The problem started when D4 light on the dash board starts flashing especially anytime the 2nd gear engages. At first i will stop switch engine off and restart which will solve the problem for some days. The problem is now too frequent that i drive always with the D4 flashing whether the gear is in reverse. The real problem is, the car is now terribly slow on the second gear. It accelerates normal on the 1st gear but will be sluggish on the 2nd and resume proper acceleration on the 3rd.
Am totally confused on a way out. Its a Honda 97(Bulldog) i need advice

I checked the gear oil which is guaged. I noticed some thing more, before D4 will start flashing it will change gear from low-high-low like gear 2-3-2 in a second then the lights will start flashing.

Hey, I'm also experiencing this. But mine flashes 'N' (Neutral) anytime I shift to any Drive or the reverse gear. cry
My mechanic says it's an electrical fault in the gear box; can anyone confirm this, please?
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by elms: 4:53pm On Mar 02, 2010
You can call kunle (automedics crew) on 08038292296.
He will be of great help or listen to Automedics program 8.30 am -9 am Mon-Fri on 102.3 and call in or send a text to them. They'd likely fix your problems. But my advise is that since it is a '97 model bulldog, it is an OBD generation II diagnostics system which means you can get it scanned to diagnose the transmission problems. But note that not all scanners diagnose transmission problems some are just for your engine while others are for the whole power train (transmission codes inclusive). It will pinpoint the exact problem and you will be able to deal with the root cause.
I hope i av been of little help.

Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by Onwan: 8:06pm On Mar 08, 2010
@Poster
The LED system is purely a wiring thing with the sensors showing you (on the dash or gear side) the current gear engaged. On the other hand, the effectiveness of the transmission system itself is the gear's function.

For the lights - Just have your rewire check the sensors (I'm afraid for some models, they will need to drop the gear itself to get to those.)

For the movement - You should start by changing the ATF (drain and fill) then test, IF the bad transmission (movement) continues, then you can let the house know, and any other changes too (like smoking, misfires etc)

You need to have the few checks and tests done before we are sure its time for a new gear system.
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by awolols(m): 9:11am On Mar 10, 2010
this same thing has happened to me before, exact thing. just take it to a very good auto gear man to check the sensors, he`d only have to fix a wire well to connect, one if the wires must have removed. it could be done free for you tho. takia
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by Nicholdave(m): 9:24am On Mar 10, 2010
@ Awolols: is it equally a simple matter when it affects the car's perfomance? I mean, does the electrical fault impact the mechanical function of the gear? Because, like I posted earlier, my car fails to move at optimum speed when the indicatior flashes 'N'.
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by awolols(m): 10:04am On Mar 10, 2010
what i read from ur first post was that D4 keeps blinking. that was exactly what happened to me, exactly what you described, sluggish gear 2,etc. i`ve never heard of flashing N tho, but just do as i said, i av experienced that so just do as i suggested, its not a big work so dont let them deceive you. ok if you are in lagos, close to agege, there is a Nigerian Air Force mechanic workshop at agege road, ask of Coporal Jubril Or Corporal Ahmed. Tell them you are from Flying Officer Awolola, thats me, and tell them to take you to the gear box specialist there, he did it for me, he can help, if you are impressed, you know what to do, takia

GEAR ISSUES WITH MY MITSUBISHI SIGMA
any auto expert in the hse should pls help me out here.i got the said car last december and upon test driving,i noticed that when ever i engage the gear into reverse or drive,there is this violent force that rocks the car in the direction that the gear has been put.the mech says its the gearbox that need to be changed.i also noticed that there isnt a sensor attached where one is supposed to be;yet the car moves.its movement when placed in drive is very slow so much so that i have to rev high b4 the car moves.but when it does move,a little tapping on the gas pedal,is noticed in the movement of the car which i have driven as high as 140km/h yet i dont get to notice when the gear changes either from the rev reader on the dash board or its movement.less i forget,the car consumes alot of fuel.
i had the mech removed the gearbox,took it to Onitsha and bought the exact type thinking that my worries is over;alas,the probless still persist.the mech says its electrical.i took it to a specialist who says his computer says i bought a wrong type of gearbox even after testing the car with at least 5 different gear sensors.now,the car only moves in the reverse position.both D,D1 and D2 are not working when u engage.
pls what options do i have?grateful for any suggestions
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by elms: 4:54pm On Mar 10, 2010
@tedanne:
You might have a problem called readaptation, for some models of cars, once you change anything on the power train or even remove a socket on your injection system, you have to readapt the system (passat exibits this problem alot), Readaptation can only be done by a professional scanning machine not a hand held scanner. I hope you still have your old gearbox cos you might have to resort back to it. It is is a model from 97 and above, your only bet is to get it scanned with someone that has an OBDII professional scanning machine that will scan the whole powertrain, It will bring up some codes, and some text will follow the codes, once you have these codes you can either call Kunle or Ben on these numbers 08038292296 or 08057777961 respectively. This is their turf. Mechanics and rewires will just be tossing your around, believe you me i have been there before and i feel what you are going through but it these is not well rectified i.e taking these stated steps, this is just the beginning of your nightmares. DON'T LET ANY AUTO ELECTRICIAN TURN YOUR CAR TO SCRAP,THEY ARE VERY GOOD AT THAT. (Let's change the brain-box etc) get your can scanned to start with. then call kunle or ben and they'd tell you or your mechanic, the next step to take. Half a word is enough for the wise.
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by tedanne: 10:07am On Mar 11, 2010
thanks elms.i am of the habit(call it bad) of doing away with any major car part i haveto replace whole.i sold the old gearbox to the Onitsha people.i noticed that the gear sensor which has the pin heads like those you plug into the rainbox,didnt come with the car when after i had bought it and the seller had been drivng the car like that.
i am seriously thinking of changing the whole auto gear to a manual cos my fear is that if i get another gearbox,after a while,this same thing might come up and its bax to a reapted exercise.i was even told that certain car engine selects the type of auto gear it works with.
pls is there any envisage problem if i change the whole auto gear to manual cos i have seen a manual of the type of my car.mine i thinks s a 1991/92 model.
thanks as i await any useful input from specialist in the house
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by Onwan: 12:34pm On Mar 11, 2010
@Tedanne
I suggest you look at my earlier post up in the thread.

The sensors that reflect the gear status are simply electrical, the movement is a hardware issue with the gear system itself.

The only thing is that for some models; to reach the tray of sensors, you will need to drop the gear and also when replacing a gear system, a lot of mechanics disregard the electronics and just install the gear system.

I will suggest you come to Lagos, go to Ladipo or Owode Onirin and buy the gear system PLUS all the wiring. You will be spending too much having mechanics run you round.
Re: Help! My Car's Auto Gear Is Misbehaving by tedanne: 5:19pm On Mar 11, 2010
thnks again Onwan.the issue now is not my coming to lagos,the car cant even move when in D;only when in reverse.right now,i have made up my mind to convert to a manual gear so as not to have such issues again.God bless you for al ur advice wink

Mine is Honda accord 2003, when i engage the gear when stationary,(R or D), the car seems to jump forcefully.This happens after driving for a while.The mech told me it's because i had sludge in my engine and dirt is blocking the camshaft sensor. I dont seem to believe him.is the engine function in anyway related to the gear function?Please i need help. He also said i shld change the gear oil to AP visco 2000,is it compatible with honda?

honda got it wrong with their gear box design from the world go, if anyone has had more experience with gear box issues on honda, c'est moi.

i've changed my gear box once and worked on the changed one once as well,

flashing d light is something no honda driver wants to see on his dash, there are a whole number of reasons why this is happening,

i spent a fortune going to do diagnostics and still ended up dropping the gear box, but i will advice u not to as all it can detect is bad switches, and thats something ur mechanic can check without paying a fortune for it

if its still changing gear, chances are the gearbox can still be salvaged, go to a good gearbox expert and have them rekit the gearbox for you, if u were in abj i would have given the number of my gearbox mechanic,

he did a rekit on my 2005eod V6 since october last year and she has been running smoothly ever since
