When Nigerians were depicted as savages and cannibals in District 9, did it make the front page of Nairaland? undecided

Before you get too excited that we got free promotion (the unobtanium-seeking-general also prided himself in wars fought in Venezuela with the common denominator being mineral resources with the most valuable being Crude Oil for Nigeria), don't forget District 9 that had 90% of 227 critics giving the film a positive review irrespective of an embarrassing portrayal of Nigerians and this scene off The simpsons comics where we got verbally attacked for scam mails. Ergo, a one step forward, two steps back thing!

Nigerian citizens visiting nigeria arrange their own security when they visit naija.
Expartriates in the delta arrange security escort 24/7 in the naija delta.
Innocent citizens avoid Maiduguri,Bauchi etc due to boko lesson and incessant religious crisis.
Police kill inncocent citizens at will nationwide.
Armed robbers terrorise people all over naija.
Federal roads in naija are worst than farm roads in advanced world.
Nysc wont post corp members to Jos because people are being massacerd at will in the name of tribe and religion.
Nepa cables fall and electrocute innocent citizens in PH.
Scores of people are burnt alife in cases of pipeline explosions across the states.
People die of poverty in the midst of plenty.

Aint those enof evidence of jungle?

Lol @ the Simpsons' barb. I guess no publicity is bad publicity. So maybe, in fact, we are happy we're being mentioned/talked about at all. It makes us feel relevant. If that's our only contribution to Hollywood, then so be it grin cool.

Don't mind those movie critics. They are ready to give a wack and boring movie 99%.

U havent seen anything yet. What's good about Nigeria at the moment? So why complain about being mentioned in movies?

Tell your leadership to position the country where good references could b made about it.
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by philipinho: 4:40pm On Mar 09, 2010
You all make me laugh, where was it mentioned that Avatar, District 9 and other movies happened in real life? Not until they say so, or make a documentary about Nigeria should you be so bothered. Grow up my people.
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by 190: 4:41pm On Mar 09, 2010

What do you think will happen if the United States is disrespected in movies from other countries?
Why is it that in disaster movies (2012, Knowing, etc), the destruction usually starts from the United States?
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by larryshow4(m): 5:00pm On Mar 09, 2010
MUST YOU ARGUE OVER THAT?? ITS A LOVELY MOVIE,
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by jayjay4u: 5:14pm On Mar 09, 2010
they also did that (mentioning Nigeria in a sarcastically disparaging way) in "tears of the sun" and also in the season series "Lost"

Avatar is not jst my type of movie. Due to frens pressure i tried watching it, but found myself sleeping at the middle of it and couldnt finish it.
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by obinna5000(m): 5:21pm On Mar 09, 2010
@jayjay4u
"Tears of the Sun" was a movie based on Nigeria's civil war. So, obviously Nigeria should be mentioned. Although the movie was never shot in Nigeria and no Nigerian actor was used.

Nigeria was definitely mentioned in the movie. Everyone knows that it can become a possible war zone. It has all the right ingredients to mimic Somalia.

It was very good movie though. I seen it in 3D

The worst of it all was in district 9, where nigerians were referred to as cannibals. there was another movie where bruce willis was a mercenary trying to rescue some pple from nigeria to cameroon, and when someone mentioned God helping the pple in "nigeria" he said and i quote "god has already left Nigeria". look at the PS3 advert too.
so many others i cannot mention. i dnt blame them though. the way the country's image has been tarnished, everyone out here sees anything "nigerian" as being bad.

My friend, you,re misquoting bruce willis - he said "africa", not "Nigeria"
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by bykes(m): 6:15pm On Mar 09, 2010
in the first place is it not glamorous to mention nigeria in such a popular movie.by the way are we not war torn. look at what is happening in the presidency.look at the frequent crisis in jos.

I couldn't believe my ears when i heard the guy mention Nigeria in the cinema smiley I don tire, i no fit laugh or cry cos i can't kick anybody's backside for now so i just sat back and watched the template movie that the west normally makes

I saw a fantastic critic of the movie that does have a great deal of truth in it, i notice the whole idea in this critic in all facets of there society; how they explain stuff, tell the news, etc

Check it out here and enjoy (also thank me smiley )http://io9.com/5422666/when-will-white-people-stop-making-movies-like-avatar

This just shows how so petty the average Nigerian is embarassed embarassed angry angry angry! So what if they mentioned nigeria in the movie - it's their damn right to use whatever bloomin' name they deem fit!! why should it concern us if they use nigeria or Indonesia or Surinam? We just hang on to any mention of our name in the foreign media; as far as I'm concerned, we're just exhibiting an inferiority complex and a false sense of our own importance (and we are important, by the way!!) - as if we've done a good job of letting the world know that anything good can come from this our country. So much for re-branding our image!!! angry angry lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

And by the way, I love the movie - excellent storyline, great special effects; my analysis of the movie:

60% Sci-fi
40% fantasy
200% BLOCKBUSTER!!!

Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria
« on: Yesterday at 12:22:29 AM »

If u've not watched AVATAR the best animated movie in the market, your missing something. I was very enthusiastic to watch this movie, but somehow i felt mortified when i heard the general telling the new scientist (Jake) that "He returned from Nigeria with no scratch, but at the first day in this bush, he sustained that vast mark on his face" Now i wanna know if US is telling the whole world that "Our soldiers are fragile or Nigeria is a battle field" Why can't they mention our name in other good things than war and violence.

The late Attorney Cochran famously said to the jury, "If the gloves don't fit, you must acquit!"   Profound!
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by alias64: 6:23pm On Mar 09, 2010
It’s all to do with racism. I have stated repeatedly that while it might suit some Nigerians and Africans, for political and other miscellaneous reasons, to have Nigeria criticized, there is a fine line to tread. Nigerians who are  always cussing themselves and allowing others to do so, in the name of what we call truth, as if there is any such thing as "the truth", most always remember that we’re black people. Hollywood and the white media are always looking for the next Black bogyman. Before us Nigerians, there were the African Americans, Run away slaves, Haitian, Jamaicans, Cubans all played the part of that outwardly seething black mass of threat that provide the thrilling yet scary nightmare which the dainty white woman, in her bed, deliciously  shivers at the thought of.

On a lighter note, I suppose villainy is sexier than goody-2-shoes from a media perspective but Nigeria is far too complex a country to contract into such a small niche.
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by Mwakuk(m): 6:36pm On Mar 09, 2010
Why they did that is because it is what aptly describes the situation in Nigeria, especially in Plateau State, where the muslims have vowed that the State will know no peace, and they ensured that they killed over 500 of the innocent people while in their sleep while there was a curfew in the State. Any need to go further on why Nigeria is described in war situations? I am sure you will think of a host of other reasons.
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by obinna5000(m): 6:39pm On Mar 09, 2010
Just because Nigeria was mentioned in "Avatar" everybody is going berserk. The way it was done wasn't meant to insult Nigeria just like how "District 9" did. IMO, I don't even find the statement insulting at all.
Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by alias64: 6:43pm On Mar 09, 2010

Re: Avatar, Insult Or Exaltation To Nigeria by eddiebomba(m): 6:49pm On Mar 09, 2010
I laugh at everyone who's making a fuss of an issue so petty  cheesy cheesy tongue tongue - and at the hypocrisy you're showing cheesy cheesy cheesy!! You're all just posturing - you wouldn't give a hoot if the General in Avatar had mentioned North Korea or Congo - countries that are just as "failed" as we are. Yet at the mention of Nigeria, you're all up in arms - as if you care about this country!! sad sad It's proof that you're all just desperately trying to cover up your own neglect of this nation. As far as I'm concerned, we don't have any moral right to protest being pilloried and being put in a bad light by obviously more enlightened people! So stop the posturing!! lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Which general trend? How about the depiction of "Colombians" and "Cubans" as drug warlords and criminals in foreign movies? Will you say because of that everybody in Colombia or Cuba is a criminal or drug pusher?
