Re: Do You Think Any Nigeria Musician Can Win a Grammy? by ElRazur: 6:46pm On Mar 18, 2010
In theory, yes. Here is why it is possible in theory:
Anyone can win an award if "all things are equal". A good example will be when Tuface or so beat Akon to an award some few years ago.

It wasn't that Tuface was that good o beat Akon, but the manner or system in which the "host voting" was done. Allow me to explain, an award category is given to a radio station and then fans are urged to vote their nominations. In this case, the host radio station was in Nigeria or another country in Africa if memory serves me right. Needless to say, people nominated Tuface and as a result he won the award at the event (mtv??)

Now, the question is will Tuface have won the award if it is somewhere more neutral? Most likely not. Hence my beginning statement  of "in theory yes and when all things are equal"

As for Grammy, it will have to be a big No. Why? Well, the panels that decides the award whilst comprise of many relevant experts, however, there is yet to be a product out of the Nigeria's industry that is truly worthy of a Grammy.  All the Nigerians who have won or nominated in the past had worked on very good projects artistically and not just party mass appeal (which is what Nigeria music is mostly about) for example Seal-kiss from a rose (batman) , Sade Adu etc have all worked on projects/albums that are almost "textbook stuff". Perhaps when the music and movie industry in Nigeria  reach that level, the Grammy will be awarded? But as it stand no.

Again these are my views and opinions. Thanks.

Perhaps the question we should be asking is Which Nigerian artist - Home based - can win the Grammy.

Well, do you have any artist in mind that you think may have a chance? (Even if it is as a nominee)

KSA was probably our only chance, but I am not sure he capitalised on the idea.

1987 comeback

In 1987, Sunny Adé returned to international spotlight when Rykodisc released a live concert he did in Seattle and was given an astonishing embrace by fans across the globe who were eager for another international album release[8].[who?]

He soon employed an American manager, Andrew Frankel, negotiated another three album record deal with the Mesa record label (a Division of Paradise Group) in America. One of these albums was 1998's Odu, a collection of traditional Yoruba songs, with which he was nominated for the second Grammy Award and thus making him the first African to be nominated twice for a Grammy. Apart from being an international musician Sunny Adé is also prominent in his native Nigeria, running multiple companies in several industries, creating a non-profit organization called the King Sunny Adé Foundation, and working with the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria.

In recent times, hip-hop music appears to be holding sway with the electronic media in Nigeria with massive airplays. Nonetheless, Sunny Adé's musical output has continued to inspire a vast generation of other Nigerian musicians, who believe in the big band musical set up which Sunny Adé and late Fela Kuti are noted for[9]. The musician, Lagbaja is one of the very many musicians Sunny Adé's music has inspired. In 2008, his contributions to world music was recognised; as he was given an award for his outstanding contribution to world music at the Reggae and world music awards held at the Appollo Theater in Harlem, New York.
[edit] Hollywood career

In the 1980s Adé embarked on a career in Hollywood. His music was featured in the 1983 film Breathless, starring Richard Gere, and the 1986 comedy One More Saturday Night, and he acted in Robert Altman's 1987 comedy O.C. and Stiggs.

I'll be very obvious about this and spew out the usual, 'Asa' and the likes?

Possibly [as a nomination at best]. Now imagine other artists who are better than them world-wide and are slightly more recognised. The odds are not looking good to be honest. But then, I may be wrong.

I get peeved these days when i watch Nigezie and those idiots are all about Owo ati Swagger.
Useless, talentless artistes just trying to feel funky. Their music has no substance, no sense, no story-line.
Ever since Olu Maintain started the whole Yahooze thingy, every naija artiste wanna follow suit. . . .Rubbish!!!

9ice is super-talented. . . . .Tradition is even better than Gongo Aso album.
I dunno why loads of people are saying the album didn't deliver. . . .I like 'Respect Is Reciprocal', 'Gbamu-Gbamu' and 'Anytime'
They are stuffs of legends.

They have overcooked that concept, abeg.
Senseless boys looking like clowns in suits, drinking bubbly in the club with some ugly ladies grinning from ear to ear.
I musta seen over 150 Naija videos with the same shyte. . . . .Censors board should start clamping down on it.

Tradition beats any Naija album i have listened to in the last 3 years.
The heavy beats, the flow and 9ice's poetry are top drawer.
'Show Some Love' was like a reggae tune and yet 9ice still killed it with his amazing Yoruba proverbs!

imagine photocopy and street credibilty in Tradition!!!

No chance!!!
Re: Do You Think Any Nigeria Musician Can Win a Grammy? by Nobody: 9:43pm On Mar 18, 2010
First time i listened to the album, i got hooked on respect is reciprocal and gbamu gbamu. I got slightly tearful with anytime reminds me of Tupac's Dear Mama. That album is a home-run
Re: Do You Think Any Nigeria Musician Can Win a Grammy? by Dotman01(m): 10:48am On Mar 19, 2010
What amazes me about 9ice is that he doesnt really need the help of d so called 'big artistes' to deliver, eg street credibility nd pete-pete. Even if he didnt feature 2face nd asa it would av been even better. Wen i heard dat he was gonna do a collabo wit ASA, i tot she was gonna outshine him but 9ice murder her patapata.
IMO Tradition is beta dan Gongo Aso.

Asa, Banky W & 2face are not far from it! maybe in d next 10 years!!!

Haba. . .IF you do not like something, . .doesn't mean that ITS BAD. . .it a chioce thingy. . .

You Like 9ice's Tradition best, . .Fine. . .
In my opinion. . .Gongo Aso is still his best work. . . .it doesn't rule out the fact that i like Gbamu gbamu / respect is reciprocal et al.

Also, i believe that 2Faces 2nd album (Grace 2 Grace) was phenomenal

Asa, is ok. . .but not that big a deal. . .TO ME. . grin grin

My two cents
Re: Do You Think Any Nigeria Musician Can Win a Grammy? by Chuks84(m): 12:13pm On Mar 19, 2010
I'm suprised that a lot of people like 9ice's tradition, i thought it was total crap, i couldn't even listen to one song on it. it was an extreme let down afta coming out wit Gongo - Aso. To make matters worse, folks are saying he's capable of winning a grammy! Are u guys high To start with albums like tradition appeal to only one tribe, if you are not yoruba, you'll surely get a headache from listening to it. you should note that most grammy winners are selected based on the fact that their songs appeal to a wide range of people and its cuts across cultural, social and language barriers. The only way someone like 9ice would ever win a grammy is if a category is created for Best Yoruba Album, and that, my brothers and sistas will neva happen!
