One item likely to set pulses racing at an auction today is an ivory-clad Victorian intimacy gadget, an antique from a wealthy Anglo-Irish family.

The historical period may not be widely known for its relaxed attitude to intercourse but they were actually invented by Victorian doctors at the time as a way of curing 'hysterical' women.

And this hand-carved design, made of ivory, is thought to have been createdby a husband for his wife in the 1840s, complete with a hidden receptacle where she could keep a lock of his hair.

This ivory piece is expected to be sold for between €500-€800 at Matthews auctioneers in County Meath, Ireland.

It is described in the brochure as an 'antique, carved ivory ladies companionin scarlet lined leather upholstered carry box with inset bevelled glass panel'.

The piece has been carved to show folds of skin and has a heart carved at the base where the woman's finger would have been in place.

It even has a hollowed-out area where she could keep a lock of her lover's hair.

Saw a documentary where if a person died, someone had to keep watch over the body for days, to make sure that the person was truly dead. They even took family pictures with the dead! They took it even further, by attaching a bell to the hands of the dead, just in case they weren't really dead-the bell would ring if the person moved in the grave.
