Amnesty report describes atrocities including torture and rape, a People 'burned to death in homes' by South Sudan's government militias s advisers urge UN to protect civilians in ‘treacherous killing fields’

The government of South Sudan and its militias are behaving with vicious brutality in the country, with reports of men being locked in huts and burned to death, and of machete attacks being carried out in remote villages.
The atrocities are just one of the causes of the major refugee crisis in the region, with almost a million people fleeing to Uganda . Out of a population of some 12.5 million, more than 1.7 million are enduring severe hunger , classified as just one step below famine, and the number at risk of starvation is 6 million and growing. On top of that, a fast-spreading cholera outbreak threatens to kill thousands. The human rights group Amnesty International, which has been gathering together reports from the conflict, said forces – those loyal to the government and also some to the opposition – had also cut food supplies to parts of the country.

Women and girls are increasingly being abducted and raped in the region of Equatoria, a new frontline in the conflict, which is now a region of “treacherous killing fields”, according to Amnesty.
“The escalation of fighting in the Equatoria region has led to increased brutality against civilians. Men, women and children have been shot, hacked to death with machetes and burned alive in their homes. Women and girls have been gang-raped and abducted,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International’s senior crisis response adviser.
Joanne Mariner, another crisis response adviser for Amnesty, said: “It is a cruel tragedy of this war that South Sudan’s breadbasket – a region that a year ago could feed millions – has turned into treacherous killing fields that have forced close to a million to flee in search of safety.”
After more than half a century of struggle, South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011.
The celebrations that marked the birth of the world’s newest country were emotional, but two years later, a falling-out between the country’s president, Salva Kiir, and his then vice-president, Riek Machar, sparked new conflict . Kiir is Dinka and Machar Nuer, two dominant ethnic groups in South Sudan that have been rivals for more than a century, and although Machar, now leader of the opposition, fled the country after a peace deal collapsed last year, troops loyal to him continue to fight the government.
The only way for women and girls to be safe is to be dead
Mary, 23, rape survivor
The report describes one incident in May, in which six men were killed: soldiers forced them into a hut in Kudupi village near the Ugandan border and set it on fire, then fired shots into it. The troops shot four of the men as they tried to flee. Another six were killed in a similar attack in Payawa village two days later, which one of their widows said was “the fifth time the village was attacked by the army”. On previous occasions, she said, they would rape, torture and loot, but not kill. Eyewitnesses described seeing government soldiers carry out many such killings.
“All parties to the conflict must rein in their fighters and immediately cease targeting civilians, who are protected under the laws of war,” said Mariner. “Those on all sides responsible for atrocities must be brought to justice. Meanwhile, UN peacekeepers must live up to their mandate to protect civilians from this ongoing onslaught.”
East African leaders said last month they would try to push for peace talks to be revived and to delay next year’s scheduled elections.
“There is no way to be safe so long as we are alive, this is how bad it is,” one 23-year-old rape survivor, Mary, told the human rights group. “The only way for women and girls to be safe is to be dead.”

These senseless killings are condemnable in the strongest of terms!
May be they should consider dividing the Southern Sudan as well, if peace will reign, or merge it back together if that will stop the killings.
And do I have to call the Mods attention on this topic giving how Nigeria is heading for division as well, at least we can learn to avoid their mistake.

This is the future of Biafra if they secede.

south sudan and Biafra are similar, same religion same dressing code,

south sudan sees themselves as victims of marginalization from Sudan, just like Biafra makes themselves to believe that they are also victims of marginalization from Nigeria.

Exactly, biafrans who are hoping that usa or other members of the international community will come to their aid should learn from the predicaments of south sudan. They should stop deluding themselves and heating up the polity.

South Sudan is a Christian country which secceded from its Muslim counterpart, Sudan. Now Sudan is living peacefully while South Sudan is living in pieces.

I think Igbos are more violent and more inclined to crime than those their Christian brothers in South Sudan.

I don't think Biafra would ever know peace after the seccession, they will eat themselves raw, keep this on record please.

1. They are both Christians

2. They are both greedy

3.They both believe that they are being marginalized in their former country, Sudan.

However, South Sudan is a little more endowed than Biafra because while the former has oil in their country, the latter has abundant armed robbers, kidnappers and drug pushers. This is enough evidence to show you what the future of that place called Biafra would be.

Ignorant statements. South Sudan is like Nigeria!! They have over 60 ethnic groups. SIXTY (60) separate ethnic groups with different interest and had always been a zone known for conflict. You think the conflict there started today
Biafra is a homogeneous nation and even if any other ethnic group would join, they would be a "sister" ethnic group with prior good relationship with the Igbos.

Igbos don't maintain good relationships even among members of the same household...

Just go to any market and you'll see one Igbo trader whispering to your ears that you should not buy things from his brother with whom he sits and laughs, describing him as a bad person who sells fake products at exorbitant prices.

This argument is not as important as allowing time to tell.... We're just few months away from October 1.

You will think igbos are the one who swore osinbajo

You will think igbos are the one who invades Kwara

You will think Igbos are the ones that invaded Ile

Few days ago, Arewa youth called them

Not everybody is Yoruba on Nairaland or any other place mind you. I am that abokee, your perceived enemy whom you passionately hates and still wants everyone to hate him.

Meanwhile, responding to your frustrated sentences up there, I guess the Yorubas know their onions that's why they are still relevant in the Nigerian political sphere.....

An ethnic group that doesn't know its right from left keeps wailing and crying foul all the times hence its irrelevance in the running of the affirs of the country.

Yeah the world sympathized with them at that time, because the northern Arabs dominated them and they were blamed for every misadventure (mostly rightly so).
It was assumed when they break off from the Muslim-Arab north being more closely related as mostly Christians they'd be able to forge a unity ahead.
Alas! It is their leaders that made the country erupt, nd the poor civilians are suffering for it.
Sadly also the world doesn't seem to care.

Even during the struggle for independence from Sudan between 1955 and 2005,there were reports of infighting within the ranks of the SPLM/A (Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement/Army). These guys never really gotten along for once, they only came together to take on a common enemy-Khartoum-and now that the enemy is "vanquished",they must turn on each other to settle old scores that go way back in time. For instance, this same Riek Machar,at some point, was accused of attempting to assassinate Salva Kiir's predecessor,John Garang Mabior during the war against Sudan. So,what does that tell you? The toxic competition between the 60 odd tribes(Especially the Nuers and the Dinkas) and the multitudes of generals(almost 100 ) are not helping too. Add crude oil to the mix. It is a highly combustible blend I tell you. It ain't enough to say 'we are all christians'. What is the REAL unifying factor?

they are purely Hausa's in all behaviour. Maybe Christians like southern Kaduna and others but they are purely of Muslims behaviour of violence.

Biafra is not of that. Don't care about Biafra. Care for how Nigeria will be cos it will be very hot in Nigeria with many wars also with bokoharam and shia, shitee, Fulani and so on. Cry for ur soul first
