All Set For FIFA World Cup Draw

The glare of the global football world will be on the Cape Town International Convention Centre at 19h00 next Friday, December 4, when the 32 teams who made it through to Africa’s first Fifa World Cup and their legions of fans find out exactly where they will be playing - and who they will be playing against.

And when the Final Draw is beamed to millions of homes in more than 200 countries next week, a magnificent Draw Hall and stage fit for the magnitude of the occasion stands ready to play host to the dramatic proceedings.

It’s taken 3600 hours of manpower to set up the sprawling Draw Hall and 950 square metres of timber to construct the stunning African-inspired Draw stage – which already stands ready to host the eagerly anticipated event.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa’s Cape Town Venue Manager, Teral Cullen, has been the operational head of the mammoth operation that is the Final Draw – and as the excitement mounts and the event draws nearer, she’s confident things are well in hand.

"Over the last 10 days everyone involved has put in an enormous effort. They’ve really put their noses to the ground and worked flat out, with many late nights and early mornings. The Draw Hall and stage is complete and rehearsals have already started. And with a week to go we’re very confident with our preparations, we’re ahead of schedule and ready for this event," said Cullen.

She added that while the Final Draw is being delivered by a large team of 3 254 people in total, including security personnel, volunteers, event staff, contractors and entertainers, the co-operation between all parties has been outstanding.

"There has been tremendous teamwork and communication between the city and provincial authorities and Fifa and the Organising Committee. There’s been excellent communication in particular between ourselves and Fifa in terms of assessing the requirements for this event and delivering on it. All parties involved sense we’re building something special and we’re set for and working hard to deliver a spectacular event," said Cullen.

To date, 27 of the 32 coaches have confirmed their attendance, including well-known coaches such as Brazil’s Dunga, Portugal’s Carlos Queiroz, England’s Fabio Capello, Italy’s Marcello Lippi, Spain’s Vicente Del Bosque, Nigeria's Shuaibu Amodu and of course South Africa’s Carlos Alberto Parreira have confirmed their attendance for the Final Draw.

Fifa decide seeded teams

Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina and England will join Bafana Bafana as seeded teams for the World Cup Final draw on Friday.

The Fifa Organising Committee also approved the composition of the other pots, as well as the procedure for the final draw:

Pot 2 will be composed of teams from Asia (Australia, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic), North, Central America and the Caribbean (Honduras, Mexico, USA) and Oceania (New Zealand)

Pot 3 will include teams from Africa (Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria) and South America (Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay)

Pot 4 will have the remaining European teams (Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland)

Hosts South Africa will be automatically positioned as A1; the other seeded teams will be drawn into the other groups B-H, but will always be in position “1” of their group

Groups will be drawn from A to H and the positions in the group will be drawn for Pots 2 to 4

Geographical criteria will also be respected, meaning that no two teams from the same confederation will be drawn in the same group (except European teams, where a maximum of two will be in a group).

For example, South Africa cannot play the African teams from Pot 3 and Argentina and Brazil cannot be drawn against the three remaining South American teams.

France and Portugal deserve not be seeded, They cam through the back door. Or should i say the hand ball.

Peope, let me tell you some, watch Serbia. Serbia has a good squad. They cam to SA and humiliated Bafana Bafana with 3 - 0. France almost did not make it to the world cup because of Serbia.

World Cup 2010 draw: England seeded as Portugal and France miss out

Fifa have announced that England will be seeded for Friday’s World Cup draw – with France missing out.
Football’s world governing body revealed the surprise system that would be used with the draw with England bracketed alongside South Africa and six other nations.

In an unprecedented move the system relied solely on the Fifa rankings for October 2009, rather than factoring in previous World Cups. It immediately led to the suspicion that France had been punished for their World Cup 2010 play-off controversy.

The seedings mean that, in the group stages, England will avoid the likes of Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy and Holland who have been included ahead of the French.

However, England could be drawn against France and also Portugal who are the most powerful European nations not to be seeded.

The 32 qualifiers will be assembled into eight groups on Friday in Cape Town when the draw is made for next summer's tournament from 5.45pm.

England are ranked only ninth in the Fifa world rankings, but their impressive qualification campaign has been rewarded.

France’s surprise omission will lead to a debate as to whether Thierry Henry’s handball against the Republic of Ireland had led to a re-think of how the draw would be conducted.

I suppose a worst case scenario will see Nigeria paired against. . .

Pot A - Brazil
Pot B - USA
Pot D - Portugal

Anyway, its time we start to showcase Africa to the rest of the world, not just on the pitch but off it as well. Nice work, SA.
