Is abortion as dangerous as it is portrayed to be?

Over the years 'abortion' has been portrayed to be very dangerous to a woman's health, and with the help of films and television shows, this view has garnered popular support.

Hence the question, is abortion as dangerous as it is portrayed?

It is important to note first of all that films and television shows tend to present a skewed portrayal of abortion—when fictional movies and TV shows include a plotline about abortion, the tale typically paints the procedure as riskier than it is in real life. Analyzing 385 abortion-related plotlines from 1916 to now, it was found that while medical procedures like CPR are often shown as safer and more effective than the reality, stories of abortion are way more likely to end in the death of the patient than they are in real life. The obvious problem this report points to is that these fictional narratives don’t happen in a vacuum. These stories have real implications on the way people perceive women seeking abortions and their health care providers—especially in an era when conservative politicians argue that abortions are unsafe in order to justify laws that restrict abortion access.

Secondly, Medical abortions performed in the first 9 weeks of pregnancy have a very low risk of complications. This risk is the same as when a woman has a natural miscarriage. These problems can easily be treated by a doctor.
Out of every 100 women that do medical abortions, 2 or 3 women have to go to a doctor, first aid center, or hospital to receive further medical care. In countries where childbirth is safe, 1 in every 10.000 women dies during childbirth. Less than 1 in every 100,000 women who use a medical abortion die, making medical abortions safer than childbirth and about as safe as naturally occurring miscarriages. This means that a safe abortion with Mifepristone and Misoprostol is always lifesaving. Taking these pills is known as medical — as opposed to surgical — abortion. Despite their safety and efficacy, mifepristone and misoprostol are tightly regulated and, in many places, are difficult to get. The pills are legal in the U.S.; taking them without a prescription is not.

Lastly, The Abortion Surveillance Branch of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) maintains that induced abortion is safer than childbirth and that the serious complication rate is less than one percent.

Disclaimer: The writer is not trying to state that 'abortion' is not dangerous, but is it as dangerous as it has been portrayed to be? Let's therefore set aside our religious views for once and answer this question scientifically
