Chapter 9, MARITAL Shambles
___________________
Rolando Roland had a firm in the city and he was one of the smartest modern detectives around. However, his office was as a horse's shoe, very cramped but served it purpose well. Rolando kept it this way purposefully. He had completed his education years earlier as the third best student in his faculty and had since then, solved a number of cases. He could be likened to that fellow in The Cain Of Abel, a detective story he read often. He was apt to figure things out and he had a brilliant acumen, so, he lived nicely. But then, things were changing.

He had only recuperated from an illness two years ago, how he survived was even a feat he didn't know how he threw. This feat didn't come in chariots of leisure or beds of lilies though. He had, like the historical man, spent every yam in his barn to regain himself - every yam, so most often than not, he found himself digging up others' farmlands for yam tubers and even tendrils. He wasn't beaten yet, he was doing his might to cover his finances and so, hating him for betraying his wronged employer wouldn't be fair. In other cases he had handled, he had been compromised but he always found a way to still look flawless. If an evidence was bought off, there were always other affidavits. Always. He just needed to think smart. Timi's offer was mind-blowing but it was really risky. He was being paid to drop the case completely, he reasoned smart and he was bought. His mother always said he had the swollen eyeballs, which meant he was greedy, but that might have been his only undoing. That aside, he was a really good man - a smart good person.

It was a week and a day later, the streets were rowdy and everyone liked Christmases. The harmattan was severe and winds blew in through holes in curtains. Clothes hung to dry did quickly and some people looked white as scared ghosts.

Edwin could tell his friend wasn't alright but his friend still spoke as he spoke, only his face looked distraught.

"Hakeem, what's wrong?" He began, and Hakeem raised his eyebrows. A sign he observed correctly, Edwin noted. "You look very faraway, break it already." He looked worried as well, if he lost Hakeem to the troubles as well, he wouldn't survive, he thought and Aduke, even with her womb, wouldn't be able to stay strong for the both of them. Or maybe she could and he was underrating her strength. Either way, he wasn't losing his friend.

"Nothing, man. What do you see?" Hakeem was putting on a nonchalant look, "have you been dreaming of Nini?" He applied humour and winked, and for a slight moment, looked like Humpty Dumpty.

"C'mon, boy. Spill it. You look very disturbed, let's hear it." Edwin was sincere.

"Okay, Psycho, okay." Hakeem taunted, an habit he was starting to enjoy, "I'm just worried, really, about the case." Edwin raised a brow. "It's a week to the trial now and we aren't making much success. Rolando isn't getting it really well, he's one of the best hands around. Everything is shut. I'm worried." The last statement wasn't necessary, his voice proudly carried his worries.

Edwin managed a smile, he was worried too. Factly, he had been very anxious. At times, he'd sob silently while he was alone, putting all his sorrows into it. He was very scared of the trial, he fervently prayed Nini would just pull out. Like a miracle would just happen but miracles never happened when people expected. At least, he thought. Still, he had to be strong for Aduke and then, Hakeem. He was then shouldering a firm burden.

"I understand perfectly, Hakeem. I'm worried too but things will be fine, I believe." He was motivational enough to draw a smile off Hakeem's lips.

"I hope so, I honestly do." Hakeem smiled bitterly and Edwin was suddenly scared.

"Please ask Aduke to be here soon." His voice was strangled.

"Lover boy, I hear you." Hakeem winked.

______________________
Aduke couldn't have been the local girl who stole the Lawyer's heart with her character, for she lived in a mansion and drove cats; neither could she have been the one whose beauty was most mesmerizing, for very few could compete with female models as Edwin Alagba's ex-wife. Whatever it was, it couldn't be so easy to find in other ladies, so the barrister found it in her only. That didn't mean it couldn't have been her beauty though, for she intoxicated men when her face radiated.

Several times, before Hakeem got to her, he'd be checked at three different gates. Her mansion was a fancy block, laced with rare stones that looked like gemstones from the first tall, ugly black gate. The building had the air of Eden, albeit it was artificial. Hakeem fancied it like he did the affiche in Edwin's sitting room. Big cauliflowers and bougainvilleas roped round like leaves in an orchard and the interior itself was totally chic, expertly painted in a light shade of cream and pink, it was like a sanctuary from ancient China. She drove three big rides and could always afford pleasure. She was young in life though and had only gotten her fortunes from her late father, a tycoon who ran into troubles with the state's crime agencies a lot. She was orphaned too but she understood how business worked. She had a chain of establishments that brewed and sold beer, the path her father threaded. She had planned to create a fashion line and had had her buildings already before the crime agency visited again. But that wasn't all, this time, they were very convinced she traded in hard drugs like her father did and had charged her to court. While the case was still undecided, she had met the barrister in a casino she had went to chill and somehow, after some weeks, she felt in love and the feeling was mutual. Very. She had seen how he always got lost in her hazel eyes and its warmth. Then, one day, they fulfilled their desires and a seed was sowed.
_______________
Hakeem had always liked Aduke and he never failed to make his friend know. He always wanted them together and he wasn't ever going to let them be apart. He liked her beauty that looked reserved, her poise that beat the model's. He just liked the her for his friend only.

But Hakeem was worried, very worried. He couldn't open up to Edwin or Aduke though, for he wasn't sure what would happen. However, that Sunday night, he had a romping session with his fiance. Her name was Beatrice and she meant him well, so she slept the secret out of him. Hakeem never knew she did.

Then, pleased but mildly surprised, Edwin found Beatrice in his cell that Monday after Hakeem left. She put on a light yellow cheongsam that radiated her fair complexion. He didn't like her, really, but he hid it well always, however very glad that Hakeem found her appealing. She had food in a steel warmer and served him some. She cooked nice, he noticed. Then, several moments after, she told him Hakeem's trouble in the best manner her senses could muster. For a really long while, tears rolled down Edwin's cheeks, muffled constantly by hard, bitter sobs. He didn't know when Beatrice slipped away - with her food warmer, of course.

PLEASE REREAD THIS.

Marital Shambles, Chapter 10

Though a transfer into a better cell had been completed, life was still not easy. The metal bars clanked and the gentle sound of a key rustled in the padlock. Edwin woke up with a start, his head aching, and saw Hakeem coming in. His heart panged in pain and anger contorted his handsome face. The frowns on his face wore feathers on their caps, so they looked like rich Ibo chiefs. He looked frightening, and Timi, the prosecuting attorney would have loved to see him in this state: it would have been the perfect image for the rape scandal. Hakeem's heart was beating irregularly, his pulse moving violently in his ribcage. He put his hands up, dropped them, and began.

"I'm very sorry for not telling you," he expected a response but none came, so he continued, "I know you'd have wanted me to go and I just can't leave you..."

Edwin's barge in was quite surprising. "Shut up, boy!" He yelled, he was up on his feet, panting with his impulse in his hair. "You don't want to leave me here? Say it well."

Hakeem was shaking his head. No, no, his friend was taking out his frustrations.

"Mock me! C'mon, say it." Edwin was roaring again, he was taking it wrongly.

"That's not what I mean, shut!" Hakeem countered, "calm down and listen well. Listen!" He needed to restore sanity to his friend. "Just keep shut, old boy." He was sweating beautifully, each line fat and manly, "you're better than this, please." He noticed that Edwin was budging, "please, man. Aduke needs you, your kids do too." Hakeem soothed his friend in his silky convincingness. "You need yourself, I do too."

At the present, Edwin sat down wearily and relaxed his head on the table, Hakeem muttered a short appreciation. He could see the dilation Edwin eyes did when he heard kids, he decided to tease him more when it was right.

Then, he dropped the package he was carrying on the close end of the table, took a chair and sat in the cell's corner farthest to Edwin. He observed that the floor had been swept and that the walls had been dusted. He made a mental note to intimidate the officers the more whenever he was leaving. The armchair he sat in was rocking a bit due to its unequal legs, and it pleased him greatly. He could almost feel the frustration that sparked Edwin's reaction, his eyes felt peppery and water flooded his face. He let the tears run, inhibited, and his sobs shook the cell tenderly. He bowed his head and watched as the tears fall on his polished shoes and splashed on the floor. His heart was throbbing as though a dagger had been drawn into it, etched by sadness as shadows by sun.

"I'm sorry," Edwin whispered, he had been sobbing too. "I just feel very bad that you'd do this for me," he was choking in succession. Hakeem bared his teeth sadly and both gazed at each other like gay lovers.

Hakeem was glad sanity was returning, but a fear tugged at his mind.

"But, no." Hakeem's fright was actualized. "I won't let this happen." Edwin's voice was very solemn and warm. "You need to go - for us," his voice was pleasingly commanding.

"No, no." Hakeem's voice was weak and tired. He deeply wanted to go for the opportunity but a bond held him; his will. He couldn't, not to Edwin, he couldn't leave him at that time. If he was taking the opportunity, it was with his friend - the coming year but it was a faint proposition, as weak as the legs of a cold chick. He knew that such opportunities rarely came twice or thrice but neither did the connection he felt with Edwin. It was like hot, red rings, overlaying and bringing forth a deep glow of ember and beauty. He undid the top button on his shirt.

"You remember how we lobbied to be picked, uh?" Edwin's voice was starting to sound funny, "how we always thought we'd never be considered." Hakeem was catching the humor in the situation. "This is funny." Both burst into laughter, like a fat, overripe pawpaw. "So funny," he supplied and the laughter seized him afresh. It was pure pleasure, their voices thickly laced with infectious fun - as migrating birds.

"So, when is the deadline for following up?" Edwin asked, in good faith.

Hakeem swallowed, a strong knot of guilt played in his throat, "Thursday." Being monosyllabic was all he could do.

"C'mon, C'mon, boy," Edwin cheered, "you remember the last trip we took and that silly representative asked for Kola, corrupt minds everywhere." He laughed richly but Hakeem wasn't finding it funny. He felt taunted, like he was the mind his friend talked about. He almost wept again. With how things were, he couldn't say that their supposed last trip wasn't his; that he hadn't find bribery that bad; that he had gone to present kola to the fleshy government representative; that he was more ambitious than his friend - he couldn't. Guilt only caressed his heart while he did it but, at present, pangs of guilt put his heart on steaks and fed voraciously on it.

Edwin was concerned, he feared that Hakeem was taking it too hard. All that was needed was another lawyer, and they had a lot of them. Hakeem had three paralegals and any of them could interpret the law well. He decided to press further. "Younger bro," he began, "everything will be fine. You need to go for us. You've always wanted to be a SAN, even than I do." At this point, he missed eye contact and swallowed hard: he wasn't being truthful but the truth leaked out like black little seeds falling out of a carefully wrapped paper. Still, he proceeded, "Take this opportunity, complete this course, and you become liable for nomination," He tried to sound excited. "I might join you before you're done or I might not." He accepted reality.

The emotions were too tensed for Hakeem - the betrayal; the loyalty; the strong bonds of friendship and he let tears roll down his cheeks, each streak bearing guilt that Edwin saw but couldn't understand. He walked up to his friend and patted his back amusingly, taking notice of how soiled his tears had turned his shoes and the floor.

Minutes passed and seconds ticked, then Hakeem broke into a frenzy of laughter which Edwin was too happy to join.

"So, it's a set of twins!" He exclaimed, "wow!" He practiced a little dance and Hakeem had to hold his ribs from caving in.

"The scan says they are both babes. Someone apparently is in love with women," Hakeem jeered and Edwin grimaced.

"Where is she now?" Edwin asked, not hiding the enthusiasm in his voice.

"Oh, you mean Nini? Or is it Aduke?" He put on a tough face and Edwin shot him in his mind. "She's at home, in her bed's comfort," he was taunting.

"Please, make her see me today or tomorrow."

"Aye, aye, captain!"

"You should be out of the shores by Thursday," reality returned. "It's such a short while to say goodbye."

"Yeah, I'm sorry." Hakeem shook his head.

"When did you find out?"

Hakeem wished the questions would just stop. They were making his head ache and a mild panic was developing. "The night you were detained, I received the mail." He was sad.

"There's no need to be," Edwin read his friend, "we need a lawyer who understands the case already." The main issue resurfaced, "one of your boys can do it."

"Yeah, they should," Hakeem said grimly. "We could ask Roberto for his lawyer," he continued, "his lawyer would have more experience." He concluded.

"Yeah, great!" Edwin knew Roberto was very good, so he expected his lawyer to be too. He was concerned that Roberto hadn't made a lot of breakthrough though. He had only found an alibi who would testify that he never acted drunk in the bar that day. Only that, he thought and shook his head.

"I'll facilitate everything today," Hakeem broke into his thoughts.

As he watched his friend leave, heard the metal bars clanked and the ambience lightened, a new radiance was in his assessment of this man, his friend. He saw him in a new light, a new glow of life. It gave him enough reason to carry on.

Later that day, Roberto, his lawyer - a lady who Hakeem was sure had deep knowledge and experience, and Hakeem himself returned to the cell. Edwin retold his story, with little scratches here and there, and the lawyer appeared to listen attentively. She scribbled notes and seemed good as Hakeem, maybe even better than him. She asked intelligent questions and brought Timi into focus. But she was only acting out a script, for whoever worked with wise minds always danced to their tunes - always, since they are most probably alike in minds.

I'm quite glad to see things are lively a bit. The silence was killing and if I hadn't completed the story beforehand, I'd have stopped writing.

Read and criticize please. Call my attention wherever necessary. What's anyone's view of the story? Let me know.

Two more chapters and an epilogue to go.

Chapter 11, MARITAL Shambles
___________________

That Tuesday went badly for Edwin, for Hakeem and justice, if the latter isn't just a myth spoken of by tale tellers. When the skies are falling and our wings can no longer fly, we take desperate measures to hang in there, to have leverage. We find ourselves, in most cases, hanging on threads embossed with mud and dirt... but it is all we have, sadly. Somehow, men barely learn from others, as it is believed that lucks differ - truly; they do - and this is the blunder that wise men sometimes make, most wise men including Timi.

Timi held Nini's hands and looked into her eyes, his face strongly oozing emotions as a wine emits stench. He hadn't returned to his family, for Nini clouded his senses. He leaned in and clasped his lips over hers while his hands invaded her body and set fire to her insides. He fondled her womanly curves and handled her delicate edges with a laughable kind of demeanor.

A firewall of sanity went off in Nini's head, and a fire slowly started at her feet. She chewed Timi's lips with strength and fervor as the fire burnt to her knees. Her hands roamed her partner's bare body with great dexterity, his manliness responding and pressing into her stomach. She put her hands up and her light gown came off her seconds after. Her ample bosoms came to light, her nipples pink with excitement as they gyrated continuously. They looked beautifully full and delicate, Timi was amazed by the raw work of art. He bent and took both in his hands and his fingers played fiddle on each. The fire crept to her waist. The way the pink nipples moved fascinated Timi, each bulging and retracting - like the eyes of an enchanted frog, almost as if they had a heart that beat. He couldn't wait any further, his loin was pulsating, evidently aggressive.

Nini put her hands over her head while she moaned softly. Timi lifted her in his arms and took her to the firm bed in the hotel room. She felt him pull at her underpants and she raised her fleshy behind in a frenzy. Then, a knot loosened and the tears started coming. She felt his tongue on her womanliness and the tears increased. Her body convulsed in pleasure while her insides throbbed in anticipation of being probed. She didn't understand the mist her eyes was pouring and neither did Timi. Unconscious, she pressed Timi's head to her heat and he latched at it, poking and teasing while she squirmed in sublime ecstasy.

'Make me yours," her voice rang out, "probe my entrance, ensnare me!" She was already incoherent and looked like she would pass out. Timi smiled, it was the same old Nini; albeit a fuller one, a richer one. His loin plunged into her and the fire blazed in them. Her shrieks sounded funny, with hiccups seizing her violently. She held him tighter and scratched his back multiple times but all she saw was Edwin. His image floated in her head, putting bliss in her heart and the tears resumed. This time, raining in torrents.

"Edwin." A muffled sob escaped her lips and her heart boiled. All this while, Timi rammed her hard in missionary.

She loved Timi, or so she thought. A leverage.

The next day, Hakeem left for the USA. However, he felt at ease, believing he had left everything in good hands. A quite insane belief, so to say. Edwin had given him his best wishes the day before, it was enough. It would help him soar. Such hopes.

Roberto's lawyer wasn't important in any way to events. She was just a doll, playing catch for him. Her name was Karen Ihuoma and she had won some cases in courts. That Wednesday, she was with her client again. She sat in the armchair Hakeem had used, not minding the rocking.

"Mr Edwin, things will be fine, be assured." She sounded almost sure of victory.

"I'm skeptical, Karen," Edwin's voice was lazy. "I feel sick, I think an act from my past trails me. Are you a christian?"

"Ye-es," she thought her answer out, guilt pinched her skin.

"You might understand. Don't you think God is punishing me for something I once did?" Edwin's voice carried a deep despair.

"No, Mr Edwin." In spite of herself, she felt tender and bad, "you're a good christian, you've only been framed." She wanted to go on, tell him how great God was, how miracles happen but she couldn't bring herself to falsely raise his hopes. Then, for a brief moment, she wondered how the look on Edwin's face would be after he had been sentenced and she shuddered. She managed not to feel sad.

"I wish everyone knew that." Edwin was washed with sorrow and his hair was turning gray slightly.

She got up and gripped his shoulder, "be strong for yourself. You'll need it." Her hazel eyes were misty. Then she turned, "I'll see you tomorrow. Take care."

Then, Aduke came in. Her face brightened Edwin's and he kissed her sweetly. "I love you. Whatever happens, I do." Her voice gave him life. A fresh lease of life that created endless possibilities in his head.
