Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by DewDrop(f): 11:51am On Feb 27, 2007
First question, are you a consultant currently? and what is your area of specialization?

None at all didisky, but read the subject again, it does not suggest she is or isn't a consultant, it suggests she doesnt know how to start up a consulting company. wink Reading is Fundamental! No hard feelings dear.

Back to the question at hand, there is not minimun requirement to start a Consultancy businesses. Depending on your area of specialization and your contacts, you can build your company one job at a time. I would suggest you start by sourcing out companies on ground that you are interested in doing similar jobs and can talk to someone within them. Good luck with that because in Nigeria, information seems to be viewed as  someting that cannot be shared,

Well, firstly u need to be a specialist at something;this means that you must have been working at it for about 5-10years(so i heard!).Then you need to approach people who need your services, you can build your contacts by referrals.

First of All you need to have a First Degree (Bachelor's Degree), Then proceed to the Corporate Affairs Commission in your Area to get registered as a Consulting Company (should be on your area of specialization, or the area you studied in your Bachelor Degree). Setup office >>> And Start Running!
Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by LearnBook: 4:20pm On Apr 05, 2007
Sorry, you don't need a degree to be a consultant and you don't have to be a limited company either. You can start as a soletrader. However, you do need skills in an area that people will want to pay you for. Take something like IT Consulting. You can focus on small business IT consulting and master something like Microsoft Small Business Server. There appears to be very few companies in Nigeria with these skills in my opinion.

Another area you could look at is small business accounting - here a lot of companies use peachtree. But peachtree was made for the american market, does not allow the use of other currencies etc. So that's a possible opportunity as well.

Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by boladonas(m): 11:22pm On Apr 06, 2007
I have been in consulting for a while
Consultants sell their time and talent
I can safely say that you need 2 things
Intelligence : You can only consult for people you know more than on a subject. People willing to pay for your talent

Industry: You will work hard and be resourceful. Leave all the others to GOD
Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by Maleeq(m): 2:49pm On Apr 08, 2007
I dont intend to discourage but being in the consultancy field(I.T - software/ hardware) for some time I realized it pays off to atleast work for some time with an established consultancy firm in the field you intend to go into. It builds up your contacts database if you know what i mean. Unless you have real 'CONNECTIONS' , start off maybe really slow but the future is brite.

For now, just go on and atleast register your company/business name with the coporate affairs commission. You can never tell when you'll hit a big job only to be dropped for not having a registered name(It happened to me, no fun at all).

All the best!!!
Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by eko4show(m): 10:40pm On Apr 08, 2007
my submission would be the following:

1. you dont have to be super intelligent to be a consultant
2. consultancy is most about names and brands than service
3. consultants are people you pay huge money to teach you what you already know

i am speaking from 5 years experience in an IT department of a reputable bank in nigeria.

i remember we had Consultants from accenture and telnet but i wasnt particularly impressed with their solutions, when they had come and gone, we had to locally find a more cost effective solution to the compounded issue.

in effect, start small, give it 110% and in no time you will build a reputation
Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by VESTA: 4:52pm On Apr 09, 2007
Just watch before you leap. Nigerians always believe they can do it on their own even when a professional advice is needed. They hardly meet a consultant, though it's bad. So, 'look well before you leap'

Good Luck.

i insist that in Nigeria context. it's more about who you know than what you know
and it does appear to me that , companies deliberately patronise these so called consultant for two reasons

1. to keep them in job
2. to identify with their brands ( an obscure company requesting the services of PWC for instance more often than not is trying to gain some reputation on the back of an establshed brand PWC)
3. at times CEOs have a lot to gain materially from employing the services of a consultants.

i stand by these points 100% having worked for a consulting company and a bank at different times.

[center]Thank you O breeolan
@ adaobee, (who has yet to respond
while we all argue this out)
everyone here has offered good advice
Read through it all and you'll see the common trend:
Figure out what you are very good at,
Find someone who needs that expertise
Build your portfolio one job at a time!

Hiring an IT consultant is not an easy task and can present a number of challenges. Many companies often make mistakes while selecting the right people. One of the qualities that a business should look for in a good IT consultant is someone with excellent communication skills.

IT Consultant
Re: Starting Up A Consulting Company by Businesstools(m): 1:09pm On Feb 10, 2012
A consultant is someone who has a versed knowlede or experience in a particular field of human endeavour. To become a business consultant, you do not need any degree or certification. However,to register a business name as a consulting firm or establishing a consulting company, you must posses a Masters degree in a relevant discipline or a recognised professional qualification e.g ACA.
