just check Nigerian map and see where the north occupies, then evaluate the three major ethnic groups and tell which of them is most loyal to each other and united in any small group it forms. these should give you a clue to what you sort.

Because while the westerners n easterners fight n keep malice,the northerners just look at them and smile. The problem is,the northerners use one big advantage to play the other regions. While others view the north as a region full of illiterates,they don't give much needed observation to what the north does which gives the north was of access.

Simple Northerners understand the power of a united front- What so many people fail to realize is that once it comes to National politics, the direction of the North is always a strong united direction. This makes them have their way all the time. Unlike in the south where infighting, backstabbing, envy, and so on go on. You will definitely agree with me that this is where the Northerners are ahead of the south despite the latter's claim of western enlightenment. A very good example is the recently concluded Ondo APC and PDP primaries. Not in the north where everyone sees the other as his brother irrespective of political affiliations.

1. The Fear Factor
The average Southerner is afraid of the average Northerner.
Some southerners will continue to live in denial, but this a fact.
The North has established herself as the Terror Base of the Nation.
The descendants of Usman Dan Fodio has no regard for human life.

Southern soldiers are afraid of northern soldiers.
Southern politicians are afraid of northern politicians.

Compare and Contrast, when the North spits fire, the South cows.
When the South spits smoke, the North raises hell.

"Fight against Boko Haram is Fight against the North" comes to mind.
"If any Southerner becomes Present, the North will make Nigeria ungovernable for him" - Another example

How did the south respond?

Just replay now, let the South make such statements and we all will see the venom of the North.


On this fear factor.. I respect Nnamdi Kanu for looking at them eye ball to eye ball and called the bluff.
Many do not know what Kanu has done and achieved by this singular act. Despite his being in jail, he is a rear breed from the South. Honestly, the South need such men.


2. The Igbo/Yoruba rivalry is another factor.
It is so sad that the duo of these nations are fighting for a supremacy Title that does not exist.

The truth is, any day these two nations will speak with one voice, the political power of the north will diminish. (They will increase their violence anyway).
The North knows this and will do everything to make sure it does not happen.

Who knows, the same way the divide and rule in the Eastern Region is crumbling, may be something may happen on the Igbo/Yoruba tussle.


3. The South is speaking more English
The South boasts of more education, but the ugly fact is that more of the so called education ends up as mere ability to speak, read and write the English Language .

The bulk of our educated class do not know much about leadership, politics, government, etc.
While are are pursuing Doctorate and "Professorate", the North is pursing political power. The north makes sure the laws of Nigeria suit them. And if does not like the last National Conference organised by Jonathan, they will make sure it does not come to light.
In the end, the Southern Professor will work under a semi illiterate Northerner.

Funny enough, the Prof will even go to church for thanksgiving.

As a very good example,
Amidst millions of intellectuals the South can boast of, it is now very obvious that the current President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, do not have WAEC Certificate.

4. Different approach to Patriotism
The Northerner is first a northerner before seeing himself as a Nigeria.
The Southerner see himself as a Nigerian before seeing himself as a Southerner.

While a northerner will sabotage Nigeria for the gains of the North, the Southerner will sabotage the South for the sake of Nigeria.

Any day the South will protect the interest of the South ahead of Nigeria just like the North, Nigeria will take her proper shape.

During the last election, many Southerners worked for Nigeria, many Northerners worked for the North.

I used to be more Nigerian than Southerner, Easterner or Igbo.
That has changed.

For me now, it is Igbo first, Easterner second, Southerner third and Nigeria Fourth (if need be).

5. Religion:
The predominant religion in the North is Islam.
To the Moslem, Islam is his religion and political party at the same time.
Islam does not separate politics and religion like Christianity.

So, the average northern Moslem will consider voting from religious point of view.
The average Southern Christian will consider voting from party, candidate profile and personal convictions point of view.

There was never a time Western region without Lagos was more populated than Eastern region.

Well, the North inherited the title of "keepers of the British colonial estate" that is Nigeria.


They are the representatives of the colonial power in Nigeria.
They are like the Chief servants in the colonial entity, they work in tandem with other willing servants from all parts of Nigeria.

In the final analysis of things, they are no better than the rest of the colonial entity dwellers, if anything they are worst off, for how can we measure power without economic and technological advancements?

OP, it depends on what you mean by "power" .

If political power, then sure, the North carries the day because politics is a game of number. Numbers, they have.

They often lead because the average northerner is very confident. In Nigeria, as in most parts of the world, the confident ones are always frontrunners, while the rest follow, regardless their strength, knowledge or agility.

While in the South, the average individual is gathering money to cater to his family, the average northerner is doing same so he could venture into politics (do not take this to mean that they don't cater to their families as well). Besides, having 19 of 36 states means that the North will always carry the day as far as decision making in a political setting goes.

As for Niger Delta- and IPOB-related issues, man's greed for power, I mean power in its totality, means that even Nnamdi Kanu will jail his fellow Ipobians if he were president. Such is the efficacy of power and respect.

The good old cliché: "absolute power corrupts absolutely" was derived from well observed phenomena.

It's nothing peculiar to the northerners alone. For every president, it's the bigger the territory, the better. It's when they lack access to the bigger ones that they seek a smaller territory to rule over.
