Without mincing words, it is wrong to pipe into the public drain ("gutter".). Under normal environmental protection law such as NESREA's or USEPA, both soil waste and domestic wastewater ought to be piped into either a public sewer line or septic tank cum soak-away pit. However sir, the size of your septic tank, SAP and soil absorption rate is very important. Depending on the population equivalent (PE), the size of your septic tank and SAP would vary. Another option is to have a cesspool (cesspit) for the wastewater only from bathrooms, laundry and kitchen. I could assist you with septic tank and SAP sizing. NB: which ever way though, its a crime to pipe wastewater to public drain. The public drain is meant for rainwater conveyance and other miscelleanous water spills (flooding cases for example). Your wastewater constitutes foaming pollution due to high sodium content, alkalinity issues, pH, and it can be harmful to adjacent receiving water bodies which hosts aquatic life and other biotics. 13 Likes |

Soak away should be dug, or would you like to see snakes crawling out from your kitchen or other areas as happened in Thailand recently? 2 Likes |

VisitorsCanteen: Lol.. I keep saying it that our governors are lazy. All they do is to sit in government house waiting for allocations every month end.. If not if only they can think deeply, people like you are supposed to be fined heavily for abusing the gutters and the environment in general. You don't see people channeling their waste to gutters in developed world because it is just wrong. If you can have money to build a house then at least you should have 8-10 thousand naira to service your waste once in every 5 years. 10 Likes 1 Share |

idris4r83: Where i built last 4 years, thats how i did it. It hasnt filled anything. Its a modern way of dealing with bath, kitchen and wash waste water. No gutters dear. Everything moves from the chamber to the septic tank, excess water from the septic tank is drained through a connecting pipe to the soakaway. 3 Likes |

Frankiss44: I beg to disagree at the bold part sir. This isn't true and correct all the time. Though, I live in rural area, Sabo-Yaba, Little Rd, precisely, but even my in-laws who lives in Lekki Phase One have their bath and kitchen water channeled to the gutter. Where can be more urban than here. By the way, we're talking of Bath water here nah! No be poo, so what's the "biggy" in putting it there? 2 Likes |

Kindly take note. Soakaway pit can also be used for poo. The striking difference is simply in the fact that a Soakaway pit allows for natural seepage of waste water into the earth while retaining the solid wastes (poo) but a Septic tank allows for the retention of both the poo and the waste water. Generally it is better to channel waste water from bathrooms and wash places to the nearby drain/gutter. Engr. Osaz' 2 Likes |

mbhs139: So you truly feel the primary purpose of the drainage is for bathing waste water? We are talking about bath water and kitchen waste water here oh... Channeling both to a public drainage is wrong and should be condemned Sir... What exactly is your in law in Lekki running from,10k maximum to empty his tank every 5years? If you go to lekki you will find out that it is probably only 2 out of 20 persons that will channel their waste to a gutter because it is wrong, classless, unhygienic and even unlawful. Few people doing it are those that still carried their Rural mentality to Urban vicinities and they escaped with this barbaric act because of the failure of our government 12 Likes 2 Shares |

Naughtysite: This is also another bright idea too. You cannot suggest gutter because there is no difference BTW you that channeled your kitchen and bath waste to a public gutter and people that dump solid waste on that same gutter. When the drainage gets block the impact of ur bathing water will be on the road. And the funny thing is that you will never see the advocates of the barbaric method coming out to dress the gutter even on environmental days... Yet every little thing we end up blaming the government. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Frankiss44:I'm talking from experience. In my new office anytime i opened the door i perceive this terrible stench . Air freshners weren't helpful. When I called the plumber he said the stench was due to the fact that the wash basin waste water pipe was connected to the toilet bowl pipe which connects to the septic tank. 6 Likes |

Onyochejohn:Onyochejohn it baffles me how Nigerians go to extreme lengths to save very little amounts of money. Channel all wastes into soakaway pits, soakaways dont get filled up easily, I have said it many times, but they won't listen, they will rather pass it into gutters. I stayed in a house with my parents and siblings for 10 years yet the soak away pit never got full. Passing it into gutters is unhygienic, evacuation of soak away is easier and more cost effective than treating typhoid and cholera. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Frankiss44: Thanks for your observation but why not consider it from the perspective that it is better and even cheaper the government or public waste managers treat waste or foul water from main drains at a collection points before emptying them into existing water bodies. Decentralising the cost of treating waste water to individual units/houses in a country like ours is obviously not a better Idea! There are systems that help you treat waste water before they are emptied into the drain. They are also cost effective to purchase, install and maintain. If household units can use these systems then the public drain will be safer, especially in flood prone areas. Now you see what informed the use of the word 'better' in my opinion. In the end, let the statutory town planning regulations relating to waste water management be strictly adhered to. |

jeftalene: Your explanation is better but is that what is applicable in our country today? Is it feasible in the next few years? Can our local government and state officials EMPLOY people to make this happen and work instead of just stealing our money while we foolishly applaud, praise and use them as points of contact for our own breakthrough. Perhaps some estates in Lekki are doing this already with COVERED gutters. 1 Like 2 Shares |
