Those routes you are talking about, Sir, are people's ancestral land, given to them by their ancestors to pass unto the next generation. This will not work. Fearless activists like Fayose (Omoluabi), Fani Kayode (Jagun), Apostle Suleiman (A Man Of God), Wike (Dike Ndi Igbo) and other fearless Southerners will oppose this. Nigerians who wish to see the herdsmen become international businessmen as they should be will oppose this.

Commercial cattle ranching remains the only answer. Cattle business is not politics and should not be politicized.

You started with a "plausible" arguement....then you got into the bolded and you messed it up

Never heard of any in the south especially south east and south south... people's ancestral lands. Why arent they also allocating farming reserves, trading reserves, fishing reserves... foolish people thinking they are smart.

Informed commentary is dead. Welcome to a country where demagogues polute the cyberspace and inflict every one with their bombastic ignorance.
There have been grazing routes, demarcated and gazetted since 1961, but by northern Nigerian government.
It is this grazing route that is being reactivated and re energised. There have never been any grazing route in Nnsukka, Aguleri, Auchi or Ogbomosho so none to be re activated.
Even the examples given ; Bauchi and plateau have always had grazing routes which are currently being encroached upon.
If you don't want grazing routes in Benue,Kogi, Taraba, Plateau or Gombe?
Go to your state house of assembly and repeal the existing law.
If you have no prior existing grazing route in your state, be on the watch out for your state Governor to avoid your ancestral land gifted for cattle marching.
Buhari/ FG have no such sweeping powers.

Why not in the north alone.

niger state governor said one time that niger state has land mass of entire southwest region.

Likewise many states in the north have very big land mass.

So exactly what else are they looking for in other regions?
Very important question... arable land is wasting up north, but they want their cattle to go on tourism to the atlantic

According to him, the new plans will prevent people, particularly farmers, from encroaching into stock routes, grazing areas and selling those areas that have been mapped out as graving reserves since 1962.

I find this utterly vexatious! Do people and farmers encroach on cattle routes or it's the other way around?

Now the Buhari administration is even worse than Jonathan's " corrupt" administration.

A devilish, dishonest and totally self-serving Government bent on protecting the interests of blood-thirsty-sipping Fulanis at the expense of every other Nigerian.

Tinubu must be feeling like Judas now selling his children for an imaginary power game.

The Federal Government says that it will demarcate 6,000km cattle routes across the country in 2017.

Alhaji Mahmud Bello, the National Coordinator, Grazing Stock Routes, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Mararaba Dajin, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Bello said: “We are going to provide 6,000 kilometres of cattle routes across the country; we are going to open the primary routes first, while the state and local governments are expected to launch the secondary routes.

“By the time we identify the primary stock routes, being frequently used, we will develop them.
“All the same, all the states may not have an equal share of the routes; Bauchi may have 200 kilometres and Plateau may have 50 kilometres but we are going to spread it.”

Bello said that the cattle routes were aimed at boosting livestock production, adding that crop farming had benefited a lot from the agricultural policies of the previous administrations.

He said that the ministry would also improve the genetic resources of the indigenous cow, which was currently producing 1.5 litres of milk per day, to enable it to produce 25 litres of milk per day.

According to him, the new plans will prevent people, particularly farmers, from encroaching into stock routes, grazing areas and selling those areas that have been mapped out as graving reserves since 1962.
Bello said that dams, boreholes, grazing reserves, stock routes and other facilities, which the government had earlier provided for the pastoralists, would be handed over to them for optimal utilisation.

He noted that such facilities were hitherto abandoned by herdsmen who decided to migrate to other areas, thereby resulting in their clashes with farmers.
He said: “This time around, the Federal Government will strive to hand over all the facilities to the pastoralists so as to enable them to take care of them.

“Besides, we are going to develop 50 hectares of land as pasture development centres for seed multiplication in all the grazing reserves in the country.

“The centres will serve as seed banks for commercial pasture production, as part of the goals of the proposed youth empowerment programme.”

Bello recalled that the Federal Government had, in 2016, requested state governments to provide 5,000 hectares of land within their grazing reserves for commercial pasture production.

He said that when the pasture development project was executed, it would encourage pastoralists, who were migrating in search of pasture and water for their animals, to settle down in one place.

He said that in 2016, the ministry carried out a public sensitisation campaign on the programme in 10 states, adding that it was currently carrying out the campaign in five other states.

So, this administration finally has something positive to say about its predecessor.

If you read the last paragraphs of the news link, the man said they carried out sensitisation in 10 states last year and 5 more states are to follow. Well, the North has 19 states and perhaps 15 of those 19 have been penciled for the routes and reserves. I hope no one is including our Yorubaland in this bloody exercise?! The end of Nigeria is at hand!

bubu and his fulani cohorts are seriously trying via govt policies to force it down ppl throats to part with their ancestral lands to them for their sinister plot of territorial expansionism and of cheap rearing of cows.they don't want to invest money in ranching but want to make all the profits accruable to cattle business. this explains the increasing spate of fulani herdsmen murderous adventures and killing of farmers in the south and the continued deliberate inaction of federal govt.

for God' sake this is a very profitable business that worths all the investments it deserves. why can they adopt the modern practice of ranching which is what is obtainable globally? Brazil is the world biggest supplier of cattle meat with about 206m cattle more than nigeria yet they are not herded. Infact Igbos should invest heavily in the cattle husbandry through ranching system to dislocate this illiterate and barbaric fulani herdmen from our lands. when we start supplying Alaigbo the required quantity of cattle meats, this dirty pigs will find else where to hurl their dirty ass cattle.

Why must we continue the archaic form of cattle rearing by roaming the nation and destroying other peoples' source of livelihood under the guise of grazing? How come that FGN couldn't sit people down and encourage them on building ranches?

6000KM of land! Whose land? And someone is talking about 1962. Poor creativity and lack of willingness to change only postpones the evil day when some Nigerians will determine that enough is enough!
Re: FG To Demarcate Cattle Routes Nationwide by k9ine(m): 8:24pm On Apr 09, 2017
Some of these governors are heartless.
They would covertly permit the FG marking out peoples ancestral lands in their state, and tell you that "we have to live as one".
Inform your brothers, lawyers, surveyors, community chiefs and everyone to open their eyes, else some lilly- livered governors will lett let this happen.
Then in no distant future, they would gave the places Fulani names, demand emirates, demand new wards, demand Shariah legal system in these state, set up an arms storage etc. Then one peaceful Easter morning, they would open the floodgates of hell and war upon you, conquering you with ease.

Open Your Eyes People!

Southerners are not wise because of politics of selfishness, greed & looting of the national treasury our leaders keep eating with the common enemies by selling their subject who themselves are also foolish but fire shall consume them all (they the elites )
how difficult it is for nigerians to know that their political leaders don't care about them is still a misery to me

It is becoming clearer that they want to set up Emirates in all states, using grazing reserves as disguise. After achieving this, compulsory Islamization will be a walkover. Nigerians be warned.

It is a welcomed development, some ppl forget that these Fulanis are also Nigerians with constitutional rights to settle and ply their trade anywhere in the country.

They also do not appreciate the fact that majority of the cattle routes use to be free range virgin lands used by the Fulanis for many years, which in effect preceded most of the farms now in contention with them.

In short, the Fulanis were there before most of the present day farms; it is the farms are actually new arrivals taking over the traditional grazing grounds of the herdsmen.

The British colonialists recognised the potential of future conflict between farmers and the herdsmen and therefore demarcated such routes for the Fulanis.

Unfortunately, over the years corruption and lack strong visible spoke persons for the Fulanis had allowed for the gradual take over of large chunks of these grazing routes, against an increase population of both pastoralists and cattle - making such conflicts inevitable.

Restoration of some of these lost grazing routes by the FG would no doubt go along way towards easing tensions and therefore minimising conflicts between farmers and the herdsmen.

You are joking, right? The South knows the ethnic groups that have been here for 1000 years before the formation of Nigeria. Yorubas, Igbos, Benins and other ethnic groups have been inhabiting the South hundreds of years before the first 'grazing route' was 'created'. Historical revisionism is another stratagem that won't work here. In fact, this latest plan has already failed the same way the grazing reserve bill failed.

Thank God for culture- no one can come and tell the Yorubas, Igbos Benins and other Southern groups about their history.
