Travel / South Africa Announces Free Visa For Ghanaians July 10, 2019 by 3609ja: 7:20pm On Jul 10, 2019
South Africa has announced free visa for all categories of Ghanaians travelling to that country.

The decision was announced Wednesday before South Africa’s Parliament by the Home Affairs Minister, Pakishe Aaron Motsoaledi.

No further details, including the implementation date, were provided by the Minister who was presenting his Ministry’s 2019/2020 budget to parliament for approval.

Ghana becomes one of the seven new countries South Africa has added to its list of visa-free countries.

“Today, we wish to announce an addition to our visa – free countries. These are: Qatar, United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Ghana, Sao Tome and Principe,” Mr Motsoaledi announced.

Until the announcement, only Ghanaians on diplomatic and service passports were allowed entry into South Africa without visa.

Ghanaians applying for South African visa were required to pay about 500 cedis as visa fees.

The South African government’s decision to remove the visa requirement is expected to be welcomed by many Ghanaians who have made South Africa their tourism destination on the continent.

Ghana already has visa-free agreement with 13 countries in the world.

These are Barbados, Mauritius, Seychelles Island, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Tanzania, Trinadad and Togabago, Singapore, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Jamaica and Rwanda.

Education / University Of Ghana Ranks Within The 151-200 Band In The Prestigious Times Highe by 3609ja: 10:35am On Jul 09, 2019
University of Ghana has been ranked within the 151 - 200 band on the Times Higher Education (THE) Golden Age University Ranking 2019.

The University of Ghana ranked higher than 63 other universities worldwide that were built in the same period, including peer universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

For example, UG is ranked ahead of 38 Japanese universities, 8 Brazilian universities, 4 universities from Poland, 3 universities each from Czech Republic and the Russian Federation and one each from the United Kingdom, United States, Turkey, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, and France.

This year’s Golden Age table reflects what THE describes as the Golden Age in global higher education, characterized by rapid university expansion and increasing investment in research, features 271 universities, up from 200 last year.

The Golden Age ranking uses the same methodology as the THE World University Rankings to cast a spotlight on the best universities established for more than 50 years, but less than 80 years.

Times Higher Education has since 2004 provided trusted performance data on universities for students and their families, university academics, university leaders, governments and industry with universities measured across their teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

The scores for adjudging University of Ghana were: teaching, 14.5%; Research, 13.5%; Citations, 23.8%; Industry Income, 42.2% and International Outlook, 48.8%.

These scores were based on data obtained on the university as of 2015-2016 academic year on key performance indicators namely: University of Ghana’s publication and citations in Elsevier’s Scopus, number of doctoral degrees awarded by the university, research grants won by UG faculty, international -to -domestic students’ ratio, international -to- domestic academic staff ratio, income from industry and income from school fees.

It is worth mentioning that in computing the university’s final scores, these key performance indicators were normalised against total number of academic and research staff, therefore faculty members who do not make significant contribution to these outputs eats into the University’s total scores on the outputs.

In order to improve the university’s performance in future rankings, it is recommended that efforts are intensified at motivating internal stakeholders to improve their contribution to the outputs used in these rankings.

Crime / ‘show Us This Idiot’: Nigerian Community Wants To Meet Suspect In Kidnapping by 3609ja: 11:13am On Jun 19, 2019
The Nigerian community in Ghana has offered to assist police to find the missing Takoradi girls by speaking to the key suspect, a Nigerian identified as Samuel Udotek Willis.

The Igbo King of the Nigerian Community in Ghana, His Royal Majesty Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu and Leader of the Ghana Chapter of Nigerians in the Diaspora, Ogbonna Kaycey, said Tuesday that many attempts to meet Samuel have been unsuccessful.

Ogbonna Kaycey believes the community “can deal with [the suspect]” who some reports have suggested has led police on a wild goose chase to locate three girls who went missing in the Western Region capital since last year.

“Your Majesty [Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu] has made attempts [to meet criminals said to be Nigerians]. Even in the case of the suspect in Takoradi. There was a time we were so angry in the community; there was a time the guy was tossing the authorities up and down and the community was so angry and people were expressing anger; ‘show us this idiot, let’s deal with him,’” Mr Kaycey said on PM Express, Tuesday evening.

Nigerians are battling negative public perception following the involvement of persons believed to be Nigerians in many high-profile kidnappings and other crimes in Ghana.

Security analysts have also pointed to an influx of Nigerian-style crimes in Ghana in recent times.

For instance, the most crucial case in the wave of kidnappings that have gripped Ghana is the one involving Samuel Udotek Willis, who is being held by Ghana police over his involvement in the suspected kidnapping of the three girls in 2018. The girls are yet to be found.

The police are also on a manhunt for three Nigerians linked to the kidnapping of the Consular-General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana, Nabil Makram Basbous, in April 2019 in Accra who was later rescued by police.

The Police in Kasoa in the Central Region also arrested three Nigerians over the kidnap and murder of a two-year-old boy last April.

At a press conference in April, the Police CID revealed it had arrested a two-man Nigerian gang who have confessed to at least 11 armed robberies, a spree that included raping their victims before bolting with cash worth more than two million cedis.

In the latest episode of kidnapping, National Security operatives engaged the Nigerians in a gun battle before overpowering the suspects holding two Canadian ladies.

However, despite these incidents, Mr Kaycey said on PM Express, a current affairs programme on the Joy News channel on MultiTV that many Nigerians living in Ghana are helping to improve the country’s economy.

“We are law abiding citizens. Engage us,” Ogbonna Kaycey appealed to the media and the police on PM Express.

“I am aware that in other nations when a crime is committed and a foreigner is arrested, he is meant to be identified by his people to confirm that this is a citizen of our country but nothing like that has been done,” he added.

He said this was important because it is very likely that sometimes the criminals might not be a Nigerians, but may be holding themselves up as such only to give them a bad name.

His Royal Majesty Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu also appealed to Nigerians in Ghana to make contact with the leaders of the Nigerian community for recognition and assistance when the need arises.

Foreign Affairs / Nigerian Professor Hatches Plot To ‘tear Up’ Ghana by 3609ja: 10:36pm On Jun 17, 2019
Nigerian Professor at the University of Ghana by name Augustine Nwabara is inciting the Nigerian media and community in Ghana to take up strategies that would destroy the image of Ghana to the world.

In a video gone viral on social media, the Prof in a meet up with some Nigerians in the country implored the Nigerian media to tear in the eyes of the international community through negative reportage.

According to the professor, Nigeria already has a bad image mainly because of how they’ve been branded by others especially by Ghana, so it is time to reciprocate that by coming up with innovative ideas and strategies.

Citing some strategies for their mission to work effectively, the professor said “We’re highly skilled and highly talented and blessed people but many at time we lack strategy, Nigerians tend to lack strategy. You can have good skills, if you don’t know how to let people know it, it is there; dies, like having a factory full of items in the warehouse. If you don’t advertise it remains in the warehouse”.

“They have harassed us a lot, I know that... What I’m saying is we need strategies. I’ll suggest something which the embassy can think about; I know they know which they can do immediately at the Nigerians community. There is bad image for Nigeria; we can take it back through the press. We can reverse it. We have powerful Nigerian media stations, channels broadcast all over the world, there’s active online social media, the plot in Nigeria. Let them come here and run documentaries of the experiences of Nigerians and blast it all over the world. In three days Ghana would respond”.

According to the professor who says he was once a media person and has expertise in how it works, whatever agenda the Nigeria media set will work out positively as people believe every news item that comes from the media is the truth although that is not usually the case.

Advocating the need to extensively utilise this mode, he called on the Nigerian leaders to take advantage of this strategy as it will be the key to destroy the image of Ghana since Nigerians can’t be the only ones to be branded as bad or evil.

“I have been a media person, you cannot be here and suffering. Let the leaders get our media persons come here to cover what has been happening. Go to the student community, go to the business community, go to everywhere; come to the embassy. Go and confront the officials with the information, air it, within one week I can tell you part of worse happening. I’m sorry to say it but this is within us, the present government in Ghana came on the grounds of Nigeria bashing. I’ve listened to things some of their top leaders have said all over the world in major places. We did not take it back, if we take it back they will sit up, so media strategy one”.

“Use their own media; but you know something, I’ve been a pressman, there is no absolute truth in the media. The truth is truth as it is presented. Let us use our own media and get back to them. Let us see life cases, let our media with this story say we want to go to their prisons to see Nigerians, of course, they will turn you back, you broadcast it. And by the time you’re through run series of documentaries on Nigerians relations and sir we’ll take history”, he suggested.

He further revealed that there has been a long-standing rivalry between Ghana and Nigerian dating back to Kwame Nkrumah’s time, which is known by few indicating that it is about time Nigerians let Ghanaians know they are ahead in everything.

“That rivalry has been there because we don’t tell them the truth. They don’t know, historically there is that rivalry. Its sibling rivalry but the truth is that it’s a rivalry between an elder brother and a younger brother. It’s the rivalry all over Africa”.

Advising on how to make it work without being obvious, the professor said “Let’s take back our image, let’s take them on step by step in very subtle forms not frontal, not open”.

Watch the video below to know other strategies the professor came up with to completely destroy the image of Ghana to the international community.

Crime / Nigerian Spare Parts Dealers Attacked At Suame, kumasi by 3609ja: 9:12pm On Jun 17, 2019
A group of unidentified men have forcibly closed down about 20 shops owned and operated by Nigerians at the Suame Magazine in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

The Nigerian traders say they have been targeted, ostensibly for the involvement of Nigerian nationals in the recent alleged kidnappings in Ghana.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association, Chief Kizito Obiora, tells our Ashanti Region correspondent Beatrice Spio-Garbrah that they have been under attack since last Thursday.

He disclosed they have been forced to close their shops since last Friday and all through the weekend, and the perpetrators are demanding that they leave the country to their home Nigeria.

Chief Kizito, who said they have reported the case to the police, wants a quick intervention, noting “Nigerians at Suame Magazine are law-abiding”.

According to him, when the attacks started last week, the police intervened to restore order but added some unidentified young men returned Monday to forcibly lock up their shops.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since commenced investigations into the matter.
Crime / 5 Nigerians Arrested Over Armed Robbery, Rape by 3609ja: 8:50pm On Jun 17, 2019
Five Nigerians who raped a woman in the course of their robbery operation at Community 25 in Tema have been arrested by the Prampram Divisional Police Command.

The suspects were apprehended Friday after being on the police wanted list for some time.

Their modus operandi is attacking mobile money vendors, mostly women in their house with machetes and guns and raping them after taking away their valuables.

Confirming the incident to DGN Online, Chief Superintendent Cecilia Arko, Crime Officer of the Prampram Divisional Police Command, narrated that barely a month ago, four among the five suspects attacked a couple at their residence at about 3:00 am.

According to her, the suspects who were aiming at a mobile money vendor, mistakenly went to the house of the couple and held them hostage before demanding for money and valuables.

For the couple’s inability to provide what they wanted, Chief Superintendent Arko noted one of the suspects angrily sent their female victim to one of the rooms where he removed her underwear and forcibly hard sex with her while his accomplices filmed the odious act with a cell phone.

The Crime Officer indicated that last Thursday, the couple were walking in the neighbourhood when the female victim spotted the suspect who removed his mask before filming the act, adding that she quickly alerted the husband who confronted the suspect on the street.

However, according to her, the suspect decided to take to his heels upon seeing the couple but the male victim managed to raise alarm which attracted neighbours who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police station.

She further said when the suspect was interrogated, he admitted the offence and further led the police to their hideout in the area where his accomplices were also arrested including the gang leader who brought the suspects from Nigeria to Ghana to do criminal activities such as internet fraud and armed robbery.

'Ghana is the future of Africa': Why Google built an AI lab in Accra
Why Ghana?
The question everyone was asking after Jeff Dean (the Google AI and Google Brain team lead) announced that Google AI Lab was coming to Accra was "Why Ghana?"
The answer to that has been clear for a while now but has eluded most people.
When Barack Obama decided to visit Ghana as the first African country during his Presidency, it was the same question most people asked - "Why Ghana?"
The answer is simple; Ghana is the future of Africa.
When I decided to move away from Nigeria to Ghana almost a decade ago, most people could not understand why because they had not visited Ghana, I did and I fell in love, literally.
I married a Fanti woman. I had already fallen for the country before I met my wife because the place was different.
It didn't have the hardcore market edge of places like Nigeria and South Africa, but it was a place where I could live and work.
Ghana has relatively stable electricity, relative security, and decent internet infrastructure. It also has some of the best tourist destinations in the developing world. All of this is present without any hype. I moved our business there and didn't look back ever since.
This choice is in spite of the challenges the country has gone through in recent times. I have remained and will continue to do so.
Record-breaking $560m for African tech startups in 2017, says report
Record-breaking $560m for African tech startups in 2017, says report
Google probably, however, has different reasons for choosing Ghana, and Jeff Dean tried to explain that it had to do with the robust network of academic institutions as well as infrastructure.
Google has been a significant investor in strengthening those institutions and the infrastructure around it.
An Alphabet Subsidiary named CSquared spun out of Google has quietly been laying an extensive fiber optic backbone in Accra and Kampala to help solve the last-mile internet problem that Eric Schmidt mentioned in Barcelona.
The internet speeds I get in the office and at home in Accra are now comparable with California speeds.
How ancient knowledge inspires African tech to flourish

Ghana has also become a melting pot for education in the sub-region over the years because of the relative stability of the country and the high standards of its institutions, such as the highly-regarded Ashesi University.
The foundations of Ghanaian education are about the strongest in the region. It is not uncommon to see people from non-English speaking countries traveling to Ghana to learn English and for their education.
Is virtual reality set to take off in Africa?
Is virtual reality set to take off in Africa?
There is also a steady education pipeline between Nigeria and Ghana, in spite of historical ups and downs between both countries.
Faced with a declining education system in their country, many Nigerian parents are opting to send their children to school in Ghana.
Building African talent is one of Ghana's strongest points, and its central location also makes it a great business hub for those who want to expand to Francophone Africa and Africa's largest market - Nigeria.
The proximity to Nigeria yet relative sanity and organization are the main reasons why I moved.
Lagos is just an hour away.

Wa Airport ready for operations

President John Dramani Mahama is set to inaugurate the Wa Airport in the Upper West Region for the start of commercial operation by end of this month, B&FT sources have revealed.

The airport has undergone extensive renovation including the construction of a suitable terminal building, construction of a new runway, and fencing of the facility to make it suitable and safe for commercial operations.

The Wa airstrip, which was decades ago used for domestic services, had remained unsuitable for domestic flights over a long period now.

Domestic airline operators cited the poor runway, lack of an adequate terminal building and other ancillary facilities for their inability to operate flights from Accra to the Upper West regional capital.

A significant number of the travelling passengers to Tamale do so for onward connections by road to the Upper East and Upper West Regions and Burkina Faso.

The regional capital, Wa, is home to some 224,000 people -- most of whom work with non-governmental organisations operating in the region, and are students of the Wa campus of the University of Development Studies (UDS).

There is a lot of inter-trading activities between the country and its northern neighbour, Burkina Faso. The land-locked country relies on Ghana and other West African countries for its maritime imports, which are carted by land through the Upper West and Upper East Regions to the Burkinabe capital, Ouagadougou.

Growing passenger throughput, increasing number of French-speaking West Africans in Ghana, and the relatively peaceful nature of the country are some of the major lures for airlines in the region.

The domestic transit passenger volumes increased from 14,000 in July 2015 to over 22, 000 in July this year. International passenger throughput also hit 1.6million this year.

With the Ho airport also expected to be operational this year, there is now a growing concern in some quarters about the ability of the only two remaining domestic operators to service all destinations locally.

Starbow currently operate flight between Accra and Tamale, Sunyani, Kumasi and Takoradi; while Africa World Airlines (AWA) operates flights from the domestic terminal of KIA, Accra to Tamale and Kumasi. AWA also started servicing the Accra-Takoradi route today.

Politics / World Bank: Ghana Overtakes Nigeria As Best Place To Do Business In West Africa by 3609ja: 7:13pm On Nov 01, 2016
The World Bank has declared Ghana as now the best country for doing business in West African sub region, beating Nigeria to second position, with Ivory Coast in third position.

In its yearly report on the Ease of Doing Business, the World Bank said it rated 190 countries, which indicate marginal progress in several areas.

According to the rankings, Ghana was ranked as the ninth best place for doing business in Africa after Lesotho and Zambia.

Nigeria was ranked next to Ghana based on what the bank described as factors policies inconsistent with survival of businesses in the country.

However, Nigeria recorded the highest point in the area of commerce, with 14 points out of 70 among 190 countries where it came first over all other countries in the sub region.

As was last year’s ranking, Mauritius once again ranks best in the region, with an overall Doing Business global ranking of 49.

Mauritius performs best in the areas of Protecting Minority Investors and Dealing with Construction Permits, with a rank of 32 and 33 respectively, on those indicators.

Ghana recorded its biggest jump in the area of trading across borders, going up by 13 places to 167 out of the 190 countries ranked.

It also went up by three places to 76 on the resolving insolvency indicator and two places to 122 when it comes to getting access to electricity for businesses. On the global front, Ghana’s performance went up globally by three places to 108 out of 190 countries ranked.

The World Bank rankings assessed countries based on 11 indicators such as starting a business, access to a credit facility, registering a property, access to electricity, paying taxes, protecting minority investors, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency.

Foreign Affairs / Ghana Could Be Africa's Fourth Biggest Oil Producer By 2020 - Report by 3609ja: 10:47am On Sep 24, 2016
Ghana could become the fourth biggest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa by 2020 once two new offshore fields come on stream, to push total output above 240,000 barrels per day (bpd), pan-African bank Ecobank said on Wednesday.

The West African country produces around 103,000 bpd ranking it ninth, far behind leaders Nigeria and Angola, which produce an average of 1.867 million bpd and 1.754 million bpd respectively, said the Ecobank research report.

Ghana’s Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme (TEN) field came on stream in August and is expected to increase output to a peak of around 80,000 bpd.

The Jubilee field, which started producing oil in 2010 and is operated by British oil company Tullow, could bounce back to production of around 115,000 bpd once it solves technical problems with its production vessel.

At the same time, the Sankofa field operated by Italian company ENI is due to open in August 2017 and should produce around 30,000 bpd, while U.S. independent Kosmos Energy plans to connect the Mahogany-Teak-Akasa (MTA) field to the Jubilee oil production ship.

“Based on existing fields and field development plans Ghana crude oil output is estimated to be over 240,000 bpd by 2019. This could potentially make Ghana the fourth largest oil producer in Sub Saharan Africa by 2020,” the report said.

Production costs for Ghana’s oil projects, which are all in deep water, mean that the crude remains viable if global prices fall to $40 per barrel, allowing it to remain attractive to investors in the event of price fluctuations, it said.

Gas from TEN, Sankofa and MTA could eliminate the need for Ghana to import gas from Nigeria through the West African Gas pipeline.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Stella Amoah, said the “ranking places the University of Ghana ahead of its peers in the country, as it has become a force to be reckoned with on the continent and on the global front.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are generated from five pillars, each of which represents a key area of higher education excellence – teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), industry income (knowledge transfer), and international outlook (staff, students and research).

“For a University keen on enhancing internationalization, it is welcome news that the University of Ghana’s strongest pillar was International Outlook where its was ranked in the 5th decile,” she added.

University of Ghana was placed 10th on the African continent in June this year by the Thompson Reuters rankings.

“The continued upward mobility of the University of Ghana in world rankings is an attestation of the University’s quest to become a world-class research intensive university over the next decade,” she said.

‘Background’

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is an annual global performance list that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The rankings use 13 key calibrated performance indicators to provide a comprehensive and balanced comparison of performance by the featured Universities.

Last year, the University of Ghana was named in the list as the leading West African academic institution and the only one from Ghana.

Nairaland / General / Letter From Africa: Ghana Opens Doors To Other Africans by 3609ja: 5:37pm On Mar 14, 2016
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-35773851?SThisFB

In our series of letters from African journalists, Ghanaian writer Elizabeth Ohene reflects on Ghana's decision to remove visa requirements for citizens of all African countries.

After President John Dramani Mahama delivered his State of the Nation address two weeks ago, most of the discussions were on local and internal affairs, and this being an election year in the country, the debates were heated and will continue for a long time.

But hidden somewhere in the speech and lost in all the discussion was a major foreign affairs initiative which slipped by without media reporting or analysis and it seems likely people may have missed this completely.

Ghana's new visa-on-arrival policy for citizens of African Union (AU) member states, to be introduced from July, only came to light after an announcement from the pan-African body.

Nationals from African countries complain loudly about the humiliations they go through to get visas for Europe and the United States but the process for African visas is often just as frustrating.

Anyone who has tried to cross borders on the African continent will have experienced the difficulties with travelling in Africa.

Air fares cost more than anywhere else and few roads or railways connect the countries to each other.

The immigration and police check points turn the journeys into veritable obstacle courses.
We no longer have to go through Europe to fly to each other's countries, but flight connections are so few and so random, you are tempted to resort to the old routes through Europe to go to the country next door.

However, this is nothing compared to the hassle one has to go through to get visas for another African country.

Business people trading in the continent felt frustrated in the past at spending weeks trying to get visas for each country.

They pointed out that once armed with a European Schengen visa, they could travel through many European countries and conduct business without hassle.

Pointless bureaucracies

Unsurprisingly Ecowas, the West African regional body established in 1975 was at the time considered an attractive union due to the introduction of visa-free travel among member states.

Continental organizations like the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), formed to foster cooperation between African states and its successor the African Union (AU), launched in 2002, have few passionate supporters these days in Ghana as they are seen as pointless bureaucracies that have no bearing on the lives of people.

President Mahama's policy could boost AU's significance once again.

African unity was taken very seriously here in Ghana. It was our first President, Kwame Nkrumah, who was the driving force behind the establishment of the OAU back in 1963.

Business / Ghana Suspends Sacking Of Nigerian Traders by 3609ja: 10:26pm On Mar 07, 2016
Nigerian traders interested in operating in Ghana will no longer be required to raise a minimum capital of 300,000 dollars.

This is according to President John Mahama. This comes after the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry tried to eject all foreigners operating in Ghanaian markets in 2014.

This led to the setting up of an inter-agency task force established to enforce the new Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) law 865 which authorizes petty trading as the sole prerogative of Ghanaians.

The task force is made up of representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Registrar General’s Department, Social Security and National Insurance Trust, Ghana Revenue Authority – Domestic Customs and the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

But the new protocol for the issuance of ECOWAS biometric cards entitles ECOWAS citizens to work in any country in the sub-region without any hindrance.

In 2016, ECOWAS citizens will be issued with the regional bloc’s biometric identification card to ensure free movement of persons, and to promote security in the West African sub-region.

“I think that our continued pursuit of greater regional integration is resolving the issue by itself. As you are aware we have agreed on the protocol for the issuance of the ECOWAS biometric cards to all ECOWAS citizens and that ECOWAS biometric card entitles ECOWAS citizens not only to visit but to reside and work in each other’s countries,” President John Mahama said at a Forum during a State visit by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to President Mahama, all attempts to eject Nigerian traders in Ghana automatically have been suspended.

“The card would entitle automatically not only Nigerians but all ECOWAS citizens to the right of abode in Ghana if they decided to do so and that automatically will trigger an amendment of the law that requires the capital of 300,000 dollars,” he stressed.

On Sunday (March 6), Ghana celebrated its 59th year of independence and John Dramani Mahama, the country’s president, came bearing gifts.

During his speech, Mahama announced that the country will begin to offer visas on arrival to citizens of all 54 African Union (AU) member states starting in July.

Ghana’s new visa policy is big news in Africa where, according to the African Development Bank, only 25% of the countries offer visas on arrival to nationals of other African nations. Put another way, it is easier for North Americans to travel within the continent than it is for Africans.

Only the Seychelles is known to have an open access visa policy applicable to citizens of all AU member states. (Ghana currently offers visa free entry for citizens of 15 countries within the Economic Community of West African States.)

As part of his independence day speech, Mahama also advocated more unity across the continent by urging his countrymen to learn French, the official language of more than half of the countries in Africa. English is the official language of Ghana, but it is bordered by francophone countries like Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Togo.

Opening its doors to other African nations could be crucial for Ghana. The travel and tourism industry accounts for 5.9% of its GDP.

Mahama did not say whether the new policy would include business visas, but at a time when foreign direct investment on the continent is falling, the country could benefit from opening its doors.

Business / Ghana Supplies Power To Togo & Parts Of Ivory Coast by 3609ja: 2:54pm On Aug 30, 2011
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has taken the lead in supplying 17 communities in neighbouring Togo with power.

The programme, which is a deal between the ECG and its Togolese counterpart, Communaute Electrique Du Benin (CEB), is under a 2003 agreement under the West African Power Pool (WAPP), project which enjoins countries in the West African region to share power supply to countries in need of the commodity.

The GH¢3.6 million worth deal is partly supported by the European Union with the two companies involved in footing the rest of the bill. Under the project, three Ghanaian communities on the Togolese border are also to benefit from electricity supply for their role as power take-off points in Ghana.

Speaking at the ceremony during which an agreement to that effect was signed in Lome, Togo, the Managing Director of the ECG, Mr Anthony Gyampo, reiterated that the ECG had enough power to supply to households in Ghana and put the country’s power penetration at 70 per cent.

According to him, the difficulty the company faced was distribution challenges.

The WAPP project, which also gave birth to the West African Gas Pipeline project signed by the 16 West African leaders, enjoined participating countries to deliver 2000KW or more of electricity to sister countries.

Under the same project, the Volta River Authority (VRA) is expected to supply a similar amount of electricity to parts of Burkina Faso and the northern parts of Cote d’Ivoire.

The Deputy Director General of Communaute Electrique Du Benin, said the deal would boost socio-economic activity on the borders of both countries.

“He lauded the ECG for playing a key role in being the first to fulfill requirements under the WAPP agreement.
