There will be more electric in Volvo besides the high performance Polestar. The first of them is the Volvo XC40 Recharge. It is the most ecological version of the compact SUV, which announces a range of more than 400 km with fully charged batteries and a high power level. It joins the XC40 range in 2020 to the plug-in hybrid version, the XC40 T5 Twin Engine.

The new Volvo XC40 Recharge (P8 AWD Recharge, to be more exact), moves thanks to two engines, one that is responsible for driving the front wheels and another the rear, making it a total traction. Each one has 204 HP, so the total power of this drive system is 300 kW (408 HP) and 660 Nm of maximum torque. This new electric SUV announces good performance. Despite its 2,150 kg weight (almost half a ton more than the heavier combustion version), it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds. Much of that extra weight is due to the 78 kWh (75 usable) battery, which also implies having a smaller trunk, 413 liters (37 less than conventional versions), although under the hood adds a second trunk where you can load a travel bag not very large.

With alternating current (the one you receive in your home) it is charged at a power of 11 kW, so that a full charge would be completed in 7 hours. If you use a fast recharging point for this task (it admits loads of up to 150 kW) in 40 minutes you fill 80% of the battery. The autonomy exceeds 400 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle, a very relevant figure. There are few aesthetic differences compared to other Volvo XC40 with conventional mechanics. The most visible are the closed front grille and the Recharge mark on the C-pillar. The load socket is located on the left rear flap (in the combustion it is refueled just on the other side). Inside everything is very similar to the XC40 we tested. Yes we appreciate a dashboard more in line with the electrical mechanics it carries and the infotainment system is based on an Android operating system, as a great novelty.

Lexus ES gets all-wheel drive for the first time in its 30-year history

The version with a wheel arrangement 4×4 – ES 250 AWD – is equipped with a 206-horsepower four-cylinder atmospheric engine with a volume of 2.5 liters.

The Japanese brand has been producing the Lexus ES mid-size sedan since 1989, that is, its history goes back more than 30 years. During this time, the model has changed seven generations, the company presented the current “four-door” in the spring of 2018 at the Beijing Motor Show. The car is based on the GA-K platform, and Toyota Avalon, RAV4 and Highlander are also based on it.

Throughout the existence of the model, the Lexus ES has always had only front-wheel drive, and now the Japanese manufacturer has decided to bring to the market a modification with a 4×4 wheel arrangement. The all-wheel drive transmission is borrowed from the Toyota Avalon sedan (introduced in the US in the fall of 2019): it has a rear wheel coupling that can transmit up to 50% of the torque to the axle.

The version with all-wheel drive is available only in the Lexus ES 250 AWD version, such a “four-door” is equipped with a 2.5-liter A25A-FXS four-cylinder atmospheric engine with a 206 hp output. (maximum torque – 249 Nm). This engine is paired with an Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission.

Now in the US, Lexus ES can be bought with a hybrid power plant, which is based on an “aspirated” 2.5 and 120-horsepower electric motor (the total system output exceeds 215 hp). Also in the American line there are versions with a 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine (torque – 362 Nm): this engine is also equipped with the F Sport version.

The price tag of the most affordable Lexus ES 350 in the States starts at $ 39,900, and the most affordable hybrid will cost at least $ 41,810. Lexus will announce prices for the new all-wheel drive version of the sedan later, closer to the start of sales.

By the way, all-wheel drive won’t be the only new Lexus ES for the 2021 model year. Thus, the model range will be supplemented by the ES 350 Black Line Special Edition (it is based on the F Sport performance). It can be distinguished by its black rims, the same spoiler on the boot lid and the side mirror housings. The palette has several new color options for the body (blue, black and white), and in the cabin there is a contrasting black and white trim with gray stitching. A total of 1.5 thousand of these machines will be produced.

Next-generation Chevrolet Equinox crossover will move to another platform

The new generation model should be presented in 2024. Its production will be established at several factories.

Chevrolet has been producing the Equinox crossover since 2004, and since then the model has managed to change three generations. Sales of the current generation of the SUV started in the American market at the beginning of 2017. And at the beginning of 2020, the updated Equinox was declassified: in January, photos of the Chinese version appeared on the Web, and in early February, Chevy officially presented the refreshed cross for the States. Nevertheless, the manufacturer has already drawn up a plan to release the “fourth” Equinox.

Despite the very recent presentation of the 2021 model year car, the company is already preparing for the debut, albeit not soon, of the next generation Equinox. According to the GM Authority, the crossover will be shown in 2024, and production will begin in the same year at the General Motors plant in Ramos Arizpe (Mexico). It is expected that later, in November of that year, the model will enter the assembly line at another GM Mexican plant, which is located in San Luis Potosi.

And in February 2025, according to the publication, the release of the “fourth” Chevrolet Equinox will be set up at an assembly plant in Ingersoll, Canada. At all of these sites (as well as at two more General Motors plants – in Argentina and China), the production of the current Chevy crossover has been launched.

It is reported that the “third” Equinox will be on sale early in the first few months of 2025. This means that for about three quarters, two generations of SUVs will be on the market at the same time.

Models of the third and fourth generations will be very different from each other. So, at the heart of the current Chevrolet Equinox is the GM D2 platform, Buick Envision, GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Orlando are also based on it. And the new crossover, according to the publication, will move to the GM VSS-F trolley (it will share it with the Buick Encore and the Chevrolet Sonic). There is no information yet on the motor range or other features of the next Equinox.

Lotus entered the Chinese holding company Geely in 2017 and has had sufficient funding since then, but so far it has not presented anything other than the flagship electric hypercar Evija. Meanwhile, according to Auto Express magazine, a relatively affordable and massive novelty is just around the corner – it will hit the market next year. It’s high time, because we haven’t seen a truly new Lotus model in 12 years (the last was the Evora, which debuted in 2008).

Contrary to expectations and previous promises, the lineup will not be joined by a crossover, but by a sports car on a completely new, very lightweight platform, and its engine will not be a hybrid, but a gasoline one. If Lotus buys engines from Toyota for its current models, then in the light of integration into Geely it will look logical to switch to corporate units, that is, to Geely engines, but modified by Lotus specialists.

There is no exact information on this score yet: earlier in an interview with British colleagues, Lotus Cars CEO Phil Popham stated that the Chinese owner does not limit Lotus in the choice of power plants.

Of course, Lotus will also have new hybrid and electric models, but the Type 131 specifically will rely on the traditional values ​​of the brand (light weight, powerful engine, perfect handling) and export markets, in which the environmental agenda is not very acute. If the UK plans to completely ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines (including plug-in hybrids) in 2035, and Europe is about to start rolling out huge fines to automakers for excess CO2, then in the US environmental legislation has recently been significantly relaxed, so that Lotus now is the time to tackle this huge market.

Of course, it will be difficult to conquer America without a crossover, as well as the countries of the Middle East greedy for Western auto exoticism, but the update of the regular Lotus lineup will begin with the traditional model – most likely, a mid-engined, with a coupe or targa body.
