Normally, I will be against all manner of government-mandated price fixing but it looks like the government here is trying to curtail price fixing by a cartel. If the government can pull it off, that will be excellent.

Does the Union own the market spots? How exactly can they seize them from non unionized seller?
They do dictate who sells in the market

Our political leaders are just plainly stupid.

For how long to we use force to stabilize prices of goods and services rather than allowing the law of demand and supply to control the market since we are are capitalist and not socialist economy.

If the prices of food stuffs are reduced what bout the prices of inputs and raw materials?

Didn't read were it stated that the union are preventing it? The only that law can work is were the union is checked or eliminated

specter:

Various state government can also consider this, e.g sending lorry loads to the source of production and flooding their local market with it, in order to forcefully crash the price. But that will come and bit them during election and it's kinda dictatorial. I believe with this threat and eventual disbanding will make things right. The middle men are the problem. They buy very cheap from the farmers cos farmers are prohibited from selling directly to the consumers, and then control their prices like our electricity distribution companies.

Threats and bans are just temporal, just make them irrelevant.

What is required is a sustainable agric policy, it will cut the power of both middlemen and unions.

- Govt partner with private firm to run farm settlements in their states
- Govt have reserves and farm settlements supplies the reserves
- Govt will have contract with small scale famers to supply products not available in farm settlement
- Govt partner with private coys to create processing factories that can add value along the chain
- Middlemen are cut off since these farmers have the option of selling directly to govt reserves or sell directly to processing factories at a fixed price. Example is the Dangote Tomato Paste factory sited in Kano beside farmers.
- Any price increase by middlemen can be cut off with supply from reserves and vice versa for excess supply.

Shouldn't government establish commercial farms in parts of the state for cultivation and production of cassava for garri, etc, rice, assorted fruit plants and other basic food crops, than sit in air conditioned offices to issue ultimatum? For decades now, it is Cross River State that has been feeding Akwa Ibom with garri. a staple food of Akwa Ibom people. Its bad.

Nigerians are so exploitative....

Dollar instability has made even farmers increase the price of maize.

Imagine that!!!

Yes, that makes sense. If they don't increase the price of their maize, they would not be able to afford other commodities they depend on that the dollar hike has affected.
You don't expect them to keep the price of maize unchanged when the price of other commodities (affected by the dollar rise) they buy have risen. It will be foolish and suicidal.
The scarcity of foreign exchange, coupled with the reckless CBN ban on some commodities from accessing the foreign exchange window could not have led to anything else but a general inflation. That's how the economy works.

This is the height of insanity on the part of the government. You cannot control prices of item you do not produce. I hope they would tell Policemen to stop collecting "egunje" from transporters and disarm herdsmen from disrupting farming activities. I feel most times that those in government are under some kind of spell with the way to talk

take out time to plant maize and see how it works. What assistance has the government provide for farmers? All you hear is government is going to, government plans to, and you expect the farmer to produce with his sweat and sell it for pittance? I own a farm and i know what is cost to manage it.....farm produce can come cheap under the present circumstances.

I'm about to do just that
only a mumu will still be a govt he has no stake in.de r not talking about farmers but traders

I'm sure you didn't read the post for commenting. The farmer already sold for 18k and the unions want to force everyone to buy for 30k .

May be you did not understand the situation in the state. The market unions don't even allow traders who want to sell their goods at cheaper rate to sell at all. The unions determine the prices and force all members to abide by it, and if you are not a member you wont be allowed to sell in the markets.
