Very unfortunate. This shows that:
1. He has no interest in investing in the rail which means he will lobby to ground the rail which Goodluck Jonathan struggled to resuscitate.
2. Nigerian roads are doomed. No country's roads (least of all Nigerian) can survive the pounding they will get from this number of trucks. So more money goes into road rehabilitation which is only a temporary solution to a permanent problem.
Nigerians should NOT laud a truck production company. Not at this time in our national development.
RAIL should be the focus now.
will the rail bring bags of cement to your street or shop? will the rail supply the filling stations their products? bad belly is bad. enemy of progress will always die of heart attack.

It doesn't work that way. Dangote has a wider area to cover than the Nigerian govt. It makes more sense for govt to build rail network.

Your argument makes a lot of sense....and I even gave you a like.

We need a better rail system....BUT unfortunately....

1.Rail lines cannot go everywhere.

2.It is going to take time to link Nigeria by rail properly...so we still need trucks.

3.Trucks are useful for a variety of things...more than just transport (Construction and mining for example)>

4.Even if Nigeria has a premium rail service like China, Japan and mainland Europe....we still need trucks.

Dangote Group of Companies has established a $100million truck assembly plant in Lagos as part of its efforts toward boosting foreign exchange and job creation in the country.

The group said in a statement on Sunday in Lagos that the plant was floated by the group in partnership with National Heavy Duty Truck Group Company Limited, (SINOTRUK), a Chinese firm.

It quoted Mr Anthony Chiejina, the Chief Corporate Communication Officer, Dangote Group, as saying that the plant, located in Ikeja, has the capacity to produce 10,000 trucks annually.

He stated the before now, Dangote had been spending heavily on importing trucks to distribute its products both locally and across African countries.
Chiejina said the conglomerate owned 60 per cent stake in the assembly plant while SINOTRUK holds 40 per cent, in a partnership that was formed in 2014.

According to him, the plant is expected to create 3,000 direct employments when fully operational.

Nigeria is a major market for SINOTRUK products, with Dangote Group, operating the largest fleet in Africa, having over 10,000 trucks for the distribution of its products across the continent.
Chiejina said the new company would save Nigeria huge foreign exchange being spent on importation of heavy duty vehicles.

According to him, there will be room for project expansion in future as it meets the national truck demand and will explore exportation to neighbouring countries to generate foreign exchange for the nation.
Chiejina said Aliko Dangote believed that the current economic challenges would make Nigeria stronger if approached positively.

“Alhaji Aliko still believes that Nigeria is one of the best places in the world to do business,’’ he said.
The assembly plant is coming ahead of a $17 billion Dangote Refinery, petrochemical and fertiliser plants also located in Lagos that would have the capacity to produce 650,000 barrels per day when it commences operation.

The refinery is expected to begin operations in 2019.

The refinery, which is expected to create over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs, would require several haulage trucks for product distribution.
Dangote Group imported 12,000 trucks from China in 2014.

SINOTRUK is the largest exporter of trucks in China for 10 consecutive years, securing a sale of 34,000 trucks out of the 176,000 vehicles exported in 2014.

It (SINOTRUK) revenue from overseas sales amounted to 9 billion yuan ($1.45 billion), accounting for about 13 per cent of the total sales.

SINOTRUCK is a Chinese state-owned truck manufacturer, established in 1956, with its headquarters in Jinan, Shandong Province.

The company developed strategic technical partnerships with major international brands such as Steyr in Austria and Mann in Germany, all of which had helped it penetrate key global markets.

If Dangote is sincere enough, i believe he should be paying more attention and interest to rail..

rail is far more cost efficient than plying trucks on our high ways..

it is gross act of irresponsibility to have federal government construct roads with hard earned tax payers money and have dangote alone ply over 10,000 trucks on road built by the government with tax payers money. Dangote is only taking liverage from the poor masses.. these truck are neusances to the roads and hazrds to the roads and in most cases reckless drivers.

Rail would do us more good in haulage instead of road, or better still, dangote can support the federal government initiative to have all federal government roads run on dualised 5 carriage xpress lanes so as to have special dedicated express lane carriers for trucks like we have in developed countries, not to hav trucks competing with vehicles on the tiny one way the government has bee able to provide how many years after independence..

that obajana road is a complete disaster, dangote is supposed to have taken responsibility for that road long before now.. the okene, lokoja road is a mad death trap, kabba-obajana road where all of dangote cements come from are no go areas.

the earlier we deal with ourselves with sincerity, the better for us as a Nation.

Bros, Dangote is NOT the Federal Government of Nigeria, I hope you still understand?
He is doing his business on his own and he pays tax.
If you aren't happy about his investments or your are more sincere, you are FREE TO START YOUR OWN RAIL business.

While trains are important, they still cannot do the job of trucks; trucks can replace trains but trains cannot replace trucks.

So what exactly is the problem here? is it that there are plenty trucks on the roads, or is the problem that a single industrialist owns most of the trucks?.. (I'm sorry but this sounds much like bad-belle).

Dangote pays his taxes to the government like everyone else and due to the enormity of his truck fleet and businesses, I'm sure he would be paying a significantly higher amount of tax than the rest of the road users. After paying his taxes to the government, should he be made again to do the job of successive inept Nigerian governments? I wouldn't think that is fair except we are suggesting he should be punished for being an over-successful industrialist.

we all complain Nigerian roads are bad. have you taken a minute to ask yourself what is the cause of these roads going bad.. you see the roads are too burdened by these heavy duty trucks unlike cars, truck tear and wear the roads more easily and faster if you ask my opinion and talking of road safety.. these trucks at a time were asked to restrict their movement to only night travels but they will never adhere..

the truck drivers are usually very reckless too. the disadvantages far outweighs the advantages put together. capitalist only think what favors them and dams the consequences on anybody else

You want a country with a buoyant economy right?... You want an industrialized Nigeria where unemployment rate is to the barest minimum, where healthcare is superb and even free, where hunger is eliminated and where as a Nigerian, you can hold your head up high and declare your nationality anywhere you go to in the world? If you want any of that for Nigeria, then you cannot wish these FEW trucks we have away from our road.

Just for your info, the problem is not the presence of trucks, the UK for example has hundred times more trucks than Nigeria, and that's in addition to its very robust rail network. The real problem is the absence of roads.

Please what question did you ask?... Trucks are a big problem on our roads but we certainly cannot do without them, not now and not even in the very long term. So what I am yet to understand in your logic is how continuation of truck importation is better than Nigeria manufacturing the trucks it uses. Obviously you seem to be the only one on this thread who is opposed to Nigeria manufacturing its own trucks because you think trucks are bad for roads.

A little piece of info for you, even the most advanced nations with the best rail networks still have heavy trucks all over their roads because the use of large trucks is inevitable in any economy; trucks can replace trains but trains can't replace trucks.

If your point were to be that the government should fix our roads and build rails to ease some of the load from our roads, that would have been an understandable contribution from you, but on this note, no one seems to understand where you are driving at; are you saying Dangote should start fixing Nigerian roads first or are you saying Dangote should invest in building railways for govt?... Trucks are inevitable to Dangote's business, so are you also suggesting that Dangote continues to import the thousands of trucks he uses instead of producing them here in Nigeria?.. How exactly does importing the trucks ease the pressure on our roads?... What exactly are you all about man? undecided

I feel like giving up
Focus man, FOCUS!!!
Keep things in perspective.
Nigeria is NOT a developed nation. We do NOT need the number of trucks they have in the U.K. If the Lagos - Maiduguri rail line is working effectively, many of the Dangote trucks would be taken off the road.
The benefit of this in the short term is we can take the pressure off our existing road network and spend more money building new and bigger roads for when we would actually need a plethora of trucks i.e. when we r actually industrialised, as opposed to spending trillions rehabilitating roads destroyed by these same trucks.
Besides where in the UK do u see heavy trucks within town? They stop on the outskirts, and smaller trucks convey their payload to the shops. Unlike in Nigeria where a truck will block the entire road just to offload a few cartons of milk to a small store.
Heavy Trucks were made for a reason. They work well in some countries. Nigeria is not one of those countries. We have proved that over and over for decades. Right now, the rail and light trucks can handle what the heavy trucks are doing.
I hope this makes sense to SOMEBODY.

The simple point being made which you have failed to realise is that even in societies which have the most robust rail network, the importance of large trucks can never still be overemphasised. Trains cannot deliver the service of trucks, trains cannot replace trucks. I live in the UK, whenever I embark on a journey, the number of trucks on the roads is mind boggling. There is a legislation which prevents most trucks from driving into cities during the day, but that doesn't mean they arent there lurking in the dark.

And yes, just like in Nigeria where trucks block the road to offload goods into stores, that also happens every single day in the UK too; there are thousands of shops (both big and small) which get deliveries several times a day. Only difference in the UK is that the road network is better, so the offloading is done in such a way that it doesnt COMPLETELY block traffic.

You say those are developed nations?... Isn't Nigeria supposed to be a developing nations?.. How do we get developed if we don't embrace industrialisation (which requires numerous trucks)?... Several people here have pointed out to you that even the most developed nations with very robust rail network (an superb roads) still need numerous trucks to get goods to the final destination but you insist on your argument that a Nigeria which doesn't even have a rail network should jettison trucks? undecided

Your argument might have been meaningful if you were calling for the government to fix our bad road networks and also pass legislation to limit the access of trucks into cities or regulate their activities. But your outright denouncing of trucks is clearly throwing the baby away with the bath water and I'm sorry, that is absolutely pointless.
