Serbian second seed Jelena Jankovic outlasted unseeded American Venus Williams 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 to earn a meeting with fourth seeded Russian Dinara Safina in the WTA Charleston final.

The victory for Jankovic, ranked ninth in the world, came down to a line overrule by the chair umpire with Jankovic serving at 6-5 in the third-set tie-break.

A Jankovic backhand clipped the sideline tape but it took the chair umpire to check the clay-court mark and overrule the line judge's out call on a Jankovic appeal to end the two-hour and 31-minute match.

"I was about to die at the end," said Jankovic, whose three previous matches had lasted a total of only two hours and 18 minutes.

Safina had a much easier time for the second straight day as ninth seeded compatriot Vera Zvonareva retired with a wrist injury while trailing 6-3, 0-1. Safina also had received an easy passage on Friday when 10th seed Tatiana Golovin of France retired after one set with an ankle injury.

No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic worked quickly in the Family Circle Cup final Sunday, dispatching fourth-seeded Dinara Safina in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in Charleston, S.C.

Jankovic won a crystal cup and $196,900. It wasn't her biggest paycheck. She earned $258,462 for advancing to the semifinals of the U.S. Open last year, where she lost to Justine Henin.

"I'm so happy I won this title," Jankovic said. "I had an awesome week here, especially playing yesterday, beating Venus. Today in the final was a little bit different story because of the weather."

Safina, of Russia, got $100,000 and a crystal bowl.

Safina, the fourth seed who improved to No. 10 by making the final, got to the championship without dropping a set in the tournament.

Gisela Dulko of Argentina won her first WTA Tour title Sunday, rallying to beat Sorana Cirstea 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Gaz de France Budapest Grand Prix.

Dulko won four games in a row to start the second set. Her serve was broken in the opening game of the third set, but she rebounded by winning four straight games to establish a 4-1 lead.

"I'm really happy today because this is my first WTA title," Dulko said. "I feel really excited now and I wish to congratulate Sorana. She is a great talent and I'm sure she is going to play many more finals."

Cirstea, the first Romanian to reach a WTA final since Ruxandra Dragomir in 2000, played her eighth three-set match in the tournament after coming through qualifying.

"I'm really happy. This is just my third WTA tournament and nobody expected me to be here in the final," Cirstea said.

Unseeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 7-6 on Saturday to set up a final against world number one Justine Henin in the Warsaw Cup.

Henin withstood a strong challenge from Serbian Jelena Jankovic to win 7-5 2-6 6-4 and reach her fourth final of the year.

"I was expecting a tough match because she gave me a lot of trouble in the past," Henin told reporters. "I started the match pretty well, I was very aggressive and she made a couple of mistakes, but tactically it was pretty perfect what I was doing.

"Then I lost my intensity but finally I could finish the first set - not the way I wanted, but I won it. I didn't play well at all in the second set , and then in the third set it was a good fight," she added.

Greta Arn of Germany captured the women's title, rallying past Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Arn, ranked 176th, had won four lower-level competitions. Azarenka, ranked 68th, was playing in her first final.

Arn saved three match points in the third set before forcing the tiebreaker, where the German broke Azarenka three times.

Arn rallied after the first set and broke Azarenka twice in the second set. She broke the 18-year-old Azarenka on her third try to open the third set, then saved three break chances before breaking again to lead 3-0.

Azarenka broke twice over the next six games and was up 40-15 in the 10th game. Arn pushed the score to deuce then saved match point for the third time before the players exchanged breaks to force the tiebreaker.

Defending champion Nadia Petrova was beaten 7-6 6-4 by fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded third, while in another quarter-final 12th-seeded Serbian teenager Ana Ivanovic battled to a 7-5 3-6 6-4 victory over 15th seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

Unseeded Julia Vakulenko, who like Henin had an exhausting day having to play twice because of the backlog caused by rain, continued her dream run through the draw adding the scalp of Dinara Safina to that of Amelie Mauresmo who she beat earlier in the day.

Vakulenko beat Safina 6-3 5-7 6-3 in a gruelling match that lasted two hours 23 minutes and will play Ivanovic in the semi finals.

World number one Justine Henin was in danger of crashing out of the Berlin Open after losing the first set of her quarter final against Jelena Jankovic.

Jankovic, who lost to the Belgian in the semi finals of Warsaw last week, took the rain delayed first set 6-3 but Henin was hanging on in the second set at 4-4 when lack of light stopped play on the Steffi Graf Stadium. The match continues tomorrow.
Re: Updates On WTA Tournaments! by PDF: 2:02pm On May 12, 2007
What a comeback by Henin, the undisputed female king of clay.  Came back from four games down in the third set and took six games in a row to book a place in the semi-finals. She beat Jankovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

I doubt she'll make it past this round though, since she's been on court longer than her opponent, no thanks to the rain.  She faces Kuznetsova (a player she's beaten fourteen times in their fifteen previous meetings) in the semis. I hope she goes through anyways.

As predicted, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova edged out world number one Justin Henin 6-4 5-7 6-4 in their delayed German Open semi-final, setting up a showdown against Serb 12th seed Ana Ivanovic.

Ivanovic, 19, reached her first final on clay on Saturday when unseeded Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko withdrew from their semi-final because of a hand injury with the Serb leading 4-3.

The 19-year-old Ivanovic won her third career title, defeating a top-10 player for the eighth time. She will reach the top 10 in the new rankings Monday.
