Why do Yoruba parents discriminate against Ogun ladies in marriage
I have noticed a trend among Yoruba parents when it comes to choice of a wife for their sons. Most (if not all) do not want an Ogun lady as in-law. Some have even gone far to detest Ogun men. This is not my personal opinion but an observation I made over the years. I am currently engaged to an indigene of the state and she was brought up in Ogun state to make matter worse. But in my entire family, no one has ever married an Ogun lady, so I’m about to make history against all odds. No one is talking but the look on their faces suggests a lot and I could remember growing up that we were warned against having anything to do with Ogun ladies. Even my friends and colleagues at work are all giving me this pitiful attitude and their body language suggests they are not feeling us but no one is bold enough to confront the matter since it is visible to the blind I will do anything to marry her. Too many dramas in the last six months. So everyone fears me coupled with the fact that they all want me to get married soonest.

But to me they are just like every other lady, some are even better (my fiancée is a testimony), so I don’t seem to understand why people discriminate against Ogun ladies, I WANT TO KNOW MORE PLEASE because our introduction is in November and we plan to marry before next valentine day.
I don’t know whether to delay things in order to think and carry out more research “but everyone I ask questions are now scared I might sell them out to my fiancée if they say the truth because they know we are strongly in love”. That is my conclusion as no one is talking yet everyone looks pale at the mention of the upcoming events.

I have not been very lucky with my affections. Discrimination is one of the reasons behind my bad luck. It is unscripted. It has eaten up the hearts of a lot of parents from most Yoruba states aside from lagos. For example most ondo ladies/guys can't marry from ogun. The hatred between ondo and ijebu people is legendary. If you ask why they can't marry ogun people. They usually don't have any.

The trend is changing though. Especially for the parents that resides in lagos. They care less about norms and traditions or Hatred passed on.

Your people's fears are rooted in facts. These women tend to be promiscuous, unsubmissive and uncooperative. Maybe you should live 6months in Ogun state and see for yourself if these beliefs are unfounded or have some merit to them.

Don't get me wrong, this behaviour isn't specific to Ogun women but there's hardly one without a history of promiscuity, and/or multiple marriages, etc. I can't say much about Osun, Ondo, Elitist women. Na the one wey I know I done talk so.

Like you said, nothing will change your mind so why should we bother supplying you with reasons why Ogun women are discriminated against. But it's good you know so you can go into the marriage with a clear eye. By the way, I think these things boil down to the individual character.

About your question, I do not know but my mother in law also implored her son to stay clear of Ogun women before we met. I am not Ogun.

Timbuktou As rightly put it.

To add to it they do like to associate with their husband's families. Too many to mention.

If you want a happy home go and sit with your parent and ask them what they think, opinion and approval if they don't give it do the needful.

Many people are suffering in marriage now or have ended the marriage not because of the lady but what covenant their fore father have enter into the past

Well, I think it's because of the belief that Ogun people have very potent juju, the daughters are witches and every single one of them is stingy. All na wash!

I'm proudly from Ogun though I hardly know my Ogun relatives. My osun Gramma still distaste Ogun people, she strongly opposed my mom marrying my dad. Now that we are here, my siblings and I are the only good Ogun people as far as she's concerned. Imagine her advising us not to marry Ogun people grin

A person is a person, a race is a race. We were all created differently. Ogun peeps rock cool!

By the way, its funny how Ijebu tribe only comes to mind when Ogun is mentioned... Ijebu peeps rock!

It is not really an Ogun ladies issue but Ijebu ladies in particular . we have lots of people of different dialect in Ogun state and the ones that I am aware that people mostly have reservation about marrying their ladies are the Ijebus.

I normally don't believe most of the things I heard about them but from my experience with the one I helped in facilitating her marriage to my friend, I will say the saying about their women is mostly legit.

@Op I beg you in the name of anything you serve pls dont marry from Ogun state .

Be it Ijebu Egba awori or anyone from Ogun state.

My reasons ? They are as promiscous as a dog.

Both men and women.

Thier married women specialise in having multiple partners even as married women. Worst case is that thier parents will even encourage them to do it.

I am from Ibadan and I have been living in Abeokuta for the past 6 years.

Even in church and my place of work. Their women and men are as promiscous as anything

Trust me on this ....I wish you the best

But Ogun.... Nah nah nah.

I have seen and read so much.

This matter again, they have thrased it over and over on nairaland. I was actually reading down waiting for someone to mention Ijebu and I was not disappointed.

I suspect you are from Ondo or Ekiti, It seems there was an issue in ancient times and they seem not to like each other. The Ijebus yab the ondos (and ekitis) as olode meta and seems the ondos too have on beef against Ijebus.

I have friends from Ondo that their parents have told them never to have anything to do with Ijebus, some Ijebu parents too dont like giving their childrrn to ondo.

Anyway, I won't advise you to leave a good woman because of stereotypes, if they have a problem with it they should speak out or forever hold their peace.

People are always entitled to their opinion.

Did you just say everybody is looking pale in view of the coming events wow. I actually pity that lady if you eventually marry her, If she sneezes it will be because she's from Ogun state, your family will use that to judge her, she will practically be walking on egg shells for the rest of her marriage, she makes a single mistake you will begin to see the "shebi we said it crew", Infact it seems they are grudgingly accepting her because they want you to marry soonest.

If you like bro leave the woman you have not found a fault in because of sterotypes, If you eventually marry her hope you will protect her from your people oo this one they are doubting in silence.

And last time I checked oo, People from Ogun state are getting married every Saturday, both to Ogun indigenes and non indigenes.

Proudly Ijebu cheesy cheesy

Lemme help you out with what they didn't want to tell you.

The stereotype is majorly
Juju
Iya won ma baby won fe oko ni(can't translate it literarily)
And some other ones they just mentioned here,

By the way some Ondos/ekitis do tell their children from a young age not to have anything to do with Ogun people (esp Ijebus). They feed it to them from childhood you even said so yourself.

Stereotype nooni

OP, please if you are no more interested in her let her know on time and make sure you marry from your home town to make your parent happy and subsequently receiving their blessings. Am very sure the lady won't want you to go against your parent wish.

Shym3xx:

What's the thread about? Is it about Ijebu people or just folks from Ogun?

Anyway, there are too many people out there in the world. If some backward Yoruba people aren't messing with the successful (when the successful ought to be ones running from them), that's their prerogative. They are the ones losing out and they can keep their amala eating arses where it is loool.

Well its about Ogun but you and I know the stereotype is majorly against Ijebus .

You ehn.

How have you been now, long time no see, I didn't see any ojude oba thread this year, maybe OAM4 is no more on NL.

Loool. So, it is Ijebu again lol. Some of these bottom feeding eaters and always hating on a group that's contributing almost 60% of success stories to Yoruba people. A lot of them are just mentally backward due to excessive consumption of amala loool.

Most Ijebu guys around aren't even checking for Yoruba chics (not even Ijebu Chics). And my elder brother/sister are with partners whose parents are from the hinterland Yorubaland bits and they have no problem. Anyway, those in Naij are just backward, hence most of them can't progress beyond brown roofs and servitude lol. Ain't no one got time for these people. They can do whatever they want with their undesirables loool.

Ijebu nyggahs are on the March to bigger things and bigger money. And we won't neglect these bottom feeders no matter the hate. We shall keep dragging them up, the same way Ijebu ancestors protected Ife from total annihilation when they were all busy fighting one another looool.
