#BBN: Nigerians Are Wonderful by TonyeBarcanista(m): 10:58am On Apr 06, 2017
By TonyeBarcanista

Before the start of the now trendy #BigBrotherNigeria and even after its commencement, majority Nigerians criticised the show, calling it distracting, misrepresentation of the Nigeria values, immoral, and economy, and socially unproductive to the lives of individuals and the country as a whole. Some even went ahead to call for the removal of the show from the screen of Nigeria, while a few others demanded sanctions by Nigeria Broadcasting Commission.... But Nigerians are wonderful.

While I share in the position that the show is an aberration to sanity and everything positive, I am also in awe at the "wonderfulness" of Nigerians.

1. OUR PASSION FOR #BBN IS IMMUNE TO RECESSION:
While Nigerians will always point that the country is facing one of it's worst economic challenges since after the civil war, the same Nigerians will brush that aside when it comes to purchasing browsing data to solicit for and vote for their favorite candidates of the #BBN House, while many others spend resources to vote via text message for candidates.

From my my observation, each candidate that is nominated for eviction spend between the range of N150,000 to N500,000 through their relatives and friends to mobilise for votes via text message or Wechat. That figure though ridiculous, is infinitesimal if you factor the cumulative amount spent by millions of fans and watchers that participates in the voting process to save their candidates including monies spent to buy data for campaign on social media.

In the last eviction show alone, #BBN announced that they got a total of 11million votes. Though they didn't give any breakdown, but it is estimated that at least 60%-70% (6.6million - 7.7 million) of the entire vote were through text messages, which money equivalent is roughly N200million to N230 million. How much more when combined with the money equivalent spent on data for voting and campaign just for the last eviction show alone? How much more has been spent cumulatively?

2. THE QUESTION OF OUR ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE:
Ace comedian "I go dye" pledged/donated N1,000,000 to the cause of his preferred candidate in the #BBN house, Efe, others have been donating to the cause of their own candidates, some held rallies. Some are sharing recharge cards, some did customised shirts and other money tasking ventures to draw support for their candidates. The money is not to fund the education of the candidates, it is not to give the candidates to start business or even sponsor their career. It is to basically to solicit for people to give out money to the organisers of the the show, network providers and WeChat, monies that far outweighs the ultimate Prize and expenses spent for the show combined. Worse still, a large percentage of these monies will find their way out of Nigeria to the homeland of the firms concerned including all network providers save Global Communication.

Most painful is the fact that state government like Bayelsa is not left out in this as it erect billboard worth over a million Naira to support the candidate of the governor, who is not even an indigen of the state. This is a government that is yet to fulfil its salary obligation to workers.

Shamefully, majority of these passionate fans will not commit same to empower underprivileged citizens or support productive causes like education, agriculture and other form of empowerment.

When Greece was in financial mess and in need of funds, celebrities and sports superstars like Lindsay Lohan, German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Cristiano Ronaldo and several others chose Mykonos city as destination for 2014 summer holiday in order to help the economy and boost patronage, which was achieved. But our own celebrities?

The organisers of #BBN on the other hand would rather host the show in their home country (South Africa), thereby using the resources of Nigerians to add to the economy of their country.

3. WHERE LIES OUR MUCH TOUTED MORAL/SOCIAL VALUES?
Nigerians are very sanctimonious when it comes to moral and social values, we are very religious but very hypocritical. The #BBN show itself fails moral test, but the housemates display moral bankruptcy. When did Nigerians started endorsing "drunks", sexual infidelity and public display of nudity?

Leading housemates "Tboss", "Bisola" and "Efe" at one time or the other had engaged in despicable acts. While Tboss bore her breast without shame to the cravings of her "fans" and disgusts of people with sanity, Bisola without any iota of remorse gave evicted housemate Tony MouthAction using her mouth to satisfy the cravings of the married man, Efe on his own part drank himself to foolishness and was engaged in a public display of intimacy (kiss) with fellow housemate Marvis. These acts are considered disgraceful to Nigerians and a shame to the family of those involved.

The implication of this is that other Nigerians are encouraged to engage in such with the mindset that they will be celebrated if they should do it in a big stage like #BBN.

4. MISPLACED PRIORITIES:
in every election in America, citizens contribute their resources irrespective of how little to ensure that their choice candidate that is answerable to them emerges as party candidates and eventual winner. This is the norm for every election at all levels. In fact, according to USA official statistics, 13% of common American citizens donated to political campaigns, this is apart from donations from wealthy Americans, trade/student/professional Unions, PACs and firms.

In South Africa where the #BBN is hosted, citizens donate to the campaign of parties and candidates of choice in the tune of hundreds of millions of rands. Like the Americans, they do it to have control over political establishment and government leaders. Hence, if an official misbehaves, they call for his ouster and they usually have their way. They know that all aspect of their lives is tied to political leadership of the country, which motivates their financial participation.

In my dear country Nigeria, our citizens don't reason that way. We rather collect from politicians that are seeking power, thereby making us slaves to the leaders and putting us at their mercies.

Ironically, we won't think twice to buy fuel for our generator to watch shows like #BBN, donate to solicit votes for our candidates in the #BBN show, spend resources to campaign online and offline for our candidates in #BBN and vote for the said candidates.

I believe that the fortunes of our country would have greatly improved if we commit half of such energy and resources to install political leaders of our choice.

We always beat our chests that we are very intelligent but I think reverse is the case. One thing is for sure, Nigerians are "wonderful" people.

May God Bless Us All And Bless Nigeria

If you don't like the show you know what to do. Your epistle won't stop enthusiasts from watching rather increases the publicity.

This post of yours shows you've been following the show from inception and will keep till the end. If you despise it so much you wouldn't care and would have opt out from the first episode you watched.

Just like posterity will judge you for spreading half truth and deceiving those who are non the wiser.

I'll say this again, Tonye, you of all people is in no position to say what is right, moral or otherwise, cos I know your thirst for political prostitution, just like that of Atiku and FFK, knows no bound.

You're just like sand, you go wherever the wind takes you, and that wind is whoever pay you starvation wages for you to quench your lust for political prostitution.

Darn! Here I was, after reading his original post, thinking,' Joe would have a field day battering the author who's infamous for being two-faced' and who was the second person to register his presence on the thread? You! cheesy

He raised valid points; maybe he's as guilty as those he's trying to castigate or he's just compulsively megalomaniac but he's right. Let's focus on the message, not the messenger.

In other for one to criticise a thing, one must know about that thing, study it and observe it to the fullest. Why do you hear people say "in other to catch a thief, you have to be a thief".

Sad truth, we are indeed very "wonderful" people

This is same country with people dying of hunger in idp camps, people need money for one life saving medical care or the other, but yet we can "donate" 330 million naira for some people to be showing boobs. Smh

The best way of handling trolls is to ignore them. They will either get bored and tired or they will continue to persevere for attention. One thing is certain, the more they keep trolling, the more they display their stupidity. Personally, I don't dignify them with response...

Indeed my good friend, he raised valid points, but still, I've always believed the messenger should be as good as the message he's trying to spread.

Imagine a pastor saying "fornication is a sin" and he's caught red handed with his penis_ inside a well lubricated vagina? That is, a vagina he's not married to.

Now what do you call such a pastor? grin

If you have a brain, that is a well functioning one, you'd know what's up. Here you're talking about 'thinking' when we both know it's the hardest thing for one such as you to do.

Now piss off before I scalp you!.

Troll? Believe me, if I troll you, you'd know you're being trolled.

The day I get bored of exposing your lying and deceiving ass is the day I will deactivate this moniker.

Anybody who knows you know you're always for sale. Tell me, how many political parties have you decamped to? Let's start from there let's know if your hands aren't as dirty like a person who use mud to bath.
