The only people who sh1t talk the F35 are those who have no idea what it is and no idea how projects work. Conve

"B...but Its not that good"

20:1 K-D against F-16s at the last Red-Flag. F-16's have a *real life* K-D of 76:1. Run the numbers... if 1 F-35 has a K-D that is a factor of 20X greater than a platform with a K-D of 76:1... what kind of K-D can we expect from the F-35?

"B..but muh $1 trillion"

Now that it has entered regular production it is at $90 million per unit, its cheaper than its "competitors" (ie: F15E Strike-Eagle is over $100mil, ). Once extended production begins (production for US allies who bought it) per unit costs are projected to drop *below* $80 million per unit. which is the same price as the plane its replacing (F-16 Block 70 costs $80 million)

Just as an indicator, here is an F-35 using IR to detect enemy ground targets from 30,000ft while flying at Mach 1.2. Oh, and the red-squares you see on the targets? Thats the FCS telling the pilot that it has worked out a firing solution and that he can engage... all he has to do is press a button. Oh, and he doesnt even need to move the plane to look at the targets, his helmet allows him to "see through" the floor of his plane.

If the above video doesnt have your jaw on the floor then you dont understand enough about aircraft to realize just what an earth-shattering advance this is.
$80mln in your dreams

apart from stealth what else does the F35 offer?
don't shout networking and sensor fusage

$80mln in your dreams
The United States has struck a preliminary deal to buy F-35 jets from Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) worth about $13 billion, clearing the way for a larger multi-year purchase that aims to bring the cost per jet down to $80 million by 2020, sources said.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-airshow-f35/exclusive-lockheed-f-35-jet-price-falls-6-percent-to-below-90-million-sources-idUSKBN1K50D3

F-35 will be the same price as a brand new F-16.

"What does the F-35 offer? Dont talk about the biggest things it offers"

Dude, there is the fact that it absolutely destroyed the jet it is replacing in air-to-air combat, or that its going to be a frontline fighter until 2070 (I will be over 90 years old then), or that a standard F-35 multi-role carries specialized reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and jamming gear that normally only lives on specialized aircraft, will be the first cost-effective stealth platform in the multi-role class or is a full generation ahead of anything anyone else.

Here is quote from Vice that really sums up why the F-35 is so goddamn special:

In essence, it's fair to think of the F-35 not so much as a fighter with fancy electronics, but the other way round: as a super-sophisticated surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft that just so happens to be armed to the teeth — unlike the typical ISTAR (Information, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) planes, which tend to be lumbering things based on the passenger jet that just flew you from Newark to Albuquerque.

If you take these two things together — sharing a sensor picture and cooperative targeting — it means that if you have a lot of F-35 aircraft up in the sky, each of those pilots has an enormous sphere of influence. They can see stuff hundreds of miles away, way beyond visual range, and shoot at it with missiles also from hundreds of miles away. Each pilot stops acting like a guy in a plane shooting at stuff and becomes a sort of air traffic controller of death, picking up targets way the hell off in the distance, directing missiles to and fro, and steering them into targets.

I really love this quote about the F 35

“What the public doesn’t realise is how dominant the difference in information is.”
Legacy jets, with the help of AWACs “may have a general idea that there’s an F-35 out there, but they don’t know exactly where we are,”
The distinct information disadvantage causes pilots to get tunnel vision.
“ Everything they see becomes stealth aircraft out there. Every radar hit, every communication is about the stealth jet. They want to illuminate or eliminate a threat they can’t handle.”
Even extremely capable operators fall prey to the F-35’s psychological advantage. “It has nothing to do with their skill or technology. They’re at such a technological disadvantage.”
“ I’ve seen guys in F-18s turn directly in front of me and show me their tails cause they have no idea I’m there.”
“It aggregates to a completely inept response to what we’re doing in the air. People are so hellbent on shooting down the stealth fighter that they invariably make mistakes that I can exploit .”
– Dan Flatley, former USMC F-18, and now F-35 pilot.

The issue with the F35 is that it will be harder to maintain needing more money, manpower and time compared to a upgraded F16 or F15 that can have everything the F35 does minus the stealth. The F35 is not a bad aircraft but it not a be all end all aircraft. You need some thing low cost to do the normal work. And to many countries want the F35 to be there primary fighter and it will only drive costs up

F35 will cost less to operate than F16. One of the justifications for F35 is low maintenance costs due to high reliability. A lot of people are operating under delusion and ignorance. To suggest that A vountry like the US will waste money $x00s in developing a costly to operate aircraft when the second main objective of the aircraft is actually low operating costs.

I have freind who is USAF aircraft mechanic and based on experience with other stealth aircraft F35 won't be cheap. You pay for stealth.
