Chapter Six - The Syndicate
-------- -------- -------- --------

The two agents ran desperately; but Talia was finding it difficult with her stilettos on. So she pulled it off, dumping it in a nearby dumpster, while Somto ripped her dress around the knee to give her enough room for movement. They knew the men would soon be on their tail, so they ran until they came to the first block after the alley and Talia dashed into the middle of the road, facing a car which was coming towards her, and she pointed her weapon at the oncoming vehicle. The driver on sighting her stepped on the brakes instantly, bringing the car to a screeching halt as Somto walked over to the driver's door also pointing his gun; and the pudgy man behind the wheels came out of the car shivering in fright.

"Just take the car, but please spare my life", he pleaded. And Somto shoved him out of the way (the man scurried across the road) as the other cars halted behind, some in the distance, on noticing the two agents hijacking the vehicle. Somto quickly opened the door for Talia and she got in. Then he stepped on the throttle and moved the car in a frantic speed.

They got to the State Opera house and stashed the car in a public parking lot, making the rest of the journey on foot. It was close to midnight when they arrived the Safe House through a different route to ensure they weren't being followed. When they got to the house, Saul carried out all necessary security checks before he let them in. And was astonished to see Talia bare footed with her dress ripped at the knee. He gasped in excitement as the two agents walked passed him into the house.

"Whooo!", he exclaimed. "I can guess you both had enough action at the casino".

"You can say that again", rasped Talia sagging into the sofa, while Somto took a seat on the arm rest. The duo looked worn out as they both sat silent for few seconds. Then Saul came to sit beside Talia who was massaging her aching temples.

"So tell me", he said. "any discoveries....I mean did you extract any info from the Günther guy?"

"Yes we did", growled Somto (and Saul's eyes brightened with enthusiasm), "But it's a dead end. It leads to no where", Somto heaved.

"I don't understand", said Saul looking from Somto to Talia.

"We got Günther spewing words", stated Talia. "And he said their orders had come from a certain Yuri whom they have never met".

"Then how did they get the orders if they've never met this Yuri?" asked Saul

"It was a proxy order through another man called Pater Noster", added Somto. "And that's where the problem lies", he grinned. "Who answers such name? Only if we can get to this Pater Noster....only if Günther had given us his location, we could also reach the so called Yuri. That will definitely get us close to the Capsules and even uncover Duncan's secret deals with these men, because i'm sure he's a part of it!" he snapped.

"But we have no evidence to nail Duncan", Talia reminded.

"We just have to get one", Somto scowled. "And a tangible one".

"But how sure are we he's a part of it?" Saul queried.

"C'mon Saul, can't you see the signs?" said Somto. "Duncan refuses to share intel concerning all he had uncovered concerning the murder of the Swede president and the missing Krypto Capsules. He was also aware of the location of the facility. And these events happened while he's a senior agent in counter intelligence. Despite being in counter intelligence, all these slipped passed him". And Somto got up, exasperated. "It only takes an insider for such things to happen".

They stayed silent for a whille. In those tensed moments all they could hear were their breaths and the honking of cars in the suburban distance. Somto felt despondent by the fact they had lost the chance of getting Pater Noster's location (from Günther) and he knew those weren't the man's real names. Then Saul got up to retire to bed. Bidding them goodnight, he took the couch at the end of the room and lay down quietly.

Of all nights, there was none as cumbersome as that particular night for Somto while he lay still with his mind pondering. Deep in the subconsciousness of his sleep, he found it hard to find his inner peace as he stirred from one side of his make shift bed to the other. The reoccurring snores from Saul was already pissing him off while his mind worked on how to find the strange Pater Noster. At first it came like a dream, then like an inspiration, and then he jerked awake precipitously, his inner eyes focused on his innate thoughts. It was gradually occurring to him. The name Pater Noster.....Pater meant father and that meant who ever Pater Noster was, he was like a father to the mob. But this time it may not just be a father but a Reverend Father. A Catholic priest. And his mind drifted to a possibility. There was the certainty the name Pater Noster was an anagram. An anagram for a familiar name Tarep Estron.....Rev. Father Tarep Estron. Then Somto began to recall. Father Tarep Estron was a part of the team of scientists that had initially handled Project Erebus before it left the Research and Development stage. Could there be a possibility he was involved with the mob after having knowledge of the Krypto Capsules? Without wasting time, Somto got out of bed and in that swift motion, startled Talia from sleep, who grabbed her weapon instinctively.

"Are you okay?" she asked. "Did you hear a sound?"

Saul stirred awake, slurping sleepily. "Hey guys catch some sleep", he mumbled. And Somto said: "I think i deciphered it", he stated. "It's an anagram".

"What's that?" asked Talia looking quite sleepy too. She was too drowsy to think.

"Pater Noster is an anagram", Somto revealed. "An anagram for Tarep Estron....a catholic priest".

That was when Talia and Saul sat up in alert staring at each other. They were dazed by what the Nigerian agent had just said.

"Let's check it out on your database Saul", suggested Somto, dashing off to the control room. He was followed instantly by Talia and Saul who came forward to take his usual place before the large control monitor, then he adjusted his glasses in a nerdy fashion. With a tap of his finger on the keyboard, the monitor came on with a glow as an automated female voice asked (in euphony) for the computer access codes. Quickly he punched in the codes and a sequence of computer activities systematically appeared on the screen. Saul typed in the name 'Tarep Estron' on his spyware databank and a series of Tarep Estrons appeared. But one caught Somto's attention and he instructed Saul to click on it. Instantly, there was a chirping computerized sound, and a facial identification of a familiar old man appeared on the screen alongside his profile. Just as Somto had said, the old man's name was Reverend Father Tarep Estron.

Father Tarep Estron was a Turkish born Catholic priest residing in Vienna. And was a professor of Molecular biochemistry who taught molecular cell biology at The University of Vienna. He actually developed the general theory for the Krypto Virus and was hired by the Alliance of Nations to assist their scientists in the research and development of the biochemical weapon, before he retired to his pastoral and tutorial duties. Staring at the glaring info on the large monitor, Talia gaped in disbelief at the recent discovery.

"This is definitely Pater Noster", she gasped.

"We have to get to him as soon as possible", Somto suggested. "He could be aiding the so called Yuri with the knowledge for creating more of the weapon"

"This is bigger than we thought", Talia rasped. "For all we know there could be hundreds of those biochemical weapon in various arsenals as we speak", she muttered. "That meant Yuri had a hand in the breach at the facility, and Father Tarep had been working for him all along".

"And he's working with Cristo and Duncan from all indications", added Somto. "This can only mean one thing. Yuri is a Russian; and in the midst of the global unrest, he could've armed the Russians with the biochemical weapon to attack the West".

"I have to inform Tel Aviv immediately to liaise with Washington to back down on confronting the Russians over the DMZ", stated Talia. "We can't risk a full blown biochemical warfare with the Krypto Virus.". And she excused herself and left them as she went to contact Tel Aviv on the secure line. Then Somto told Saul to find out Father Tarep's address. In a matter of seconds, the details appeared on the screen: Patriarchen Halbmond 14/1 - Königin der Patriarchen Gemeinde (which meant: Queen of Patriarchs Parish, No.14 Patriarchs Crescent). And Somto patted Saul on the shoulder in appreciation.

"Nice job, Saul", he said with a smile of accomplishment on his face. "That's our destination".

Somto and Talia set off that morning, heading for the parish on their way to meet Father Tarep. At last the moment of truth was near, when they would get to uncover so many myteries behind the veil. It wasn't going to be a difficult task to break the clergyman. And they were ready to apply all necessary measures, even a doze of the truth serum, Amobarbital. Afterall he was an enemy of the Alliance for aiding and abetting an enemy of the Alliance of Nations. When they finally got to Patriarchs Crescent, they drove through the lane and halted a block before the ancient grotesque church. Then they got out of the car and walked towards the building.

Stepping into the gold ardoned church reminded Somto of his days as an Altar Server in the catholic church back in his home town in Imo State, Nigeria. The church was quite void of human presence except for two persons who sat within. There were angelic drawings on the high roof of the church building and statues of all sorts and sizes standing by the corners in accordance with each other. Walking in front of Talia, Somto leaned on the pew to make the sign of the cross before walking on.

"Never knew you were so religious", said Talia in a half whisper, recognizing the sanctity of the place.

They walked passed an old woman who had the rosary in her hands, muttering her prayers ostentatiously. She turned to stare at the two agents walk by and eyed them suspiciously while her lips kept moving in petition. Somto and Talia walked up to a young man seated on one of the pews and Talia leaned forward and asked: "Please how do we find Father Tarep?". The young man took a good look at her and Somto, noticing their unconventional attitude and shook his head without uttering a word, while the old woman kept observing the duo from afar. Then the young man muttered something in a strange language which the duo deduced to be Spanish, as they heard the word 'Policias' which meant 'Police'. Discreetly, Talia slipped out her pistol and nudged it at the lad's side causing him to jerk.

"Somos peores que la policía", Talia muttered in fluent Spanish (which meant "We're worse than the police). "Por lo que sólo nos llevan a padre Tarep" ("So just lead us to Father Tarep).

The young man shivered in fright as instant beads of sweat began to trickle down his forehead. Gently, he stood up and maintained his composure just as Talia had advised him and the old woman watched from afar, trying to know what was going on. Smartly, Somto stood behind Talia and the young man, covering the old lady's view while they walked from the rows of pews towards the corridor leading to a staircase as the young man lead the way.

On reaching the end of the corridor, they met a Japanese priest coming down the stairs in the opposite direction and Talia concealed the muzzle of her gun (which was still nudged at the lad) with her scarf and smiled at the priest who nodded gracefully at them (not noticing anything) before walking passed them. There appeared to be a slight bulge under the priest's black soutane as Somto noticed while the priest walked on. They climbed the stairs and came up to the floor containing Father Tarep's office, passing by other locked offices lining the corridor when suddenly, a nun screamed hysterically, running out of one of the offices infront and she ran towards them as Somto caught her in his arms. While Talia held on to the lad to prevent him from escaping in that brief distraction.

"What's wrong?" Somto demanded of the nun.

"Pa...pa...padre...padre...", the nun mumbled in pure shock, pointing ahead, towards the office she had ran out from.

Somto could see fear and shock registered all over her. And in that instant, he scurried ahead, followed by Talia and the lad as they ran into the office to behold a gruesome sight. An old gray-haired priest sat, humped with his face down, over his desk in a pool of his own blood. And Somto's eyes fell on the name plate on the desk which read: 'Rev. Fr. Tarep Estron'.

For a moment Somto stood petrified, before he walked forward, towards the lifeless body and lifted the priest's head to notice a bullet had been put in his forehead, between his eyes, at pin point accuracy thereby severing his brain stem. It was a single shot that had taken out the old priest. Whoever took the shot was an expert and had aimed at killing him right on the spot. Talia couldn't believe her eyes as she stepped backwards in awe, while the lad now came to hold the lifeless body of the priest sobbing, "Padre! Padre!" And Somto turned to stare at Talia in bewilderment. Their only source of unravelling the mysteries had just been taken out. And he knew this was definitely another dead end. But who could have killed the priest? he wondered. And for what reason? Just then his mind flashed back on the Japanese priest they had met earlier while approaching the staircase. There was something queer about him and there was a strange bulge below his vestment. That was when it dawned on Somto that the bulge was likely a gun, and a silenced one in that aspect, owing to the fact they hadn't heard any gunshot. The Japanese priest wasn't a priest afterall but an assassin. In a swift motion, Somto dashed out of the office running down the stairs in a bid to find the assassin.

Somto was now trotting between the pews in the church, grasping his gun downwards and noticing that the old woman was gone as he roamed his eyes in search of the assassin. On reaching outside the church door, he looked both ways down the road but couldn't find any trace of him. There was the certainty he could be hiding somewhere and watching. And could even take a surprise shot at Somto while he stood unguarded in broad day light. Then Somto stepped backwards into the church. And from the corner of his eyes he suddenly caught a hint of a movement sneaking behind him and he turned sharply to see the old woman (with a scathing look on her face) bringing out something from her bag. With quick reflex, he pointed his gun and fired at her, hitting her on the shoulder as she fell backwards with her cell phone which she had brought out, falling off her grasp. The sight of the cell phone on the floor told Somto he had made a mistake by firing at the naive old woman. Probably she was trying to call the cops on noticing the gun in his hand. In the dysphoria of the recent events he had thought she was bringing out a firearm from her bag. Anyone could be a suspect in such state.

The old woman was gasping for life and bleeding out profusely and Somto applied pressure on her wound as he lifted his eyes to see Talia rushing towards him. She arrived the scene and quickly and used her scarf to gauze the blood leaking out of the woman's artery.

"It was an error", Somto explained. "I thought she was armed".

"Call the cops!" she said to Somto. "They need to come with an ambulance". And Somto picked up the woman's phone and dialled the required number. He requested for an ambulance and an immediate attention before ending the call.

"We have to leave now", he said.

"I have to control the bleeding", replied Talia.

"She'll be fine", stated Somto. "The cops are already on their way. Let's move!"

Taking one last look at the bleeding woman, Somto and Talia hastened out of the church and headed to their car, before zooming off as they heard the sound of the wailing siren arriving the scene behind.

The huge silhouette of a man on a bowler hat stood at the balcony of a penthouse's suite in the middle of the city of Taipei. The man puffed out smoke while he puffed on his Cuban cigar , watching the evening skyline from the height of the tall building as the headlights of cars twinkled in the great distance. He stood in a poise which depicted accomplishment; and his persona exuded leadership and strictness. The penthouse was the latest of his acquisitions from his shady deals. He also owned the tall magnificent structure on which the penthouse stood. To him money was a necessity which opened all doors and he wouldn't mind taking lives to see his ambitions come to fruition. He was a god in his world. A world he had single-handedly built for himself. And all men, around him, feared and worshipped him. Puffing more balls of smoke into the air, he smiled wryly to himself adjusting the bowler hat on his head. It felt so good to be super rich, he thought. He was still enjoying the strong evening breeze caressing his face when an Asian man on suit, walked across the dark and oversized room of his suite to meet him at the balcony.

"The deed has been done Mr. Yuri", the Asian man said to him. And he nodded slowly in satisfaction without turning to look at the Asian man behind him.

"Hope you left no traces?" he asked.

"No sir, not at all", answered the Asian man. "I also have some pictures here which may interest you". And he handed over a large brown envelope to his boss. His boss opened the envelope, observed the pictures and smiled.

"This will go a long way, Kasumi", he said to the Asian man. "Just lay low for now. I'll call you when I need the services of your Yakuza".

Bowing in tradiional Japanese obeisance, the Asian man excused himself and left. And the huge boss laughed aloud as his voice was the only sound that was heard in that awful moment.

**************

After leaving the gunshot scene at the church, Somto and Talia made a quick stop over at a café. They got in and took their seats by a corner and Somto placed their order. While they awaited the waitress, they sat in silence as each person's mind hovered on the recent incidents of that day. Then Talia looked at Somto intently to his notice, and he asked: "What is it?". Talia heaved deeply and rummaged the side pocket of her jacket, bringing out a white paper which had something scribbled on it. She slipped the paper to Somto who was sitted opposite her and he scrutinized it for a while before picking it up.

"I found it in Father Tarep's office", Talia explained. "And i think it's meant for you".

Somto took a good look at the paper which read thus: "HI AGENT SOMTO, I KNEW YOU COERCED GÜNTHER INTO TALKING. AND I ALSO KNEW IT WON'T TAKE LONG BEFORE YOU DECIPHERED THE TRUE IDENTITY OF PATER NOSTER. SO I HAD TO TAKE HIM OUT OF THE WAY TO PROTECT MY OWN IDENTITY, SINCE I KNOW PATER NOSTER WON'T BE ABLE TO STAND THE STRENGTH OF YOUR COERCION. SORRY YOU LOST THE GAME ONCE MORE. I GOT TO HIM BEFORE YOU. JUST LIKE A GAME OF CHESS, YOU START ALL OVER AGAIN....FROM YURI

Somto squeezed the paper with disgust and tossed it into a wastebasket closeby. Then the waitress approached their table dropping the cups of black coffee as Talia placed some Euro bills on the table for the waitress to collect. Taking a sip out of the black drink, she said: "This Yuri of a man has got all it takes to give us a good fight".

"That Asian assassin works for him" said Somto, sipping his coffee gently. "Could probably be from the Japanese Yakuza. Yuri seems to have a lot of shitty cartels and gangs on his side. Can't believe he had to kill a trusted partner just to hide his identity".

"And who does such?" asked Talia.

".....a despicable man", replied Somto gritting his teeth as Talia shook her head.

"This is all a game to him", she muttered. "I can tell he's enjoying every bit of it....as we just keep running round in circles", she said. "So tell me...what next?"

"I honestly don't know, Talia", Somto responded vaguely. "We just have to be patient for now till something comes up".

"But we're running out of time. By now Cristo knows we're alive and that will give him an edge over us. The more time we waste, the more the Krypto capsules elude us and the nearer the world comes to the brink of a world war", stated Talia. And Somto replied in a voice which was more of a growl.

"Patience Talia. So says my instincts. They have never failed me before".

A couple of days passed and there was yet no lead towards Cristo and the Capsules or even Yuri. It was a like a dead end for the agents, as Saul kept digging into the Fed's archives for intel while the agents kept their fingers crossed. All hope was about being lost until the afternoon of the fourth day when Saul got an incoming call on the cloned phone. It was a call for Duncan with an anonymous number. Saul was startled and he called on his two friends.

"Guys...guys...I think Duncan has got a call", he stuttered. "It's from an anonymous caller".

He dare not answer the cloned phone first so as not to let Duncan know someone was tapping his call. So they had to wait for a while as the phone kept ringing till they noticed Duncan pick up his phone as the cloned phone went into speaker mode automatically.

"Hello", Duncan's voice said.

"Salam alaikum", came a strange voice from the other end. "Been a while now".

"Yes it's been", replied Duncan coldly.

"You don't seem too happy to hear my voice", croaked the strange voice. "Anyway, we have a job for you".

There was a sudden brief pause between the callers and in that moment, Saul began to log onto the Global Position of the two callers. Instantly two GPS icons appeared on the screen. Then Duncan sighed deeply and replied. "What's the job, Kazim?"

"We just made contact with the Al Ghazi rebel group in Somalia and they're ready to work with us. Other rebel groups in Africa are now being contacted", the voice said. "The West has to burn down".

"That means your boss, Ludvig, has finally got the biochemical weapons", Duncan squeaked enthusiastically.

"No, Mr. CIA guy", replied the voice. "and that's where you come in".

Duncan cleared his throat and asked, "So what's my part?"

"You're our sales rep dude. So you're to negotiate with Frank Cristo to give us the weapons at a cheaper rate", the voice sputtered. "He wouldn't agree on our own price. He's too greedy for my liking".

"So when am I meeting him?" asked Duncan.

The voice snorted disgustingly and then replied: "You'll be meeting with him in Wiesbaden, Germany, the day after tomorrow". There was a pause and the voice continued. "We got your flight already booked. And you'll be getting your air ticket from the usual source. I'll also be waiting for you at Wiesbaden airport"

"Alright then, so be it", replied Duncan. "See you on the day after tomorrow".

"Day after tomorrow then", the voice said and the line went dead.

Saul turned back to look at the two agents who stared back at him with wide eyes. Then Somto said to Saul: "Did you get their positions?"

"Yeah, i did, right from the beginning of the call", replied Saul. "Duncan is in Washington, while Kazim is presently at Wiesbaden". Then Saul clicked on the GPS icon indicating Kazim's position and his picture and profile emerged on the screen.

"That's Kazim Abdela, Swedish born muslim, and subordinate only to Filip Ludvig, leader of the NNM", Talia reported.

"Seems like a great guy", said Somto sacarstically. "No wonder Duncan is so ready to betray his nation just to dine with him...Bloody mole!".

Then Saul spun his chair round to face them. "So where do we go from here?" he demanded.

"At least we're sure Duncan is a mole, and there's gonna be a syndicate meeting", replied Somto. "Wiesbaden should be our next location".
