Salaries: Lawmakers Are Unarmed Robbers – Obasanjo by ijustdey: 9:35pm On Aug 17, 2017

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Thursday in Ibadan described members of the National Assembly as a “bunch of unarmed robbers”, over their huge salaries and allowances.

Obasanjo, who hit hard at the National lawmakers, said the current legislators are one of the highest paid lawmakers in the world, despite the fact that  an estimated 75 percent of Nigerians populace live in poverty.

He added that the arm of government should be roundly condemned.

The former president spoke at the book presentation of Prof. Mark Nwagwu entitled: “I am Kagara, I Weave the Sands of Sahara”.

The event, which held at the University of Ibadan, had Obasanjo as the Chief Host while the former Minister of Education, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili chaired the occasion.

Stressing that he is expecting another round of bashing from the federal lawmakers, the former President said he would continue to lambast them for constituting a huge percentage of the nation’s overhead cost.

He lamented that the nation would hardly develop when about 90 percent of revenue was spent on overhead costs, rather than on capital expenses.

Speaking on the ongoing impasse between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the 2009 agreement, Obasanjo, said government allowed itself to be stampeded into signing agreements without full consultation within government.

However, he added that regardless of that, the government was bound to implement whatever agreement reached with workers’ unions.

He said: “Government allows itself to be stampeded into signing agreement particularly when one group or the other withdraws their service and go on strike. After the agreement has been signed, without full consultation within government, and implementation becomes an issue.

“But an agreement is an agreement whoever the agent is that signed that agreement on your behalf, you are bound by it. You may now have to renegotiate to have a new agreement but the agreement earlier signed remains an agreement.

“The universities teachers go on strike, there is an agreement; doctors go on strike, there will be a special agreement. And when the universities teachers see that the agreement reached with the doctors is different from theirs, they again go on strike and this is bad for our economy.

“The way we are going about spending all our revenue to pay overhead, we will not develop. And we will have ourselves to blame. Ninety percent of revenue is used to pay overhead, allowances, salaries and not much is left for capital development.

“In a situation like that, we have to rethink.

“It is even worse for the National Assembly. They will abuse me again but I will never stop talking about them. They are a bunch of unarmed robbers.”

“They are one of the highest paid in the world where we have 75 percent of our people living in abject poverty. They will abuse me tomorrow and if they don’t, maybe they are sleeping. The behaviour and character of the National Assembly should be condemned and roundly condemned.”

In her remarks at the occasion, the Chairperson of the event, Dr. Ezekwesili, remarked that the 289-page book, was a tool for Nigeria to examine the extent to which she had lost her values and culture.

She decried the loss of community spirit, warning that Nigeria must never negotiate her values.

According to her, the world was currently such that humanity tried to figure out what happened to morality.

The book reviewer, Mr Nwachukwu Egbunike, in his remarks on the book noted the theme of feminism and how women navigate life intricacies towards achieving success in life.

Egbunike also lauded the author’s ability to weave around different concepts in both the spirit and natural world.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, University of Ibadan, Professor Olanike Adeyemo remarked that Nwagwu’s book was a veritable instrument to help the younger generation keep touch with culture.

The event was attended by both academic and non-academic staff of the university who were on hand to celebrate the author and his wife, Helen

OBJ is a bloody hypocrite.

He should be publicly and nakedly flogged for such statement. On a Logicality stand,Wages allocated for our Legislators is too much..especially for a Country that most of its citizens live below the Poverty ratio.

OBJ is a greedy man whose over ambitiousness triggered him into devicing all political means at monetarily manoeuvering the National Assembly when he was a President. His tenure witnessed innumerable cases of Legislative bribery.

So on a moral ground...He should shut it!

shocked In as much as I hate Obasanjo cos he is not any better, u can't just dicard his message. The national assembly members are the greatest enemies of this doomed nation of Nigeria. They are the ones that ve arrested the progress of this doomed nation and mortgage its future, that is if Nigeria ever had a future. With rogues as lawmakers, such a country can never be better than Yemen or Somalia. Even Syria at war is far better than Nigeria.

When u have animalistic and questionable character making laws, you can expect that there can never be any meaningful war against corruption cos they would enact laws that would pamper rather than fight corruption. Hence with weak laws and a corrupt judiciary one can see why EFCC can never be able to prosecute a single corrupt public office holder. It is for this reason I laugh when people wrongly attack the EFCC when they have their hands tied. Recall that when Bode George stole billions he got a mere 2 years in prison. When u ve such laws, myou pamper corruption. In other words, corruption pays afterall if it takes mere 2 years in jail to make billions then it is worth it afterall no one would make such money if you're free doing legitimate business.

If the national assembly gets so much in allowances and also get constituency allowances with which they claim to execute constituency projects which they never execute, you can imagine how these rogues are bleeding the economy. With the millions they get every quarter for constituency projects they would come and build toilets, sink borehole with bold inscription of their names on d projects for which they took so much and spent so little.

If the national assembly gets money to finance projects in their constituencies, then it is logical never to blame the executive alone for the infrastructural decay in this doomed nation. Also, because they are thieves, there are no measures or some form of audit of the monies they earn and spend on the so-called constituency projects.

By the way, the national assembly never finances projects but to make laws. That is d function of the executive but now that the legislature gets constituency projects, then it is logical for the judiciary as an arm of the government to get monies for constituency projects as well.
For them, it is business and they are out to make profit. The link below says it all.
https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/senators-reps-lament-we-re-not-recouping-campaign-spending/170440.html

When the likes of Saraki who was receiving pension from Kwara state govt as ex-governor while serving as a senator could come out to say he has stopped receiving his pension due to outcries and has not deemed it fit to deliberate on this isssue with his colleagues and enact laws on this issue then u can imagine how doomed such a nation is to ve such individual as it topmost lawmaker. Or what of roadside thugs like Dino Melaye flaunting ill gotten wealth, ex governors who looted their state treasuries like TA Orji, Danjuma Goje, Bukar Ibrahim among others making laws, such a country would remain doomed.

A bicamaral legislature is too expensive that countries like Ghana and Senegal had to do away with it why cant we if not for the greed of a few and the docile masses divided by ethnicity and religion that allows such nonsense to fester.

Because these rogues have so much money to throw away that is why the likes of Saraki could employ as much as nearly 300 aides to what only God knows. Even many rich industralized nation cannot afford the size and cost of the Nigerian legislature.

If the national assembly was reduced and we have a unicamaral legislature, nothing like constituency allowances, reduced pay for lawmakers and strong laws to fight corruption perharps the death penalty as it is in China, you can imagine the monies available for capital projects which is a key driver of the economic activities, job creation and wealth distribution. But sadly the wealth is only for a few and a thief would never shoot himself in the foot by enacting strong laws against stealing. So never expect anything good from these robbers including that useless Ben Bruce with his empty common sense rants and that hypocritical Shehu Sani who can only boast of empowering his constituents with camels and radios.

Nigeria has no future, no hope and is heading indefinitely to the rocks. Even the Devil has more hope of making heaven than for this doomed nation to ever sniff progress and development. Nigeria is a disgrace to the black race. It is hopeless far beyond redemption.

Shouldn't we leave this debate so we can move on and find a solution to this anomaly that is ruining our nation?
This is one way that we can reduce costs and apply resources to develop the country and improve the lives of our people
