is possible there could be slippage of odour into the house if they are connected What man go do now ? |
