durentchigozie:Engineers are not Technologists, Technicians or Artisans. We design, construct and maintain structures using scientific principles. Seems the OP got frustrated with his course of study cos he couldn't secure an engineering course 1 Like |

The person that created this thread (OP) is a loser. He probably had looked for admission many years in d field of Engineering or had got an encounter with an Engr who boost and loves his profession and wat d course has turned him into positively. That u graduated as a doctor doesn't mean u can now go ahead, open someone's stomach and fix it. No, u hv to attach to another bigger/more experienced Doctor for years, watching him, learning more and perfecting. #As for me, I am a practising Engr, learnt more (skills) after graduating & I am contributing in my own little way to my country. Don't be envious of Us. Try 2 b d best in ur own discipline and help build your Country! 7 Likes 1 Share |

femi4:How can you construct when you have no practical knowledge. You claim that you are meant to supervise technologists, technicians and artisans when you cannot even recognise what you designed when you see it in real life. What the op pointed out is exactly why we cant boast of common 5000 Megawatts of electricit9y after spending more than 30 billion dollars in 18 years. Imagine a situation where a power plant have been under construction for more than 10 years but still uncompleted. Engineers my nyash. |

durentchigozie: Oga chemical engineers do the same,as a matter of fact companies prefer to hire chemical engineers than to employ someone that studied chemistry, moreover chemical engineers were also thought how to make paints in school( that does not mean we dont have people that learnt how to do the paint without going to school ) so say something new. |

Ikennablue: Classroom education is so overrated.....craftsmanship isn't what you gain by reading books but by getting things done. I started doing these things before I left primary school regardless of the fact that I didn't receive ANY FORMAL TRAINING whatsoever. I always had interest in seeing stuffs get done...from watching and helping my dad's mechanic fix his danfo that year, to ruining electrical appliances and finding means to fix it so folks don't know when they got back, to servicing our I better pass my neighbor generator, making model cars and toys....the list goes on jare. I reall that year when I was hustling for Uni admission, I thought it'd be way better to go for poly cos I would have the opportunity to do loads of practical but na big lie o....I still have my workshop overall in perfect shape till tomorrow. I repeat, CLASSROOM EDUCATION IS OVERRATED!!! |

although the angle from which the op addressed the topic is a bit flawed, still he has a point. our education system is stuck in the early 90s. no major improvement.. u have to move abroad to really understand and explore your potential .... most Nigerian students are very eager but the system has a way of frustrating you... modelling, designing , programming, troubleshooting are lacking in our education system. most uni engineering workshops have been are very terrible.no invention can come out of that and there are very few lecturers who are interested in exploring new possibilities. I get upset when I see Lebanese and other developing nations citizens heading most projects here. not that we can't do it , but mehn the system is bad. a 14yrs old Indian boy taught me how to program ics and some other computer electronic stuff over the net. most Naija grads can't do that . cos this are really awkward here. lots of great potential wasting away in Naija. u can argue all u want.. ancient theory is what we are still very good at in Naija.... 1 Like |

ilevic:And you think that he needed a degree in mechanical engineering to learn how to fix a generator? What is the essence of establishing technical colleges? Every engineer who passed through a technical college could fix a generator or wire a house. Those things are learnt in technical schools. The curriculum of engineering studies is designed in such a way that you do not need a basic technical education to gain admission into the university. The training of engineers will encompass those technical knowledge but one would need to practise in the field to entrench those knowledge. So your friend who went to learn how to fix a generator is doing what is expected of him, maybe he didn't have enough practice time during his days in the university, perhaps he couldn't get placement in a relevant industry. Please learn to ask questions politely on issues to lack knowledge on. peace |
Re: What Exactly Are We University Engineering Students Doing In School? by obyrich(m): 2:03pm On Jun 16, 2017 |
durentchigozie:Your questions have been sufficiently answered with addition of superfluous information only that your bigotry has prevented you from learning. There is a wide chasm of difference in curriculum content between engineering studies and technical skill acquisition. An aeronautical engineer will not be an expert pilot. It is only in a dense country like Nigeria that a governor who is not properly certified will jump into the cockpit of plane and finish his career! My dad retired from JB as a supervisor in the pre stressing department. He was a skilled fitter with only standard 6 certificate. He was never called an engineer. There were German engineers whom he reported to. Those engineers were more knowledgable than him but he was more skilled than them. Repetitive practice improves skill. I read where you boasted of using your chemistry skill to open a paint making company. While I would like to encourage your entrepreneurial acumen, I would like to remind you that you don't need a degree in chemistry to make paint. There are soap and paint making skill acquisition centres everywhere. I know many unlettered painters who execute painting jobs with the paints they produce themselves. That does not mean they are the best. A chemist who understudies them, will come up with a more standard product. That's why paint manufacturing companies still employ graduate chemists. 1 Like |

durentchigozie: I understand that we are all entitled to our opinions, but I'd advice you think deeply abut what you come online to post because what you have up there belittles your reasoning as a person and as a graduate. So any Engineer that can wire a house or fix a car is a good engineer? Sit down, let me educate you. Get a dictionary or use the internet. You really need to sharpen your mind as it appears dusty and obsolete. 21st century cars have certified service stations with certified personnel, you may loose your warranty if you do ITK. 21st century buildings need a first-class contracting and consulting team to wire a house. If you had been following the news, you'd have heard about the Grenfell Tower London fire accident. Over 17 people dead and a building running into millions of dollars destroyed because of a faulty fridge. Perhaps the owner was Nigeria and was trying to use his backward Nigerian sense to repair a machine he was never trained to handle. Mechanical and Electrical Engineering has over 20 specializations. You can't be a master of all. You pick your specialty or interest and you perfect your knowledge in that area. So not every MIT Mechanical Engineering Graduate will be able to name all the parts of a car, more so repair it. It's common sense. I really hope I was able to make a point and you were able to pick a lesson or two. 3 Likes 1 Share |
