Lineup plans: Ferrari is not going to make hybrids from Roma and Portofino

The Italian sports car manufacturer explained that the platform of these models does not imply an electrified “filling”.

The Ferrari company intends to release fifteen new products over the next few years: this number will include both completely new models and restyled versions, as well as additional modifications to existing cars. So far, the Italian manufacturer is in no hurry to switch its cars to alternative power sources, preferring to equip them with traditional internal combustion engines. However, changes are still expected in the future.

The hybrid installation will subsequently receive the successor to the current Ferrari F8 Tributo. Its history began back in 2009 with the appearance of the Ferrari 458 Italia. Six years later, the car was converted into a 488 GTB, and in 2018 a special version was presented – the 488 Pista. It was her modernized version that became the current F8 Tributo coupe, which debuted at the end of February 2019.

The current model is equipped with a 3.9-liter V8 biturbo engine. Its output is 720 hp, and the maximum torque is 770 Nm. This engine is mated to a seven-speed preselective automatic transmission. Acceleration from zero to “hundreds” of Ferrari F8 Tributo takes just 2.9 seconds. The sports car reaches speeds of 200 km / h in 7.8 seconds. The “maximum speed” for the coupe exceeds 340 km / h.

It is assumed that the successor to the F8 Tributo will be a really new model (and not another upgrade of the 458 Italia), and now it will already be a hybrid. It is expected to be based on a V6 engine, however, details about this system have not yet been disclosed.

According to the British Autocar with reference to Ferrari representatives, among the above fifteen new products there will be no hybrid modifications of the Portofino coupe-cabriolet and the Roma “two-door”. The manufacturer said it had no plans to electrify these cars, at least not in their current generation.

Recall that these models have the same chassis and wheelbase (the distance between the axles is 2670 mm). They also share the motor – this is a 3.9-liter biturbo-eight, inherited from the F154 model. The Portofino’s output is 600 hp, while the Roma’s engine is boosted to 620 hp. (the maximum torque in both cases is 760 Nm). If the coupe-convertible is equipped with a seven-speed “automatic” with two clutches, then the “two-door” has an eight-speed “robot”.

Honda already test autonomous off-road vehicles

If a few weeks ago we saw how Volvo already sells transport services with autonomous trucks, now Honda joins this trend of having vehicles without drivers off the roads, where complexity increases. They are still in an embryonic phase, but the capabilities to perform outdoor tasks autonomously are very large.

Honda has already tested prototypes in search and rescue, firefighting, construction, agriculture, snow removal and now seeks partners to promote this technology. To the platform of an ATV quad with 4WD total traction, the upper half has been removed, replaced by a set of sensors, an autonomous driving team and the rest of the necessary elements depending on the task to be performed. This robust autonomous work vehicle platform (AWV) has a system of guides that allow you to equip all kinds of accessories. For now, it does not move too intelligently, since it can barely be configured in the Follow Me, Pattern (which repeats a path repetitively) or From A to B. But with just these three functionalities, it is able to be of great help.

Honda has already been testing it. First towing a lawn mower keeping the underbrush at bay in a 72-hectare solar farm in North Carolina (United States), on the other hand in Colorado the fire department had them following their men, taking them the heavy equipment while they went by steep lands to extinguish the forest fires. The instrument panel is now a virtual 12.3-inch, and the size of the multimedia display on the center console has grown to 10.25 inches.

Also on the front console appeared a shelf for wireless charging of the smartphone, and USB-charging is now available for passengers in all three rows. The automatic transmission selector in the form of a washer gave way to a more familiar-looking swinging lever.

As an option for Discovery Sport is now available branded “transparent hood”, that is, cameras that allow you to see the part of the road off-road under the front wheels, as well as a salon rear-view mirror with a built-in 9.5-inch screen on which you can display a picture of the installed in the upper part of the stern of the camera and observe what is happening behind without blind spots.

Fans of outdoor activities can order a waterproof key-bracelet and swim with it in the sea. Improved finishing materials (including eco-friendly recycled polyester suede) are also reported, and that the middle-size sofa is now stacked in the proportion of 40:20:40.

The body of the Discovery Sport has been reworked with the possibility of installing lithium-ion batteries in it for soft hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, at the same time its rigidity has increased by 13% and the capacity of the fuel tank has increased by 20% (to 65 liters). A rechargeable hybrid based on a 3-cylinder engine will be presented only at the end of the year, but the soft 48-volt hybridization has already affected all-wheel-drive diesel and petrol versions. We are talking about an assisting ICE starter-generator, which is associated with a crankshaft belt transmission and provides additional power during acceleration, and when braking and coasting it generates electricity and stores it in the battery.

Suzuki hatch has a second clone from Toyota: Starlet returns to the market

“Five-door” under the revived name Starlet is going to be sold in Africa. The model is a Suzuki Baleno with Toyota emblems, and in the range of the latter brand there is already a Suzuki clone – Glanza.

Toyota and Suzuki announced their cooperation a few years ago, one of its points is the “exchange” of cars. At the moment, Toyota has “borrowed” two models from a partner, both are still available only in India, and production has also been launched there: this is the Glanza hatchback (launched in 2019) and the Urban Cruiser subcompact SUV (it debuted the other day, orders are open), then there are Suzuki Baleno and Vitara Brezza respectively. Suzuki, in turn, is preparing to bring the Across crossover made from RAV4 to the European market (production will be established in Japan). Meanwhile, according to the agreement between the firms, Suzuki clones with Toyota emblems will not be “exclusive” for India – they will also be brought to Africa. The Indian company Maruti Suzuki will be the first to export the hatchback, and the African version has been renamed: the cars in the pictures, which were at the disposal of GaadiWaadi, have a Starlet nameplate on the tailgate.

Note that in the Toyota range there was already a Starlet model, it was produced from 1973 to 1999 (a hatch, and in the 80s there was still a station wagon), during which time it managed to change five generations. It is curious that in the latest generation, this Toyota has acquired a “sports” version with the Glanza prefix.

The current Glanza differs from the original Suzuki Baleno only in emblems and a radiator grille (although the Urban Cruiser cross did not become an exact copy of the Vitara Brezza). The new “five-door” Starlet for Africa has so far been photographed only from the back, but, most likely, nothing has changed except for the name for the export version. The length of the Baleno / Glanza / Starlet is 3995 mm, the wheelbase is 2520 mm. Trunk volume – 339 liters (VDA method).

The Indians are offered Glanza in two trim levels, while the Baleno has four – Toyota has refused the cheapest. Apparently, the company will do the same with Starlet. The hatch equipment list for Africa will probably include climate control, a multimedia system with a touchscreen and a rear-view camera.

Jaguar Land Rover will make its own V8 gasoline engines, but not for long

The AJ-series 5.0-liter V8 compressor assembly will move from Ford’s closure plant in Bridgend, South Wales, to JLR’s own facilities in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, but BMW units will replace those Ford-genetically engineered engines next year.

The Ford Motor Plant in Bridgend was launched in the late 70s of the last century and at the best of times produced 700 thousand units a year. Now this plant is being closed as part of Ford’s global restructuring program, the last engines will be assembled here in September, after which the young British company Ineos Automotive will be engaged in reformatting the plant to suit its needs.

Now in Bridgend, Ford produces for its own needs 1.5-liter Ecoboost gasoline turbo engines (also known under the in-plant name Dragon), old aspirated Sigma family (in particular, they are bought by Caterham) and the aforementioned AJ V8 compressor series for Jaguar Land Rover.

Recall that until 2008, the Jaguar and Land Rover brands were part of Ford, after which they were sold to the Indian Tata Group, but the British, as we see, still have motor ties with Ford. In fact, the AJ-V8 is a Ford development of the mid-90s, later “doped” to modern condition by JLR specialists. The contract assembly suited the British quite well, but the sudden winding down of Ford’s activities in Bridgend forced them to start assembling the flagship units themselves, that is, to buy all the necessary equipment from Ford and transport it to Wolverhampton. The transfer and installation will of course take some time, but Bridgend has produced enough stock of AJ-V8s to keep Jaguar Land Rover in short supply.

According to Autocar magazine, the AJ-V8 engines in Wolverhampton will be produced for a short time – from three to five years, during which they will be replaced under the hoods of Jaguar and Land Rover with supercharged V8 engines from BMW, which are easier to fit into future environmental regulations and are easier to integrate into hybrid circuits. V8 gasoline engines are important to Jaguar Land Rover from an image point of view for markets where the environmental agenda is less acute than in Europe, such as the USA and the Middle East.

No shame, no conscience: scandalous message on the Bristol Cars website

The British company Bristol Cars, liquidated by the court in March this year, has recently stunned visitors to its website with a cynical statement by its chairman and owner, Indian entrepreneur Kamal Siddiqi. This statement turned out to be a fake, but it became an occasion to recall the sad fate of the British brand.

Bristol Cars was founded in 1945 as a subsidiary of the aviation company Bristol Airplane. Bristol cars were considered competitors of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, or, as they would say now, were positioned in the luxury segment. For the past thirty years, the company has been in poor financial condition and has changed owners. She went through a previous bankruptcy in 2011, after which it was bought by Frazer-Nash Research, which deals with electric power plants and belongs to the Indian entrepreneur Kamal Siddiqi.

Siddiqi wanted to revive Bristol as an electric vehicle brand, but the first model under the new leadership turned out to be deliberately traditional. In the summer of 2016, the company unveiled the Bullet Roadster with a naturally aspirated 375-horsepower V8 gasoline engine from BMW and an aluminum body covered with carbon fiber panels. The Bullet design was inspired by the open version of the Bristol 405 from the 50s. It was planned to produce 70 copies of the Bullet worth 250 thousand pounds each and then switch to models with hybrid and electric power plants, but something went wrong.

After the presentation of the Bullet, the Bristol company dropped out of the information agenda for a long time and surfaced only in March this year at the height of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection pandemic: Autocar magazine then reported that Bristol Cars were liquidated again and its fans are making great efforts to preserve the historical heritage (archive, equipment, spare parts and everything that may be of value to the museum).

On August 23, according to Jalopnik magazine, Bristol Cars’ branded website, which is still operational, featured a text message splash screen against the backdrop of a classic Bristol Blenheim coupe. This message, apparently, was posted by someone from the former employees of the bankrupt company, who still has administrative access to the site.
