Because in my opinion, they're not doing what they're paid to.
For an intelligence gathering agency, I've never met a DULLER bunch of clowns. An example of their abject failure is the recent Jos crisis- How can people amass petrol bombs and other weapons, including military fatigues for weeks before unleashing hell on their neighbors without the SSS preempting it??

They should just be grouped with Plain clothes policemen, they are good at escorting VIPs vehicles so they probably should stick to it.

By the way, whose job was it to keep tabs on Mutallab- The SSS or NIA? Either way they both suck.

Thot i was the only one who thinks they should be scrapped. Thier only speciality is in brutalising innocent citizens.
In 2008, when militantcy & kidnapping was at its peak in Port Harcourt, militants had the audacity to go to Lulu-Brings house and its took them almost 4hrs (12:30am - 4:30am)before they got through the thick layer of concrete reinforcement  with Bombs and dynamites and finally suceeded in kidnaping the wife. Lulu-Briggs house shares a common fence with the SSS state director who was very much at home when the incidence was occuring. The SSS state office is also very close by.
The incidence not only showed how useless the SSS was but how powerless and fearful they acually are. Later in the day innocent by passers were either arrested or molested by the Fools as though they were responsible for the kidnapping.

Bring back Ribadu to come and head SSS

The SSS are not perfect we all know,but they are good.They detected the BOKO HARAM crisis right on time,sent an intelligence report to the govenor and the presidency but what did nigerians politician do-ignore the SSS and see what happened i think they should be commended for this and they are good at protectting the president

You are right. Let a better hand handle the affairs. Orientation should also be given. Moreover their job should be at the background and not public end.

@xterra- hate to burst ur bubble but the sss didn't detect boko haram,at least not before haram was dull enough to attack police formations with pitchforks. You want to know de best intel agency? No contest-Mossad. Even Mi6 beats de hell out of ur CIA benchmark. Intel gathering ain't easy but it should be what it is- Intelligent. What's sooo intelligent about escorting the president? Btw,with de SOP they adhere to daily, our president is still a sitting duck ANYDAY-sniper's delight. Their portfolio ain't streamlined; do they guard de president? Are they in charge of internal threats? How about threats from abroad? I've seen an ss agent that parted wit his weapon-to go and eat food! Worst part,de thing was tucked into his waistband,not even a holster. The best part is their recruitment. One would think they'd pick the top of the class each time, i mean this is intelligence we're talking about! Sadly some dumb brutes show up wit notes and are recruited as cadets and you wonder why they act before they think.

They should be a much more focused SSS, focused on internal only and leave the external for military intelligence. They should integrate a vast forensic network and employ intelligent computer students to ward off cyber attacks; atleast to a minimum. They should document facts and be banned from the business of doing body guards even off duty. They are many configurations they can imploy and are not so expensive because it is not that extensive. The military intelligence should focus on external only affairs especially in africa while the SSS focuses on internal affairs. The CIDs should be integrated to the SSS. That way databases are more meaningful. Nigeria does not need too many security agencies. The sss needs to be able to collect intelligence to prevent military coups in conjuction with the military intelligence. They should be allowed to have lots of benefits as much as could be employed during their duties, it should only be for graduates. The EFCC should be under the sss but just a financial branch.
    The reason they don't sense riots and other heinous crimes are because they are busy eating money here and there and bullying here and there. No sense of patriotism and initiative. The infrastructural foundation is not present thanks to the govt. But they should be a unit under which others serve ie sss, -the efcc, police, immigration, traffic, etc; the efcc sees all financial transaction and investigations - somebody should have an idea of what happened here. The CIDs takes on local issues jurisdictions. and many more. In general they could hire more than 1million people at least 2million people at any given time excluding police, army, etc.  Currently, there's no efficient clearly organised ways of protocols. Their current protocols are much threatening.  All the governors and senators don't need more than 2 sss members to update the governors on allowed  information. They should also be changed continually to avoid attachments and also have extra measures on  keeping tabs on all govenors and other officals. 
       
        It will take a while but am hopeful that the security agencies can become more useful and  dedicated sons and daughters of the soil in a respectful and respected manner.
