What is a husband dear?
Really, what is a husband for?

See, Sisi said momma said grandma said he's just for sex
A necessary element in procreation

So what is marriage then?
Really, what is marriage for?

Easy! Sisi said momma said grandma said it's permission for sex
A significant institution for procreation

But what of the companionship, the relationship, the partnership?

Well Sisi said you can get that anywhere. Ain't nobody need a husband for that
Ships sail errwhere

Aunty disagrees
Aunty has regrets
She married because time was getting away
Aunty settled
I think her husband did too

The lively, charitable, endowed person Aunty is
A husband was to be a companion, a partner, a friend - the best
But her husband is just a procreator and a provider. He's real good at it though

I said I wanted a husband to be my person.
The one person I don't have to share.
The one who'll bear with all my weirdness and whose oddity I'd find charming
I thought a husband was supposed to be the reason why I'd look forward to coming home everyday
I thought Marriage was supposed to be a fortress from the uncertainty of night and day

Sisi said that's all romanticized, wishful thinking
Momma said "hold on to that thought"

Momma is really the most experienced

But momma said men are weird, a burden even
And momma said marriage can get really hectic
You know, with breadwinning, and mansplaining, and sex drives and hurt egos
Still momma said a husband is to be cherished, tolerated too
And momma said marriage is a commitment with terms based on your values
So even when the going gets tough
And when the fairy tale ends
You gotta see that commitment through, all the way to the end

Grandma disagrees
Grandma says a husband is for sex and status
Grandma is a tigress out there for sure, I really can't say about in there
She left marriage because it didn't suit her
And for all the other suitors that came
They had nothing to offer her
Grandma was done with procreation and
Ain't nobody tryna become second in command to some man again

About that, Momma said in marriage, The man is the head and the woman is the neck
Let's see the head turning without the neck

Sisi disagrees
She says The man is the head and the woman is the head too
Afterall they say two heads are better than one

Do you see why I'm sitting here so pensive?
I don't want to be stuck in a lifeless marriage
I don't want to be stuck with a procreator provider husband
I was so sure the deal was a blissful lifelong partnership. Love, Till death do us part

But now I gotta ask:

What is a husband dear?
Really, what is marriage for?

Disclaimer: Sisi, Aunty, Momma, and Grandma are not real people. They are mere personifications of opinions.

Well, it depend on what you believe. So the definition is relative.

But the definition of a husband is more of a functional one( based on his duty and responsibilities)

By the way, that kind of ideas shared by those personas was propagated by those who went on protest in America in the 70s questioning why we say Father, Son and Holy Spirit and not mother, daughter and holy grand mother.

If I didn't already know what a husband's role in a marriage is....I'd be discouraged beyond all repair. Marriage has really come under attack...not only in the U.S...but unfortunately in other parts of the world (hint hint..Nigeria). So many theories...yet no real facts. It's because we've moved away from the basic Godly tenants of what comprises a marriage; therefore leaving bitter, hurting & angry folks who in turn spew out those same feelings onto others....how sad.

For wives, it's to have sex(the sweetest thing on earth) without guilty conscience. And for most ladies, husband is an end to poverty & the beginning of good life.

Sisi said...I was about saying I didn't say any of those before I saw your disclaimer grin

A husband, I think, is a best friend whose love/support/loyalty the wife should be able to count on at all time.

The marriage, I think , is a synergy of two who absolutely agree to walk life's journey together in agreement for as long as they both agree. Now if the agreement is based on love or any other thing, so be it.
