Banning exportation of yam is wrong.

We should work on meeting international standard and increasing quantity through our local farmers in order to help some unpaid civil servants who have farms to raise money for themselves.

I am against exporting tubers of yam , we need to know what those europeans want out of the yams and process it from here for them to add value to the chain and make more money ..Besides Audu Ogbe should have made sure he he set vision for Nigeria to have a yam surplus before any export so as to avoid scarcity and hike in local supply like they did when they just raided yam markets and bought everthing for export whicch was very wrong

Nigerians should know that most states don't have taxable people & businesses and so agriculture remains one of the quickest route to increase their IGR.

Nigerians should ask those countries to supply them the yam they will like us to export to them so that we can mass produce them and sell to them.

Later, we will introduce it to the farmers in order to boost production.

The lawmaker is wrong.

What he should emphasize on are

1) Produce yams that meet international standards.

2) Grow more yams for both local & foreign consumption in order to boost our dollar inflow.

3) Process that yam into much useful products that can boost our dollar inflow.
you have to count one before going to two, we have not grown enough yams yet for local consumption you are talking about growing enough for foreign consumption

"The most embarrassment is that our people live in hunger."

I agree.

On topic: Bans on food export are a tricky issue and can backfire. They can hurt farmers and cause market uncertainty. In the former case, farmers may begin to grow other crops or simply reduce the amount of the production to household levels, which will further reduce the supply of the export banned product on the national level. As a result, the export bans policy may have the opposite effect of what it intended.

I am not an expert though and stand to be corrected.

His English was bad but he made a lot of sense. Why export when the one we have isn't enough...that would just drive up the price of the little yam remaining and greatly affect the masses.

Private business will go where they feel they can make the biggest profit.

If it means exporting then that is what they'll do.

Those Europeans want to eat them.

What Nigerian Government should do, is to ask those countries to tell them what specie they want and then mass produce them in State government farms that are in partnerships with farming businesses of those countries.

Later, the species will be given to local farmers to mass produce them for export.

As for scarcity of yam, it can easily be overcome once people know that they can generate more money for themselves through yam cultivation.

Nigerians will produce more yams if they know that they will make more money from the sale of it.

Remember that lots of people have not received their salaries and this is one means to help them out if you give them the right species.

We have enough yams cultivated in Nigeria.

The problem is, getting them out of the farms to places where they are most needed eg How many yams produced in Ebonyi gets to places like Lagos.

So in conclusion, yams are wasting in the rural areas.

The moment yam export is ban, farmers will divert to other crops and yam production will decline.

We just have to ask the British Government to tell us the particular yam they need and if possible partner with British Farming Businesses in order to use them to gain more access to British Markets.

The moment it is opened to local farmers to export through the state governments and the state governments insist that they will only buy those that meet international standard, the farmers will want to produce so much with the hope that many of their yams are bought by the state governments and exported.

The excess yams not picked by the state governments will then find itself back into the local market.

Yam sold at yam producing areas are cheaper to yam sold at non producing areas.

Example, as of 8 years ago, if you go to miango local government area of Plateau state, a bag of corn is sold for #500. That same corn was sold for #4000 in Lagos due to the inability to get the yam from Plateau to Lagos.

So we produce lots of food that don't get to the urban centers but get wasted at the rural centers.

I am totally in support of this. How can Nigeria be taking of exportation of Yam when the majority of Nigerian citizens are seriously dying of hunger. They should cancel about exportation of any kind of food not only Yam.If they export all these goods the money realized from it will be shared among them without the masses feeling any positive impact from it.

Are yam exports not opened to local farmers now? The last time I checked, GB was not their only export destination, was it?

The Federal & State governments should help farmers to buy internationally accepted yam seedlings they will produce for export so that we can capture the British market also.

The more markets we capture, the more dollars we will realize for the states and FG.

we don't need to allow buhari sell our product and make money for his pocket when we can sell and make money and feed our compatriots. People are hungry and need the yams here, we don't have excess to ship out.

You are wrong.

We should approach the countries we intend to export to and ask them the type of yam they want and if possible, collect the specie from them and mass produce them in Nigeria in order to help States increase their IGR.

The states can then be told to partner with local farmers to increase their export so that not only will they increase their IGR but some unpaid civil servants can generate money from the yams they export through their state governments.

You would rather your people can't afford food items at the expense of getting fat IGR that may not be used to the benefit of the general populace? The ripple effect of what you are proposing in inflation induced by high cost of food items which your phantom IGR may not be to assuage the effects. And why must we export in raw form even if we have to? why not push for value addition that would more than double the returns of the farmers.
