The Lagos State Government has proposed a new model in its approach to environmental waste management.

According to the state government, Olusosun, a popular landfill that has been a dumping ground for years, will soon become a model for the urban renewal and waste to wealth initiatives being undertaken by the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, while announcing the inauguration of the ‘Cleaner Lagos Initiative’, said the government was committed to finding renewable energy sources for the grossly underserved parts of the state.

Adejare said that five new power stations, one in each division of the state, would be built to generate electricity from waste, and that the numerous dumpsites dotting the state would soon be a thing of the past.

He added, “We are serious about meeting Lagos’ electricity needs because power is the key to economic freedom; we have shown in the past that renewable energy projects can work in Lagos with the use of solar energy, but we have only just begun.

“We must harness expertise from the private sector and utility partners to work with us as we move towards a cleaner, healthier and sustainable Lagos. We will close down Olusosun and Solus dumpsites sometime next year. Dumpsites are dangerous to health and the environment. The leachate and gas to be recovered from the proposed sanitary landfills will be put to good use.”

He stated that the state planned to regenerate Olusosun and turn it into a park, where intercity buses would end their journey and would no longer be allowed to enter into the city.

“Passengers will from there take taxis and intra-city buses to their destinations in town,” he said.

Very feasible. Involved in a project where the biogas generated from farm and organic market wastes is powering generators.

Ehen now we are talking, the waste after then can still be used as fertilisers the need for waste as raw material will increase, hence less waste will be found on our streets and water ways... other state should try and emulate this noble idea... Good one Lagos State... Good one.

may the almighty God bless the governor of Lagos state whom in my opinion is the only working APC governor

May the Almighty God also bless all the people of that state for their hardwork and contribution that had made them Independence on the federal government and had at least painted Nigeria positively to the world

May the Almighty God bless them all;
The Yorubas
The Igbos
The hausas
and everyone in Lagos

Lol!

They have been saying this since probably 2007, that they will close Olusosun and Solous 1 and 2. They installed pipes to tap the gas at Olusosun since, when the landfill was at peak gas production level...and did nothing. Instead they took World Bank loans and siphoned the money and be speaking English about Carbon Credits to reporters with hefty browm envelopes in their pockets. Private companies begged for opportunity to turn Olusosun into energy centres, the way Govt officials will show up for meetings without bothering to read their proposals would make you ashamed to be Nigerian. Are they using the sorting facilities to maximum efficiency yet? Did they not frustrate the efforts of Recycling companuies, refuse to assign LGAs to the different sorting facilities so that their Waste Collection coys have a more streamlined collection plan?

Lagos state is good at propanganda!

i have always envisioned this. its beta off for each state to think of standing on its own without the full dependency on the FG.
each state generating its own power, havin its own police force, etc. all dat shd b left for d FG z FG schs/institutions, FG hospitals, FG roads, and d flow of revenue from d FG to support these states
