Personally, If I'm to totally dump PHP, some of you already know NodeJS will replace it full time on my list, but after scraping NodeJS into my brain, I found Scala and saw the wonderful things the language has got to offer since it's also JVM based. Multi-threading in Scala is pretty awesome and the language has a less verbose syntax compared to it's uncle - Java.

So now I have also picked up Scala (Still learning) and plan to advance to Go by mid 2017.

Are you planning to leave PHP and the entire programming world?:
<?php
exit() ;
?>

Or you're planning to switch another language:
<?php
switch (PHP) {
case "{new_language}":
sleep(PHP) ;
start(new_language) ;
}
?>
Talk about it, and if none of the above, then I'd like to know whether you're very comfortable with PHP or the issues you have with the language.

@DanielTheGeek,

If I dump PHP now, I will be almost practically useless. So don't let me dump it.

However, I use python for data analysis, same as JaqL, pig, hive but there's a level of proficiency.

I intend on learning Java in a month or two from now. I should grab it easily based on my knowledge of OOP and design patterns if that's enough. I guess am not dull, am I

Hearing scaler, and Co ehn, una wan lost me...

Thanks for the contribution man, Scala is wonderful, you should give it a shot someday.

Nice, climbing higher indeed. That's such a big switch, why, if I may ask?

I don't even know PHP to start with. I started my programming career with Python and that's what I'm used to. Started learning JavaScript and Java few weeks ago. By the way, what's the hype with PHP sef.

The hype is that PHP (7.0) is faster than Python, got that?
But from a Python background it would be nice to soil your hands with some PHP.

Are you saying you'd leave PHP for all these? Or you'd hold on to PHP alongside all of these..

C and C++
I need to learn some real bony concepts that require C (a language with little flesh and plenty of bones; ugh, pointers are still killing me). C++, do I need to explain this? I'll need it in school this semester.

D
This language is described as a nice improvement on C++ (C++ without the warts). It's new and I want to use it for some future side projects. Maybe a compiled language that supports web development and is not as ugly as C will be nice for speedy apps. I'm still researching it.

Python
Good for rapid prototyping and yet powerful. I want it to be my go-to scripting language besides JavaScript. I also has some useful modules and is actively developed (the reason I chose it over Perl). I may consider Perl later.

Bash and PowerShell
For easy system administration on Linux and Windows. That's a plan for later but on my list. I heard they are also good for delivering naughty, malicious payloads for pentesting.

OCaml, F# and SML
I chose these pure functional languages for my adventure into Functional Programming.

Java
No choice. Most of the programming modules I'll take in the coming semesters in school use this language.

Processing
For data visualisation and some other interesting things. It uses Java and Python programming languages, and there is also a JavaScript library for it (processing.js).

Some logic programming languages and databases will follow later.

Why not learn other languages like me - I can use a wide-array of languages without sweat. This year for example, I have not even done any important stuff with PHP, it has been a JAVA/Objective-c year for me.

This is a whole lot on your list, you're literally "sudo apt-get upgrade"ing your brain. Good luck, bright future ahead.

I'm not dumping PHP, using it alongside other languages.
I'd say you're doing more of Java/Objective-c because you've been doing more of mobile apps recently. I've been more of some extreme PHP recently, mixed with Node tho but since I learnt Python, I haven't had the chance/opportunity to use it on something major.

Why not use Swift instead of Objective-C? What's the advantage of Objective-C over Swift?

You'd surely get rusty if you leave it for long, I'm just asking if you'd continue active development with the language. Like me now, I have not done any serious work with Python, I was thinking that Competition that Dhtml recently started will involve code, was ready to unleash the Python in me, lol. But unfortunately, I'm starting to get a bit rusty with Python.

Right, let's leave the Swift/Objective-C discussion for another day.

I'm not dumping it o, still much things to do with the language...it's just sliding out slowly while Node is sliding in slowly

After coding for like 15years, one thing I can tell you is that you never can tell with these languages. If you remember when flash came out then, it looks as if that was the end of javaScript animations.
As at that time, inserting a video into a web page via HTML codes was considered arrant nonsense but now, things don change. While the NODE.JS offers something great and fantastic, and NODE.JS is by far superior to PHP in many ways AS A LANGUAGE.
It would not be wise to ditch PHP because of NODE.JS - I can code fluently in both languages, and have even done projects where I combine the two together.

I'm telling you, FLASH was like the Holy grail at a time but now It's kind of deprecated already.
I agree, and I'm not leaving PHP...there was a time I combined the two on an express site via the node-php NPM package, wonderful results I must confess.

Go, Erlang, python and Nodejs are what i'm currently looking at. Php will always be there for the little little hacks and quick cash.
