Kara
“Baby,you have to eat your breakfast.”
“No,after.” He replied crying. A part of me wanted to spank him while the other part urged me to calm down.
“Honey mum has somewhere to be so swallow up this instant.”
“I want gramma.” He still didn’t know how to pronounce grandma well.
“Kara,take it easy with him.”She grabbed the spoon from my hand. “Here baby.” She put him on her laps and fed him. He ate quietly and quickly.
“You just have to deal with him carefully Kara. He’s only three.”
“I know mum. I’m just trying to get him ready on time. Today is Eric’s turn to drop him at school and I have lectures this morning plus I have a really bad feeling about today. That’s what’s getting me so worked up.”
“Nothing bad is going to happen today Kara. If you’re still not comfortable, pray about it.” She returned her attention to Tristan “Are you okay baby?”
“Yes gramma. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome dear.” She replied.
He came to me and stretched out his hands,signaling me to carry him and I did.
“I’m sorry baby.”
“I love you mummy.”He wrapped his little arms round my neck.
“I love you more sweet darling.”
“No,me more.”
“Mummy’s love won last time remember?”
“No,me.” We went on and on till I let him win. Mum went to the kitchen.
The bad feeling came again. It felt like I should never let him go from the hug. He released me and I stared at his handsome face. His very dark eyes like mine,cute small nose and ears. His hair was still very soft and curly. I don’t know where he got that one from. My hair was soft but definitely not curly while Eric had terribly stubborn hair. My son had a girlish face. I remember people calling him baby girl many times when he was younger. I had to correct the impression severally. He hugged me again. I was backing the door so I didn’t see when Eric stepped in.
“Daddy!” He quickly let himself down from my arms and ran to his father.
“Hey champ.”
“Tristan,what do you say to daddy first?” I asked.
“Good morning daddy.”
“Good morning son.” He lifted him off the ground and threw him in the air.
“Careful.” I warned.
“Good morning caring mum.”
“Good morning Eric. You’re a bit late today.”
“Yeah. I slept in.”
“If all of us “sleep in” like you what would happen?”
“Oh Eric,you’re here.” Mum came out of the kitchen with Tristan’s lunch pack.
“Good morning ma.”
“Good morning dear. You guys better run along so you won’t be late. Tristan come give grandma a hug.”
He ran to her and they prayed for his journey to and from school as they always did everyday.
“I love you darling. Be a good boy and don’t make Mrs. Johnson mad okay?” I said to him when he came to me for a hug.
“Yes mummy. I love you.” He ran to meet Eric who was holding his bag and lunch pack.
As they stepped out of the house,he ran back in and pecked me on the cheek. I picked him up in my hands to Eric’s car outside.
“Bye baby.” I waved till the car drove out of sight.
“Kara,are you okay?”
“Yes mum. I’ll be leaving now.” I dashed in,picked my bag and dashed out again.

“Alright I’m not laughing again but you should be more careful next time.”
“It wasn’t my fault . I was walking on my own and he had to splash water,dirty water to be precise on my white skirt. That’s evil. He couldn’t even stop to say sorry. Thank God I was still on my street so I rushed back home to change.”
“Ok,I’m telling you sorry on his behalf. How’s Lagos this morning?”
“I can’t just wait for service to be over. Lagos is just being Lagos.”
“Okay ma. I’ll call you back. I have a meetin in about five minutes from now.”
“Alright. I love you.”
“Love you too princess. I hope you haven’t misplaced my ring sha.”
“The ring that I sold yesterday?” I cut the call. Before I dropped the phone,he called back again.
“Mille,did I hear you well?”
“Take a chill pill jor. Your ring is safe and secure on my finger. Have a nice day love.”
“You’re just…”
I cut him off with my laughter.
“But I still love you. Bye darlin’.”
“Madam, if you’re done with your man you might as well stand up and let’s get going.” Esther,my fellow corper said to me. We met at orientation camp and bonded almost immediately. We got posted to the same place and we lived together. A strong Yoruba girl who could speak Igbo fluently because she schooled in Enugu.
“Where are we going?”
“Director’s office,have you forgotten that today is his birthday? Let’s go jare before they finish sharing everything.”
“Na food you sabi,yeye girl.” I got up from my seat and followed her out.

“Elliot,this nonsense is so unfair to Jane. How can you be so absent from her life?”
“Mum,I’m here.”
“But you’ll soon leave again. What type of father are you?”
“I’m trying my best mum.”
“Well,it’s not enough. If Natasha was still alive would you be behaving like this?”
“No mum and that’s the point. Natasha is gone and Jane is her carbon copy. She reminds me of her every minute I spend with her.”
“I know how you feel but try to be here for your daughter. I’m the only one who stays with her. Your brother barely comes home early and when he does,he has to act like you because she doesn’t know the difference between you two.”
“I’ll try mum. I need to rest now.”
“How long are you staying?”
“I should be here for two weeks. That’s how long my leave lasts.”
“Make good use of that time. She’s coming back from school by 1 pm.” I left his room.
I was beginning to reason with Jathniel. Elliot was hiding something from us and I would uncover his secret soon.
