IT was a sad time for the congregation of House on the Rock – The Refuge, Abuja, when news filtered in last Thursday that the stylish senior pastor, Pastor Goodheart Obi Ekwueme has quit the church. According to reports, many church members are still heartbroken and confused on the way forward. It would be recalled that Pastor Ekwueme is credited with starting the Abuja branch of House on the Rock founded by Pastor Paul Adefarasin. Pastor Ekwueme’s dedication, passion and love for his congregation have reportedly led to the phenomenal growth of the local assembly, leading to the construction of a multi-million dollar edifice strategically located around the Abuja City Gate, and dubbed The Refuge.

According to a source, no one is certain about the chartered accountant turned pastor’s next move as Pastor Ekwueme has not formally announced it. It is also unclear whether he would start his own ministry, as is common with Pentecostal pastors. Investigations by Naija Magazine Online (NMO) suggest that Pastor Ekwueme may be under intense pressure to ‘return home’, as one source puts it. ‘Return home’ suggests that he goes to manage the vast family business empire which spans across oil and gas, media, financial services and general contracting among others. Recall that Pastor Ekwueme is the son of Nigeria’s second republic Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.

In a related development, Pastor Ekwueme was absent at the church's last Sunday service that had the Founder and President of House on the Rock, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, in attendance.
