Can professionals and expert drivers in the house help lecture us on what to do in various moments of unexpected driving mishaps while driving along a high way.

What speed is ideal for inter state driving?
Should one apply brakes when a tirer burst?
During brake failure what should be done as a driver?
And more.. ..

Thank you.

Tell us where you are going it's easier

1. Carry extra fluids like brake fluid, ATF, power steering fluid and 2 extra tyre one already in the rim, the other just incase. If you buy tyre on the highway, the cost will kill you.

2. Highway speeds vary in Nigeria, you have to know the road or be far sighted to evade craters on road, there are some roads you can do 200km/h while some it's better to do 80km/h to avoid slamming into death traps.

3. Best thing as a first timer is to follow a capable saloon car, cut and suv will block your front view but a saloon car would be easy, you avoid what your Wayfinder falls into that is very easy. Find a car that isn't too slow or very fast.

4. Brake failure on Highway, I have never experienced it, the answer to this question isn't always straight forward because it only takes a few seconds to react, that reaction cannot be predetermined. Never utilize the brake pedal but
a. Slam into sand dunes along the highway
b. Make use of the culvert your car will get scratched but you will slow it down.
c. Making sure there is no vehicle coming from behind swerve from side to side minimally.
d. Remove your leg from the accelerator, switch the gear to d2 or d1 without pressing the brake to utilize engine braking for automatic
For manual just clutch down and switch gear to 2 or 1 let go of clutch and engine braking takes effect.

5. Don't pick passengers along the highway, if you feel you have taken a wrong turn, don't ask strangers in secluded locations for directions get to a bubbling place and ask, it's safer.

6. When it's necessary to stop and check the car for oil leaks and the rest please do it in a filling station not any how on the highway.

7. Drive nicely with other road users and don't overspend or race with others.

8. sleep early so you can start the journey early and at alert

Long journey....prepare your car. Check brake and steering fluids levels .... check engine oil level..change oil and filter if not recently changed.... check and change hoses if they are not in very good condition or they may give up along the way. Radiator... if you can.... refill with coolant instead of water.Check radiator cap...it should be a pressure cap. Tires... they must be in good condition and as above said...have two complete spare wheels... pot holes can destroy both tire and rim. Above all, have a tire gauge and personally verify that the tire pressure is what is recommended. Have necessary tools to change wheels, a flashlight, duct tape and extra fluids ...coolant, brake fluid, correct engine oil and a whole heap of faith. Good luck.
