contestants, Sophia nabbed the top spot and prestigious
prize in the company’s annual Star in a Bra competition.

A sting operation led by the police together with the mounted unit and K9 unit resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old Nigerian man on Wednesday, October 21st. According to Capt. Ntobeng Phalal, the police followed up a tip-off and raided a house in Jorissen Street where they arrested the man and confiscated several stolen items and drugs. 
"The items confiscated during the operation include: rock and CAT to the estimated value of R18 000, few dagga plants, cash, 8 cell phones, printers and a laptop," Provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto said.

There are many things that can harm a marriage: financial stress, unfaithful partner, uncontrolled addictions. All of these things take a considerable amount of effort and time from both partners. But there is one thing that can change the quality of a marriage almost instantly: What you say to each other on a daily basis. If you’d like to avoid arguments or diffuse the start of one, make a conscious effort of omitting these phrases from your conversations.

1. “You always/never…”

Never start a sentence with this phrase no matter how much you may feel it in the moment. It’s a harsh accusation to say to your spouse “you never listen” or “you always work late” because a) it’s not true. b) Most of the time this comment is born in the heat of the moment. A better way of speaking your mind would be taking a deep breath and saying, “Sometimes I don’t feel heard or understood. Do you mind listening for a couple of minutes? It’s really important to me” or, “I’m sure all these extra hours are hard on you. It has been tough on our family, as well. Maybe we can discuss some ways we can have some more family time.”

2. “I hear a new gym just opened up. You should seriously think about signing up. You need it.”

This is basically a slap to the face and implying your dissatisfaction with your spouse’s body. Never say something negative about your sweetheart’s body. Never.

3. “If you really loved me, you would do…”

This sounds like a trap. Essentially, it is communicating that your spouse is selfish if he doesn’t do XYZ. In reality, I feel the opposite is true. The person who is making this request is being selfish as she is not considering the feelings of her partner. What if it’s something your spouse is uncomfortable with? What if it’s not in the budget? Not only that, but this sounds manipulative and one-sided. No one wants to be forced to do anything. When it comes to major decisions that will affect both parties, it’s best if they are mutually decided upon, and not demanded in the name of “love.”

4. “I can’t wait to go to work/for you to go to work.”

I know. Many of us have been here. You’ve had a not so perfect weekend/evening/holiday together, and you feel like distance between you is the answer. A little break from each other to cool tempers and clear minds is good, even healthy. But actually telling your significant other that you would like them to be elsewhere or that you don’t want to be near her is hurtful and devalues her as your partner and parent of your children. Regardless of the argument(s), just rephrase your need for some space. Something like, “I’m sorry we’ve had a rough couple of days together. Maybe we can start again tomorrow.”

5. “You’re such a (insert insulting name).”

This is your spouse. Your confidant. Your sweetheart. Even if you feel the insult is deserved — don’t say it. Take the higher road. Don’t just react in an argument, try to diffuse it with, “I’m sure you didn’t mean that. Let’s talk about this when you are yourself.” Or, “That was hurtful. When you’re ready to talk respectfully, we can discuss this problem together.”

6. “Well, so-and-so’s spouse does that…”

Ouch. Comparing can cause resentment and feelings of inadequacy. I’m reminded of the phrase, “Choose your love, love your choice.” This doesn’t mean you just put up with bad habits. But how you approach your partner makes a world of difference in how safe and valued they feel with you. Here’s another way of communicating your feelings: “You know what makes me feel loved? When you help me do dishes/help the kids with homework/clean up after yourself.”

Marriages are fragile. Let us be more careful and mindful of what, and how, we communicate with our sweethearts. The wrong tone, word choice or angry outburst can do more damage than most of us realize. I like the quote by Family Advocate F. Burton Howard in regards to marriage: “If you want something to last forever, you treat it differently.

Two planes belonging to Arik Air, yesterday, brushed each other while manoeuvring out of the apron at the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

Following the incident, the two planes had their wing tips damaged and have been grounded to allow further investigation into the incident.

Reacting to the incidence, spokesman of the airline, Mr. Adebanji Ola, said in a statement: “Two of our aircraft, Boeing 737-800NG were this afternoon (yesterday) involved in a wing-tip brush at the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

“One of the aircraft, 5N-MJP, was marshalled out of the ramp for a scheduled flight, when its wing brushed that of another aircraft, 5N-MJQ, parked on the ramp.

“There were no incidences as the safety of passengers was not jeopardized. We have grounded the two aircraft and are looking into the incident,” Ola said.

Two residents, Bashirat Rauf, a mother of two
and Sodiq Saka of Araromi Quarters in Ketu,
Lagos State, were both electrocuted when fire
engulfed a school nearby.
Bashirat Rauf was said to have rushed out of her
apartment when she saw fire burning from a
cable in a nearby school.
She reportedly decided to quickly pick her
children who were playing outside in order to
avoid being engulfed by the fire unfortunately,
she got electrocuted in the process.
Meanwhile, 33 year old plank seller,Sodiq Saka,
was said to have gone to fetch water to put off
the fire in the school premises when he saw
flame coming out of their compound and he got
electrocuted in the process.
According to Mr. Saka Imam, The father of late
Sodiq,
“As a Muslim, I have accepted my fate. There is
nothing I could do to bring the dead back to life.
“We were to gather on that fateful day. He was
the one who slaughtered the Sallah ram he
bought for me.
After that, he told me he was coming to get
something down the street, only for someone to
come and call me that my son had been
electrocuted in the neighbourhood.
I was told by some witnesses at the scene of the
incident that my son only went into the
compound of the school premises where it was
burning to assist the owner of the house, only
for him to be electrocuted by the falling cable.
Sodiq was said to had stepped on the naked
cable while trying to put off the fire. What else
do I do, I cannot give birth to a grown up boy
like him.”
The Secretary of Araromi Community
Development Association, Mr.Wahab Awoyemi ,
described the incident as a very sad one for the
residents of Araromi community.
He said:
“It was very sad for us to loose two persons in a
day.The woman was in her apartment that
fateful day preparing meal, when information
got to her that the school near their apartment
was burning.
She rushed out to pick her children who were
playing outside their compound and stepped on
the naked cable. She was electrocuted
immediately.
“We made serious effort to rescue both of them.
We went to Eko distribution company office at
mile 12 to switch off the light.
The person who was supposed to switch off the
power was said not be on duty. But with
providence, they took off the power.
It was after then we were able to remove them
from the burning cable and took them to a
private hospital in the community where they
were later pronounced dead by the medical
doctor of the hospital.”
“Before the ugly incident, we called on Eko
Disco officials to come fix the cable before it
will kill someone in the community. They did
not come until two lives were consumed. We
want government to come to our aid in the
community.

A senior Nigerian army officer and nephew of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti has been jailed for six months for allowing weapons to fall into the hands of Boko Haram Islamists during a deadly attack. Brigadier General Enitan Ransome-Kuti was convicted at a five-member court martial in Abuja on Thursday for “loss of equipment” during the attack in Baga, Borno state, in January. He was also convicted of failure to discharge his duties but he was cleared of a third count of “cowardly behaviour”, his lawyer Femi Falana told AFP. The attack on Baga saw hundreds of Boko Haram fighters overrun and destroy the town and surrounding villages, including a military base. Militants were later seen in a propaganda video picking through the armoury at the base, which was used by troops from Nigeria, Niger and Chad. Falana said Ransome-Kuti had been in custody for six months and should be released for time served but the conviction and sentence had to be confirmed first by a military panel. He said an appeal would be lodged as it was “contradictory” to convict his client of losing equipment but clear him of cowardly behaviour. “Boko Haram outnumbered his men. They had more superior weapons than the unserviceable equipment of the Nigerian Army,” which prompted the withdrawal, Falana added.

During her remarks, Ugendu Uchechi, the child
president applauded the Nigerian police for its
fight against crime.
She however, warned men of the Nigerian police
to desist from bribery and other forms of vices.
Nasiru Oki, the state police commissioner also
expressed delight at the visit of the Children
Government of Nigeria.
Oki urged them to work hard to achieve their
dreams and also tasked parents on good
upbringing of their children.
The event was an initiative of the Children
Government of Nigeria who visited some
military, paramilitary and police formations in
the state.
