1st world problems! We complain about our respective AFs with some justification:usually its financial. The KAF needs new FSBs and lifters yesterday, the SAAF needs MPAs and medium lifters,Naij needs to replace its F7s etc etc. What about the 1st world? These guys have the personnel and money to build, licence build or clean sheet everything.
Why then does SA have a greater ocean going fleet than Canada? Their only unrep ship ,the Athabascan is in worse shape than the Aradu!?

But, last week, it was reported by the Ottawa Citizen that the 43-year-old Athabaskan was no longer seaworthy and is being sent back to Halifax for extensive repairs. Athabaskan is a fitting symbol of the overall state of the Navy: Its engines require an overhaul, the hull is cracked, the decks need replacing, and the weapon systems are questionable.
....
.“It was garbage. Everything was always breaking,” says Jason Brown, who served as an electrician and technician on Athabaskan for seven years, ending in 2010. “We did 150 to 300 corrective maintenances a month.” Although Brown praises the ship’s crew, he often spent 20-hour days trying to fix equipment. “The two main engines didn’t like to play nice together. It was 4½ years before that issue got fixed.”

My goodness! Btw,they've no destroyers either.

The Uk has officially ceased tank production after 90+ years and now has less than 200 while their German boogeyman has 50% more and are well into the Leo 2 Mk 7 iteration with a bigger 130 mm gun.

The cut would mean the army’s total number of Challenger 2 tanks would be reduced from 227 to about 170. Whilst Germany has 306 main battle tanks, France 200, Poland 971, Romania 437, Russia 2,700 and Serbia 212.

Apparently MBTs are unneeded in todays battlefield-which goes to show maybe they've spent too much time fighting 4th world Afghans and locally made Iraqi T 72s with domestic armour weakened by years of sanctions. It seems the Ajax will take over the role of the Chally 2-how its 40 mm gun will deal with T90s,Leo 2s or even T 72s with Kontakt 5 is unclear.

Even the US isn't immune to these problems:
in fact most USMC aren't airworthy! With some of the oldest fighter jets in service, Marine Corps figures are even worse: In December, 74 percent of Marine F-18 Hornets were not ready for combat — 208 of 280 aircraft; see below for details.] Such striking numbers underline why Defense Secretary James Mattis, military leaders, and many legislators have prioritized fixing readiness for the force we already have, an immediate crisis, over the long-term build-up of a bigger force that President Trump promised in his.
https://breakingdefense.com/2017/02/62-of-f-18-hornets-unfit-to-fly-dod-hill-focus-on-readiness/

GASSSPPP!

Over the last decade flight line availability of USMC choppers has halved:
Marine helicopters have seen the biggest drop in readiness. Only 42 of the Marine Corps' 147 CH-53E Super Stallions are flyable, or about 28.5 percent of the CH-53E fleet, according to Marine aviation officials. At the end of 2009, the CH-53E's mission-capable rate more than doubled that at 63 percent, with 39 percent of the helos fully mission capable.
https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2016/04/26/the-marine-corps-aviation-fleet-is-in-peril/

Even our aircav has a better ac availability rate! HTF did this happen-misprioritisation or poor planning? Was it corruption-your guess is as good as mine. Let's all keep things in perspective and recognise the difference between wants, needs and a budget as we go about our fan girlism in future.
