In fact, we are very fortunate to witness the repeat of those old good days when leadership is given to those who did not ask for it! In those days people of high quality are running away from ascending the throne of headship for what they know of heavy burden they would carry and their resolved to be contented to that which is only main for them. It was during the past that you can see a good leader crying with remorse only because he could not accomplish the responsibilities placed on him by his followers.
Very recently in our country, Nigeria, leadership is sought in a very crook way and manner to the extent that someone will never believe that somebody – no matter how qualified he is - may be given appointment “free of charge” without offering something tangible. Most positions are bought either in cash or in kind without considering the quality and suitability of the occupants. The Heads of MDAs, Parastatals, Consulate missions in other countries are selected based on political, tribal, regional or religious self-centered interests.
The rejection of presidential offer by Akinwande Akintunde, Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to head the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC); the turning down of Ambassadorial Appointment by Usman Bugaji of Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP) from Katsina state and Pauline Tallen, Former Deputy Governor of Plateau state, is an evident that things were no longer what they were. The polity has already started experiencing the change mantra of Buhari Administration.
Cataloging as their reasons for rejection, proper consultations were not carried out and of course, as the nominees are of greater quality, they are much occupied with some other projects worthy of dedication and commitments. Secondly, they are afraid of failure especially in this our country that does not appreciates efforts or rewards hardworking. They are very skeptical with the consequences of mistakes and errors that will result to insults and condemnations by Nigerians just like what is presently happening with Muhammadu Buhari.
However, this Government has proven beyond doubt, its commitment to changing from godfather-ism, nepotism and selfishness to fairness, justices and self-sacrificing services. The President is only trying to outsource technocrats, experts and qualitative leaders who will bring the desired change! Yes, some people must have suffered enough during campaign and election but their rewards is not only through appointments or contracts. They should know that what they did is a sacrifice to their nation for the enjoyment of their children, grandchildren, and grand-grandchildren to come.

God knows the clause attached to such offices that scared them away because buahri is running the nation like a military man but not democratically.

PDP members could take anything offered them in their time because they knew after all, their motives of taking such appointments was to go and embezzle. No wonder Defence Ministry portfolio was given to Obanikoro, the Lagos thug....and the rest was history.

Exactly! I was thinking to myself yesterday as well- isn't it supposed to be a credit worthy commentary to this government hearing people "turn down" appointments because "they had no idea they were being considered for such"??

And Wailers, in their ignorance, can't even see the propriety in that. cheesy

It's not a credit but a slap on the face of the president. No one wants to associate with failures. When you want to announce something or someone, courtesy demands that you intimate them. Before NOI or most technocrats in past administrations were called upon, it took a lot of consultation and they were finally announced. You cannot come here and ganish an insult to the office of the president. It's like telling your child to come and he says he will not because he is busy and you are celebrating him instead of asking what he saw in you that made him not to respond. Next excuse.

As in the thing pain them, no more free money.
If you see them with red eyes everywhere, wailing and hating on baba as if their survival depends on it, some of them in my hood were all free loaders even before baba and now that hard working folks are holding on tight to their money and the sources of dirty money is gradually drying up, grin grin grin grin grin their life is now waiting for baba's sudden exit which i pray should never come until 2023 grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin.

In the past, especially during the time of ATM's boss, they would have jumped on the offer knowing that it would be small job and large money but today, things have changed. Now, ministerial position means hardwork and not an opportunity to embezzle public funds.

Ofcourse you'll see it as an insult, after all you're an Nkem.

NOI was as incompetent as her buffoon boss. Under her watch billions were stolen.

She obviously wasn't qualified for the position but wouldn't refuse because of the slush money available to be had during GEJ's time.

Have you guys asked yourselves why thieves, embezzlers of public fund, morons and complete dolt are always your mentors and heroes? And it doesn't even matter which ethnic group they come from.

Once they are in the news for stealing, you guys adopt them as your patrons. SMH!

It is good for the health of our nation. It is not by force but an opportunity to serve ones fatherland. But it would have been nice if they had been informed or consulted so that the issues involved , e.g if they are presently free or could sacrifice their present engagements, would have been resolved. No matter what, it is nice that our tribe of politicians can turn down appointments; am I missing something?

OP but I disagree totally with your last paragraphs,
" Yes,
some people must have suffered
enough during campaign and
election but their rewards is not
only through appointments or
contracts. They should know that
what they did is a sacrifice to
their nation for the enjoyment of
their children, grandchildren, and
grand-grandchildren to come."

1. Are you telling me there are no competent persons among the party members to head some of these posts?
2. Presently there many incompetent non APC members but friends of Mamman Daura heading posts . So why did competent folks make sacrifice for the party to successfully emerge? So that incompetent PDP or Daura friends can be in power?
3. A good General disciplines and takes good care of his soldiers especially after winning a war for it engenders trust, loyalty, and a strong commitment to a shared dream. Anything contrary has serious consequences which Aisha Buhari is trying to prevent. God bless Nigeria.

that's not true. Theirs are an example, worthy of emulation. Tell me a single appointee under Jonathan who refused to grab such an offer when the pdp was in power... not even Ngozi okonjo iweala who was already engaged at world bank before she was nominated... there's no big deal in federal government appointment because the appointees don't do much. There are federal govt staff employed and paid to do the job. Political appointees' job is just to ensure things are done well and rules are followed. No political appointment isn't juicy, mind you. This government is laying on foundation our posterity will build upon...learn to say you don't want an appointment if you feel you won't function well due to your tight schedule, not just grabbing it because of the money involved . The plateau lady was quite comfortable as former governor. She cited 2 reasons...one, that she feels it should be zoned to other constituency to give room for fairness, secondly, she cited her husband's health...which many women would have abandoned because of the money involved. The Katsina man said he's hands are already full so, somebody else should be considered . They don't even know if they'd be posted to UK or US where they could access a better life but rejected the offer at the nomination stage....tell me anybody in the opposition who could do same. They'd rather die than miss the opportunity

The issue is, how many people really think properly in Nigeria again? Especially among the so called educated and the elites.
Our sense and understanding of leadership is so warped that they can't comprehend why someone will turn down an appointment.
To many of them, a political appointment is a short-cut to money and the reason our corrupt journalists would call some positions "juicy". You will not see them talk about the enormity of the work involved in the role - all focus is on the money the appointee can steal/loot from the position.

Our people have been so misruled that they don't believe people can be appointed based on their credentials without any prior notification or lobby or whatever.

It looks so strange that they begin to read different negative meanings to this instead of thanking God that all a person needs to do to get anything is hard-work and integrity.

so because Prof. Akinwamide rejected a political appointment, the OP is trying cast aspersions on his person albeit coached in 'soothing grammar'?

does the OP even know want this man has achieved in his life?

people reject government appointments for various reasons.

people like Prof. Akinwamide are particular about those that they work with & he would most likely prefer to be consulted properly & professionally & be allowed to choose his own team rather than be railroaded into working with incompetent hands.
