What i know is that for every arrest made in Nigeria, there are several charges accompanying it. I doubt if that man was very wealthy he would be in jail. So let's not delve into what is right or wrong for we all know that there is no actual standard of justice in this country. 1 Like |

joseph1832: So how will you feel if a Hausa MUSLIM names his dog Jesus, writes the name on his dog's body, and walks into your church compound with it? What did that young lady say on the alter that made Bishop Oyedepo take laws into his hands to slap her? What i understand from Chinedu's write up is that the guy is creating unnecessary where people are living peacefully. 1 Like |

Edunews: Undeniably a good legal analysis which was put forward. But also besides the point which should really be looked into. Forget the legal technicalities and look at the entire incident from a moral standpoint. The real issue and question should be "Should the name given to a dog be sufficient reason to constitute a breach of public peace or lead to ethnic / religious violence?". Absolutely not. One may be surprised to discover that the alternative scenario illustrated by the author may not lead to breakdown of law and order as he may expect. There are a great many people who live by higher moral values and levels of maturity to know when and when not to dissipate good energy on needless violence. 1 Like |

1. The defendant boldly printed on the Body of the dog, the name "Buhari' (where has the name of a dog been written on the dog before)? 2. That the defendant paraded the same dog with name boldly printed, in the Hausa Section of the market. (He did not just leave the dog in his shop but wants it to be seen not just in the market but in the Hausa section) 3. That a certain popular Alhaji Buhari is a trader in this Hausa section of the market.[s][/s] now let me digest each paragraph stated above. 1. even human being has a name tag, police has a name tag! my dog goes with a name tag for easy identification to avoid hostility to strangers (because if u call a dog by its name, it might want to be friendly). 2. Nigeria has to be civilized and respect the section of our constitution which promotes freedom of speech and movement no matter your ethnic or religious inclination. 3. that so called Alhaji must be a bully if he believes that his popularity makes him above the law. meanwhile, the alhaji is an alien to this country without passport nor visa. it's about time Nigeria Immigration will be sanctioned!!!! |

Femich18:If this is what really happened then he was wrong and deserves the arrest. The ethnic and religious tension in the country is high. He just fuelled it with his actions. That action of his could have caused a lot of damage. |

So, in summary the man wasn't arrested for naming his dog Buhari rather cos he was guilty of breaching public peace and instigating violence. I concur. |

I commented about this man and the dog issue not too long ago where I categorically said that naming the dog Buhari is no crime but the intention of the pet owner was to breach public peace and incite the northerners in the market, knowing fully well that the northerners are very volatile people, some people on this forum where telling me to go and read Nigeria Constitution. Well done to the OP!!! 1 Like |

Alexgeneration:In this veiled attempt of yours to praise your institution let point it out to you that there is no contest between your institution and the University of Nigeria,Nsukka. They are not in the same league.......they aren't even playing the same sport. Just because a student fails an exam doesn't make his lectures incompetent in any way. If you had a point to make you would have done that without trying to criticise the lecturers and the university |

This is one of the reasons why the words " you are the leaders of tomorrow" will never happen in Nigeria. If a youth can reason this way, I wonder what the old ones will do.. We claim to be civilize, but we are only moving backwards. |

Alexgeneration: You don't have to resort to the use of ad hominium in your argument. And I don't think you read the op's write up and if at all, not with open mind. The case you cited is not on all fours with this particular case. If the situation is the way the op painted it, especially the fact of the man's printing the vexed name of the said dog on its body and conspicuously displaying same at the hausa section of the market, then, you cannot completely rule out that the act does not portend the risk to provoke. Human maturity/tolerance should not be unduly tested. The man has only been arraigned and not yet been pronounced guilty by the Police, the Court is properly equipped to look into the case and make proper pronouncement. I wouldn't fault the Nigerian Police on this. my take. |

The writer of this well detailed article containing his thought on the dog named buhari saga seems to be clouded by inordinate sentiment and his intent to show case his literary prowess. Now let me explain: (1) Inordinate sentiment: I see that the writer is also entangled in the shameful ethnic bigotry and divide that is damaging the unity of Nigeria. If the Nigerian society is a civilised one I don't see a reason why ethnic groups will pick on each other over trivial matters of mischief by a single mischievous individual. (2) Intent to show case his literary prowess: It's all clear that you have an excellent writing skill, which is why you wanted to impress people owing to the way you chose to buttress your thought on the incident. Finally if the writer did not see any overtone of intimidation and injustice carried out by the NPF and the hausa community against the man, then I think he was intent on playing to the gallery in the interest of a few best known to him. 2 Likes |

joseph1832: Please you did not read the article!! You may have to read it again. The key point is: "Inscribing the name on the dog and walking around with it in a Hausa market" Kindly look out for this!! |
